GUEST BOOK ARCHIVE JANUARY - MARCH 2002
These are the guestbook entries for January - March 2002.
Tony, Just want to say how much I enjoy your music. My week is not complete unless I listen to you a couple of times and as I beginning guitarist it's an understatement to say you are an inspiration. At the age of 47 I probably don't have enough time left to ever become any good but on the odd evening when the blue moon rises and I play a chord correctly I feel a great sense of satisfaction. I can't make it MerleFest this year but I wish you a great show and hopefully I'll be able to enjoy your music live at one of your other performances. Best wishes for great health and even more success.

Tony, my dad took me to see you in Bristol at Virginia Intermont and I have to say that it was the best concert I've ever been to. I grew up listening to you, Ricky Scaggs and Alison Krauss. My dad has been playing the guitar since he was just a kid and has taught me over the years to play as well. I just want to say thank you for being an inspiration to my dad and I!!

Heard you first time live as Bass Hall in Ft Worth. Sorry for the sound troubles, we all have this once in a while. Enjoyed you solo in spite of it. The show was a real success overall for Bluegrass in this area.

Pamela, Thanks alot for e-mailing me, I really appreciate it. I am the one who has been (and still does daily) study Tony stuff. For four years Tony has inspired me and my own music. Evan the songs that might be simple to Tony are such a great musical education to me. I study everything from classical, blues, jazz, jerry garcia, style, and other stuff, but for some reason I always have to stuy Tony ,becuase his music is so challenging and gracefll that it is just almost spiritual and soul moving. Theres a Grateful Dead song called (Built to Last) and it makes me think of Tonys music and way of playing, If you heard it you would know what I mean. I hope to see Tony again soon, because cds are great but to see the man himself is so awesome, and, I can see Tony up close and really get a musical lesson. Thank you again for the e-mail. It made my day a great one. Joshua

Mr. Rice: I heard a rumor (hopefully more) that you had recorded two more of those instructional tapes for Homespun Music... please, please, please tell me that Shenandoah is on one of these tapes. I've got it worked out *mostly*, but there are so many nuances that can only be understood by mastering the acoustic guitar before attempting such an elegant song. After spending nearly fourteen years on mostly electric guitars, I'm learning how wonderful the acoustic truly is. I've got a l-o-n-g way to go on the acoustic and anything you're willing to share is a treasured offering. Thanks a million!

Just last weekend, we saw your concert in Bristol and it was as great as I thought it would be. I have seen Wyatt a couple of times and he is talented as well, but I have waited many years to get to see you in concert because I feel you are the ICON to Guitarists. And of course ... you didn't let me down!! The concert was wonderful ! I'd just like to thank you for the chance to acctually get to see your talent in person. Because you are, without a doubt one of the most talented guitar players in the world and deserve to be recognized for that talent. Thanks again, Mike Brooks

I'm a novelist and university professor who has been a fan of Tony's for close to thirty years. I love listening to his music, because it's the work of a great artist who never settles for less than the best he can give. I hope we'll be hearing him for another three decades--at least. Hats off to the man.

CAUGHT THE SHOW IN BRISTOL. GUITAR WORK WAS INFALLABLE. HOWEVER, WAS DISSAPPOINTED TO NOT SEE THE OLD D-28. WAS DISSAPPOINTED IN TONY'S LACK OF ATTACK ON HIS SANTA CRUZ AND WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE LACK OF ATTACK ON THE MIKE. THE SANTA CRUZ MIKE MIX SOUNDED TEENEY. WHAT'S NEXT? FISHMAN TRANSDUCER'S?

Rice fan since '81. Had a Rice model (Brazilian) since '85. It's the last guitar I'll ever own, not just because it sounds so good, but because Tony's name is in it. Tony, please visit the heartland more often! Love to see you in Little Rock sometime. You remain the best ever. There will be lots of pickers, but only one Rice.

I have been a fan of great guitar music for over 20 years now and have yet to see another guitarist that gets a more soulful tone or is as smooth than MR. Tony Rice. Mr. Rice IS the standard by which all other guitar players are judged. No if's and's or but's about it. End of Story. Hail to the Chief!

J-daddy let me ask you a question. The next time you hear a guitar solo on a recording you never heard before, who's solo would be identifyable Kenny's or Tony's? There are thousands of fast pickers in every type of music, just take trip to Winfield to the Flatpick Championship(in which Kenny took second place). There are however very few who have a truely unique sound. Add that to the technicality of Tony's playing and you have a master in his own right. And to wrap this up, try listening to one of Kenny's solos, I'll bet you'll hear a Rice lick in there somewhere.

I have been studying Tony stuff for about four years now and he has influenced my playing and my personal style more than anyone. I was wondering if there was any chance that Tony would ever do another learning video for Homespun? I hope so, anything Tony teaches is always a whole new musical world opened to me. Also I was wondering if anyone would know where I could send a copy of my cd so Tony might hear it, not so much for personal gain or anything but just because if I actually thought Tony might hear it, then I would be astonished. Also I would like to know, if possible, more about Tonys feelings on his encounter with the late great Jerry Garcia,(also a big influence to me), I mean info that wasnt discussed on the Pizza Tapes. Thats all for now, by the way, thanks for making this web site, its my favorite one on the internet, when Im online that is. Most of the time Im trying to learn those Tony licks. Thanks agian Joshua

There's an old issue of Frets magazine where Tony tells the story of how he got the guitar. Seems like a guy that owned a liquor store had loaned Clarence some money and the Bone was collateral. The store owner ended up with the guitar and then Clarence got killed. Apparently Tony and Grisman found the guy and got the guitar appraised. Since it was in bad shape the guitar was sold for like 500 bucks or something. I'm sure I got a lot of the details wrong. Maybe Mr. Rice can clarify. I think the story is also mentioned it in the wonderful interview with TR Bryan Kimsey did for Flatpicking Guitar Magazine. I don't know about the pellet hole. I've always wondered though. WC

Hi Tony. It is really neat that You have Your on web-site now. It is way over due. I have been fortunate enough to see You in concert several times and You never cease to amaze me. You along with Yngwie Malmsteen,Steve Vai and Eric Johnson are my guitar heroes. I would also like to say that You are always nice and and gracious to Your fans. I had the chance to meet Yngwie once and he was a total a** **** That made me loose a lot of respect for him. So what I guess IM, trying to say is that IM glad You wasnt Like that. Tony I've seen you perform several times the last being Mountain Stage in Charleston WV. I play guitar and have a Henderson #81. I had thought about bringing it to you so you could play it. For some reason it doesn't sound as good when I play it. Seariously you have been a real insperation to me over the last 20 some years. I would really like to learn to play Manzanita. Can you send me the tab or how I can get my hands on one. I can play the begining but the turn around for some reason has got me stumped. Thanks from fellow picker. Ron Walker

Love the website. I have had the pleasure of seeing Tony perform 4 times which, for me, there are only two other performers I have seen as many times. I hope you keep coming to the Greenville area!! Take care and keep Picking:)

I agree about the crowd James. I was sitting on the front, and there were people who struggled to get up there and stand near the front, when all they did was talk and yell the whole time! They could have done that in the parking lot, and not four feet from the greatest picker to walk the Earth! Nevertheless, I enjoyed Tony's playing once I could hear it. I am in awe of the man!

tony recently played at a show in charlotte nc(the visuallight theater)where my dad(al wood)opened the show and played with tony and vasser, along with larry keel,he had a blast and said it reminded him of the old days.wish i could have been ther, but i was on the road myself, playing with david via,or i would have been there playing with dad.we are getting something together(dad and i)for a show at the grey eagle in asheville nc,and we were wondering,if the scheduling permits, tony would be interested in playing with us.i know you get this all the time, but between my dads following and my own following her,it would be a successful show, but to have tony would blow it through the roof.if it could ever work out,we would be honored.we are thinking of something in august,or around that time.my # is 8282362933,dads number is8286350304.,sincerly aaron wood

The show in Charlotte at the Visulite Theater was very good...I think...I couldn't really tell because of all the loud talkers. If I were you, I'd leave that one for Larry Keel and his boys next time. There seemed to be a great lack of appreciation by the crowd for what they were hearing. I am glad I had the opportunity to see you and Vassar, though.

Hi Tony & Pam and "the kids"- I just rummaging thru a box of cassettes that I had left in my truck and found "Tony Rice and John Carlini - River Suite for Two Guitars". So I came in the house, turned it one and sat back and grinned. That must have been a great session to work on. Guess I need to get the CD now so I can listen to it while I fish. Best to all.

MY EARLIEST RECOLLECTION OF HEARING TONY WAS ON THE NEW SOUTH OLD HOME PLACE ALBUM WHEN I WAS A KID. I WAS TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND OR APPRECIATE TONY'S MUSICIANSHIP THEN.BUT AT ABOUT THE AGE OF 13 I REALLY GOT INTO TONY'S MUSIC.I CANNOT COUNT THE HOURS I'VE SPENT LISTENING TO TONY'S RECORDINGS.I WILL HAVE TO SAY THAT TONY HAS BEEN MY BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCE .HIS TONE,STYLE,AND TIMING ARE IMPECCABLE.THE FIRST TIME I GOT TO SEE TONY WAS AT THE FRONTIER RANCH IN 1986 WITH THE BLUEGRASS ALBUM BAND. I'LL NEVER FORGET IT.I'VE SEEN TONY SEVERAL TIMES DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS AND EACH PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN UNFORGETTABLE.A MAN GOES THROUGH LIFE AND HOPES TO SAY THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE MADE AN INFLUENCE ON HIM.SOME MAY NEVER GET THE OPPORTUNITY,BUT I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TONY FOR PROVIDING MY LIFE WITH YOUR MUSIC. I had the pleasure of meeting Tony for the first time about a year at the Ken Farmer Auction Concert.I must say I was impressed not only with Tony's musical abilities, but also with how down to earth and personable he was. Tony Rice is an inspiration to all the young people that are now begining to enter the bluegrass field. I hope to see Tony again this year at the Floyd Virgina Concert. I have two sons whom I play in a bluegrass band with, Tony has had a tremendous influence on them both, his music transcends time, he is amazing. Keep it up Tony!!

Hi Pam and Tony- Just wanted to add to the hub-bub about Tony being "left out" as one of the artists who have made a lasting impression in bluegrass, jazzgrass, newgrass and spacegrass. With all due respect to those who were mentioned, a day without Tony Rice is like a day without oxygen.

Hey TR, Again, it's your buddy Allen Tolbert (and, without a slight doubt, your ABSOLUTE biggest fan). Hope all is well with you and Pam. I was just mainly wanting to saay my agreements with the fellow below whom mentioned Tony's absence in the CMT tribute. Tony is THE music. No one even touches him and that was surely ridiculous. Tony presence in this world earn him the credit that he deserves. If you want the truth, Tony was jus too good for CMT to get him. His mastership of being a guitarist, singer and human being are waaaaay past the credit that he receives. Nonethesless, Tony is just the best. There is no doubt of that. I highly respect his musicianship, as well as his wonderful personality. Tony, we love you to death and are always there for you when you need us. I cannot say in words the amount of appreciation that I have for you. YUou are most likely my reason for living. Your music pulls me through my life and I am just absolutely insane it. I cannot count the daily hours in which I spend listening to T's music. Many many thanks and God Bless, Allen

Tony and everybody else in this guest book, I was just wondering if anybody watch the so called Bluegrass Tribute week on CMT and noticed the absence of Tony? I don't think there is any other guitar player that has infuenced acoustic music like TR. or any other player that has had the kind of role in the resugence of Pre-war quality guitars like TR. So why the absense of this on the so called Tribute is a mystery. Oh well I guess it's up to us to sing his praises.

It sure is nice to see that you are touring again and that you will be in Florida. I e-mailed you before and your wife was kind enough to answer my inquiries. I will not be able to make your Spirit of the Suwannee gig as I am still in the Keys but how about checking into a place in Homestead called the Main Street Cafe. They showcase musicians of your caliber as well as there is a place down in Islamorada called Pelican Cove Resort that is showcasing singer-songwriters on Tuesday nights. You wife was interested in contacts in South Florida so here are two you can check into. Would love to hear you sing again and feel free to contact me back if you need assistance with contacts. Hej! (hello in Swedish) I just love your music and your guitarplaying. You rock! I'm speechless... I dream of seeing you live in Sweden with Sam Bush, Ricky Skaggs, Norman Blake, and all the other great musicians you've been playing with. But since I've heard that you're no fan of flying, I guess I´m going to the states instead. But you'd better still be playing when I get the cash I need, or my life will be in vain. =) See you! After twenty years of listening to you, I still can't get over it - there's just simply no one on the planet who plays like Tony Rice. I love your music, Tony. Your music is a gift from God that touches the deepest part of my life. I listened to you on the day that my first child was born. I listened to you on the evening that I buried my mother. You've brought me such comfort. Your music has touched me and made me react with feelings that I didn't even know that I still had. I wish there was some way to say these things without sounding like, well, a cliche, or a groupie. I'm not normally prone to gushing...but...Thanks. You really have the most special gift. I appreciate all that you do and pray for God's blessing of peace and protection upon you in your journey.

I don't know why it took me so long to look for this site, but I'm glad I finally found it! Just wanted to say "thanks Tony". You've been an inspiration to me for a long time; once I heard Backwaters, I knew I wasn't crazy! I've tried to follow your advice (from an article in Frets years ago), to "play what you hear in your head." Thanks again (and Unit of Measure is terrific).

Tony Rice has my vote for all-time greatest flat picker. I have listened to him for 30 years and am always impressed. I live in Lexington, NC not far from Tony on a 65 acre secluded farm with a 150 year old log cabin we use for a guest house. Tony has an open invitation to come and stay and write music or just get away for awhile.

I want to tell you how much I enjoyed hearing you at IBMA - thanks to you and the lovely Pam for your gracious hospitality. I hope to get to know Pam better one of these days; she is a fascinating lady. I hear the "Running Wild" CD is very wonderful (why does that not surprise me?) and plan to get it ASAP. I hope you get back up here to NYS before too long - it would be a ray of sunshine for us!! Take care of yourself, please, and stay healthy. Miss you a lot - Carol Rumpf

Dear Tony, I first started playing guitar when I was 10 years old. An older kid named Danny Lilly from Franklin County, VA. played bluegrass and introduced me to that wonderful world. Over the years I have studied acoustic and electric styles, and pedal steel guitar. Gospel, Bluegrass, rock, pop, jazz. I love them all and I played professionally for six years. I just purchased your lastest CD and have really enjoyed listening to where you have taken the music. What has been the most fun is listening to traditional sounds with your special gift to them. Thank you for sharing your great talent with all of us. See you in Blackburg in February. I am bringing the whole family. All the best. Maybe you would sign my Martin D-28.

Hello Mr. Rice!! At the risk of sounding like a nutcase, I'd like to tell you that after 8/9/95, I honestly thought that I would never find any music that would touch me again. Then I heard you play at Martinsville High School 10/5/95! I have followed you over the years since, lucky enough to see the show with David Grisman at the Acoustic Stage in Hickory, NC in 97, every merlefest since 96, and even was lucky enough to get you to autograph a picture for me at Wintergrass in 99 that I took of you and Grisman! (later got him to sign it too!) I'm glad you missed the Bluegrass Classic in Ohio in 97 (I think)... the tornado was NOT fun! You would have hated it! :) Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your music! and keeping music alive for me. Take care, and hope to hear you soon!! Peace, Cyndi

Tony, If I die tonight, seeing and hearing you perform at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, West Virginia, put the icing on the cake for me. I appreciate you takin' the time to talk to us old rednecks after the show. The pictures my wife took of you and me turned out great. You are my hero, Hoss!! I had to sell my Martin D-16 a few months back, bills to pay and groceries to buy. When me and the Mrs. get back on our feet, I'm gonna try to get another D-16, or D-18. I did get to play one of your signature series Santa Cruz' a while back, in a music store. If the good Lord's willin', maybe I'll own one of those someday. I am a disabled veteran and I sit around the house a lot listenin' to your fine cd's. Just got the new RRH&P as a birthday gift from a pickin' buddy for my birthday on Jan. 8th. Sorry I rambled on. Just want you to know how much enjoyment and inspiration you have given me through the years!! Take care and God Bless you and yours.

I really miss all of the festivals and seeing Tony play. I hope he has Wintergrass on his schedule in Tacoma on Feb. 21-24. I'll never forget how blown away I was seeing Tony play the first time at The Down Home in Johnson City, Tenn a long time ago. tony u are the most powerful influence on me in your music im 17 years old been playing guitar for 2 years now and im left handed but i just play a regular right handed guitar everyone told me it was practically impossible but when i first started out i ordered your homespun tape a intimate lesson with tony rice and i kept playing along with it till i finally mastered those songs on it and ive just been learning new stuff from all your cds ive learned to play by ear which lets me listen to your playing and get a idea of what your doing its really tough to figure out and i surely cant figure out what your doing when your playing at 120 miles an hour haha. I see in one of your messages your gonna make a new homespun tape thatll be great cant wait till it comes out ill see what i can learn with it well tony keep picking buddy

Rice Man, It is good to see you have a website, I didn't know you had one until now, I'll added you a link from our New Reflections site. I was talking to Milton Harkey today about you, I told him I hadn’t seen you in a while. I was told a while back by someone that they thought you know my dad Pee Wee Davis and My Uncle Hubert Davis, I just thought I would see for myself, I had never thought to ask you about it before. Anyway keep up the great pickin buddy and tell Wyatt I said hello JD

Mr. Rice, I just want to thank you. You are the reason I've been playing bluegrass for the past 11 years and you cannot realize what an inspiration you have been to me. I cut my bluegrass teeth on the Bluegrass Album Band stuff and it's still some of the most played music in my cd player. Thanks again for what you do! By the way, I'm looking forward to your new instructional video! Take care and God bless, Jarrod Harris

Mr. Rice- I passed you on Cone Blvd in Greensboro yesterday. (nice ride!) I was going to honk and hold up one of your CD cases like some kinda freak or something, but I was in the wife's car and had no GOOD discs with me. So I acted like a mature human being instead. I hope you weren't playing in Greensboro yesterday, because I'm PO'd if I missed out on it. Best wishes, WC

Hey Ya'll I think the website is real nice. Thank you for playing so much Mr. Rice. I can't hardly talk to anyone about guitar picking without hearing how you did a version of that at this festival or on that album. I tell you what, that's a real feat. Thats it I guess. Have a good New Year. Mackerel McGee

To Tony and all Tony Rice Fans: The New Web site that I have been working on for RRH&P is now open for membership, but still a 'newbie.' I have posted the photos Larry (Rice) sent of RRH&P, Never Published Tony Rice and The Tony Rice Unit photos, a Welcome Home link, links to most of your friends in the 'biz' such as Vassar Clements, Sam Bush, Rickie Simpkins, Wyatt Rice, etc. I have also added an Ask Sue & Sue link to answer questions for the band, we'll post Tour Venue Schedules as soon as we get an update. This will be a place where fans can come and join free, keep up with the latest from RRH&P, plus all members are welcome to post messages, make their own personal photo albums, and upload photos from our Pictures Album. The band RRH&P deserves a site like this where fans can come together and chat at Chatter Matters and not worry about anyone making any unwanted comments. RRH&P is a NO NONSENSE FAMILY SITE and it's going so well, your friend John McEuen is going to help us any way he can. We also have a Tribute to your friend John Hartford by Dekek Halsey, and a John Hartford photo album. I hope you and your fans will like it. I have a new Co-manager who added the opening page with you favorite color, but we're waiting to see what you and the band will want as a Welcome Message. So, even though it's a 'newbie' our hearts are in it and we have set a goal to make RRH&P the Number One MSN Country-Bluegrass Site on the MSN Music Entertainment Chart. We know we can do it because RRH&P is going to start "Running Wild." Carol Sue and Fiddlin' Sue ~ Website Managers for Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pederson.

I understand that Tony likes to fish. I'm wondering (outloud) if he fly-fishes or uses the more conventional methods (bait cast or spinning)? Apparently I've lost my train of thought somewhere vis-a-vis guitar playing but what the heck!

Ive started playing acoustic about a year ago after i heard bryan suttons " ready to go". Never heard bluegrass before. Later i found tony rice and i think its some of the most original playing ive ever heard considering that bluegrass is so full of licks and clichés. Ive been listening to the sound and how the individual notes stand out. I know your guitar and playing helps this alot but id like to what you use to amplify and qualize your guitar. Do you use any pedals? Stay cool! Rune (does tony read/reply on these questions, anyone?)
