APRIL - JULY 2002

These are the guestbook entries for April - July 2002.

Dang people it's just music. There's always another show, good one and bad ones just pop in "Cold on the shoulder"...close your eyes and it'll all be alright. If yall were all that disaapointed with the show post the comment on the promoters website. Maybe you'll get a refund. Me personally would love the chance to see a screw up by the man ....it make him human. I've screwed up on my job a few times but I didn't quit or give the money back...you try your best to make everyone happy. Tony does not owe any of you any thing. If you don't like what you see or hear leave and get your money back. His payed his debt to the music industry and we're all better for it. P.S. T. next time just throw in a G run and they'll never know the difference.

Tony, I have been a HUGE fan of your music, and your way of playing for many years now. I have studied all kinds of music from blues, jazz, classical, to bluegrass, new acoustic music, and evan Grateful Dead type improv. You are by far my biggest influence and inspiration. I love trying to play any of your music, weather it be Red Haired Boy, or Fish Scale, and eveything in between. Im going to the Jamgrass show in Cinncinati, OH. on August 2nd. I cant wait to see you and Peter jam out again. I thought that I read in the Unit of Measure cd that you were retraining your voice, I was wondering how that was going? (if you dont mind me asking). I saw you at the Southern Theater in Columbus OH. a year or so ago and there was one inparticular song that you did the bass harmony vocal, and it sounded awesome. Im sure you are very busy but If you or your wife have time to answer questions my E-mail is oms6@cs.com Thanks again for being such a big influence. PS. You have my deepest sympathy, in the recent loss of your friend. Sincerly Joshua

B. Riley, that was not Chris who removed comments from the guestbook at chrishillman.com, it was a person who designed and sometimes maintains his web site. No one asked her to do it, although the guest book does state that negative, profane or otherwise inappropriate comments may be removed, which is kind of standard for artist guestbooks. I set the site up technically and help maintain it and I had no problem with any comments posted there, and I don't believe Chris Hillman would have had any concern either. As far as I know, he did not see them, although he does look at the site when he can.

So sorry, but I feel I have to step in and make comment here. I feel "The Tony fan no more" is totally out of context here. As for that, all on the subject of RRHP at Gray Fox is out of context. Wouldn't it be proper to sit down with a pen, a piece of paper and write a letter instead of posting comment here? Put it in a stamped envelope and drop it in the nearest mailbox. Here is a little help. Tony Rice, C/O SpaceGrass Productions, 2421 Baker Crossroad, Reidsville, NC 27320. For Larry, it's Larry Rice, P.O. Box 1574, Crystal River, FL 34423. For Chris, can't seem to find an address there so you're on your own. All at Gray Fox that saw the show and was not satisfied with what they saw and heard should write the promoter of the Gray Fox Festival and demand your money back for that portion of the show and only that portion. "Cousin?" Hummm... That's a new one. People should realize this is not AOL Instant Messenger but someone's place of business. Wouldn't be great if everyone could learn how to look at ones own self and figure out how to mind your own business.

As my server was down for the last couple days, I have not been keeping up on the message board. Now upon reading the last few messages, I have found and read Chris H's comments and hope that he puts this grey fox thing behind him. Also, I have to agree with Doc Roberts and W.C.Rushton. And Joe American for that matter. I read what Pam had said about negative comments and that I think these comments should be held for a different discussion room. Albeit that this is Tony's site and that he could pull the plug at anytime. On the other hand, I hope Tony can shed some light on this matter in his what's new section. Whatever he says, I respect him for saying it and I always will respect him for being a musician. One does not gain respect in musicianship over night, and I think we all know that as guitar players. O.K., I think I'll get back to jamming along with red haired boy now...Later...scott

Some folks are forgetting that this is the "Tony Rice" website. Well, I'll tell all of you damn quick that I have seen and heard the T-man play and sing in about every type of grouping and every manner of circumstance you can imagine, and I have NEVER seen him be anything other than dead serious and professional in every instance. That being said, I never did think the RRH&P grouping was a very good showcase for Tony's talents. Tony is at his best in what I like to call a "guitar band". Some groups like to put the banjo up as the driving influence in the band, and others the mandolin, and still others the fiddle or dobro. In every instance where Tony was the leading influence, the music is the best you'll ever hear---nobody DRIVES a band like Tony!!! Never mind his usually tasteful lead work---the man is simply the BEST rhythm guitarist in the world. I repeat---nobody DRIVES a band like Tony. Now, in his setting in RRH&P, he gets very little chance to do either one---lead OR rhythm. Yes, I do have the latest RRH&P album, "Running Wild", and I personally think there are about two cuts on the album worth a second listening, and it's directly because Tony's not being allowed to drive the band. Larry is the only passable singer on the album, and the whole thing is somehow out of balance. I feel safe in saying that you'll soon see Tony in a much different setting, playing again the type of music that made him the best damned front man in the business. In the interim, quit trying to blame him for Hillman and Peterson's shortcomings as musicians and singers, and his brother's problem (if indeed he even has one) and complement the man for having to carry the whole bunch on his own shoulders. You people are really starting to piss me off. Hell, if it was as bad as you'all say, I don't blame Tony for leaving the stage! And you people oughta understand why he did, seeing the type of professional he really is. Go somewhere else and kick somebody else's dog while it's down! Meanwhile, I'll play second guitar to Tony on any stage, anywhere, and be damned proud to do it.

I talked to John McEuen a while back and he said that "Circle III" will be out October 1st, per no production problems. Tony is on it, Josh Graves, Nashville Bluegrass Band, Earl, Del and the boys, many others. My review of Tony's playing in the edition of GRITZ out now is great. I saw him in April and he smoked it. He is why I donot playguitar for a living. If I can not play up to that caliber then I should keep to messing around the house.I have heard from industry people as well as fans in the stands and obviously Grey Fox did not go well. This is a chance for Larry to turn it around. The shame of it is, is that "Running Wild" is such a great CD to build on.Truly one of the best CD's of 2001. Another group to check out, to put us on a different subject, is David Peterson and 1946. I became aware of them not long ago. They are on fire and worthy of some attention. My interview with David will be up in a week or so, in the mean time get more info at www.1946band.com. I am hearing good things about Corn Tornado also. Anybody see their set? Would love to hear about it. Later. Derek, www.gritz.net

Ref. RRH&P at grey fox first it confused me then I relized they were just imitating Red Knuckles , though Tim did it much better again no problem with herb , tony or chris and only small issues with the festival as a whole but I guess a decade from now I will still be tossing around memories with my friends and ," Do you remember Sat Night grey fox 2002" will come up and we will all laugh about it again Tony ,Herb, and Chris, Thank you Larry, you need to find your heart again

i should point out that i performed at grey fox and that its still, in my estimation, the finest festival anywhere. even a really bad show by a couple bluegrass/country icons didnt dent my appreciation of the festival. i had the time of my life--for the 7th time! but i was horrified by the RRHP show. wish it hadnt happened.

Hi Tony, just wanted to tell you how much I love your music. I have enjoyed listening to your music everyday since I first heard you perform in 1993. Thanks! I am looking forward to seeing you perform at Jones Beach in September. Pamela, thank you for taking the time to respond to my emails back in April. It meant a lot to me. There seems to be a great deal of polarization regarding commentary on the RRHP set at Grey Fox. I was there, saw the set and am a long time fan of Tony Rice. Tony has had a great deal of influence on much more than a generation of guitarists, myself included. I liken his effect on bluegrass guitar as similar in nature to Earl Scruggs on the banjo albeit a different era. Tony also stretched the envelope in so many other directions (listen to River Suite for Two Guitars with John Carlini as a recent example). I was disappointed by the RRHP set at Grey Fox for a number of reasons. However, I'm not sure that this particular combination was well suited for closing a show to begin with. I'm sure Tony can move on from this. Last Labor Day week-end, I saw Tony play a marvelous set at night with Peter Rowan at Thomas Pte. Beach. It was a very cold night and Tony played flawlessly, with his usual fluidity, dexterity and seeming effortlessness (I'm always amazed at the economy of both of his hands). There was also a lot of new stuff he was doing and most of it seemed to be improvised. Tony is a gifted, resourcelful musician that inspires so many musicians and listeners alike and I'm sure has much more to give us for many more years.

What a great show at the Grey Fox. I don't know what everyone is talking about. I was sitting 2nd row for his solo and it was outstanding. The entire perfomance was as good as it gets. Just wondering if anyone has access to the recording of that show. I must hear it again. If anyone out there knows where I could get this I would greatly appreciate it. Wow was that a great show! Thanks.

Huh, Grey Fox...Missed it. Robert Plant from Led Zep had a bad cold when they did the MSG show that was turned into the movie Song Remains The Same. Maybe they shoulda cancelled that one too. Or how about Jim Morrison in Florida when the cops came and took him off stage. hmm, famous words...."the show must go on". 12 years ago I was on stage in front of 500 and my tie got lodged in between the strings and the body of my guitar. What an embarrassment. Kept me off stage for 10 years after that cuz I let it get me down. I get with some old friends and we have a few drinks. before ya know it we have had too much before playing. It happens from time to time. Tony, Pam, put an X on the calendar date and move on. Even God couldn't do it all in one day. Just some thoughts from someone who wasn't there, who wishes he was no matter what the turnout was. Play on Tony....the "unprofessional guitar player" Scott Havlick

Poor Tony... All I can say is that if you are going to get paid as a headline act you should act like one and be ready to go when the time comes. I think the right thing for Tony to have done at Greyfox would have been to cancel his slot of the show. If what I hear is true, and what I got is from long time Rice fans who were at the show, Tony should have realized that they we not ready to go and just cancel. Who knows they might have been able to put together an all star jam or something. Even the Dry Branch Fire Squad could have done a better job. I am just glad that I only went for Thursday night and then headed to Jamgrass in Burlington to see Dawg, Bush, and Rowan. Now that was a killer show. As for the person who wants the negitive comments to stop, to bad. This is a general guest book for people to voice thier opinions. As for showing up late to the Jamgrass show on Sunday... No excuse man No excuse. Tony, you get paid to be a Pro. Start acting like one!!!

As far as RRHP at Grey Fox is concerned, I was there anxioysly awaiting their performance. My first reaction was of great disappointment. Then it turned to concern. I know that Tony has had his share of health problems lately, and I sensed that he was trying to make the best of a bad situation (playing solo) until it got completely out of hand. No artist wants that to happen. We all have bad nights. Unfortunately the spotlight was on when they had a very bad night. I hope they are able to come back from this. They are good people with serious problems. I hope they can get the help they need. I'm sure they could use some positive vibes from all of us. They all possess great talent. After all, they never would have been offered that spot if they didn't deserve it. I say God Bless em and wish them a speedy recovery. --Phil

Whatever the problems were with the Gray Fox show, Tony Rice has given me great music for as long as I can remember. Those that cannot stand by an Artist of this stature should hold your comments. I thank Tony Rice for what he has done for me. He has paid the dues and does not need the sunshine fans who are just looking for something to complain about. What I am hearing is more than a bad night. It is talked about on boards all over the web. A little under the weather, a rant about LSD? People other than Tony walking off the stage? Chris and Herb salvaging a song or two and then noticing they were alone and saying," I guess we are done?" a set that lasted maybe 20 minutes? If none of this is true, I want to hear it. It is easy to bash people and some relish in it. But if it was this bad then we all should help if we can. This is the only concert with the four of them this year. If I drove a long way I would have been steamed. But I wasn't there so I want to hear what really happened without any 'Jump on board" attitude. H

I'm sure tony is not happy about the show himself. I am a fan of tony's music and always will be, I just wanted to let him know how I felt and his site is the only avenue I knew to get the message to him apparently I'm not the only one who needed to do this. I will see him again and hope to see his brilliance again.

Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow. I was always a big Elvis fan and when I saw his last concert EVER in Inianapolis, I was hurt beyond belief. and knowing what this man could once do and also knowing that this man would never see the snow fly.Seeing in his fans eyes that this was a man that could do no wrong. But if Elvis would have had people around him that had some balls about them, he still might be with us. I love Tony and his music and I hope he sees how many wonderful fans he has. I hope and Pray that another one of my "Heroes," doesnt have the same future. We love You Tony and wish You the best. Always remember that. God Bless.

What a show! I performed at Gray Fox this year, so I witnessed the RRHP stage show as well as the much discussed backstage "show". It was both embarrasing and sad. I know many of you are saying that "no one can be 100% all the time" and "they are only human", but this particular set was WAY beyond acceptable. You had to see it to see how much of a trainwreck it actually was. I can state unequivocably that MANY performers back stage saw a worried-looking Chris Hillman practice with Ronnie and Herb for a couple hours without the Rice Brothers, who arrived fashionably late and (at least one brother) more than a bit "under the weather." Many of us grew up watching Tony and have worked our danged asses of just to reach the level of musicianship required to play a set at Gray Fox. To watch legends treat their many fan's adulation so cavalierly is just a shame. I love the entire Rice Family and wish they would do something about their problems. Its time to grow up, boys.

Folks, listen. . . To everyone here that is making negative comments; what is it that you think you are accomplishing? Do you all think that Tony is sitting back laughing about the Grey Fox show? Do you all really think Tony was just goofing off while trying to find the place in NH? Of course not! ou guys have no right to judge Tony, or Larry, or anyone else. I do NOT see you all up there night after night, driving all over thecountry to get up on stage and play when you have osteoarthritis in your hands. Do any of you actually have it in you to GIVE as much as Tony does? Night after night, with his hands hurting, magic is flowing from those hands, and even when he doesn't feel like it, he is out there giving to us. He is giving us the wonderful music that he has given for so many years. He is giving me the inspiration that I need to be a better picker. He is giving constantly, and we all take and take, but when it can't be given for whatever reason, you all feel vindictive? What is that about? The posts to the site, the phone calls to bash Tony are not helping the situation. Eric Clapton once played an entire show out of key in Japan, and like I just told Kathi, Tony is a better guitar player, and I am SURE he will get through this. So, why don't you all stop it with the bashing, and go listen to some music. It'll make you feel better. I am listening right now to Peter and Tony doing Midnight Moonlight, and I really don't have any reason to bash Tony, and neither do you all. Tony, you've bene through worse man. Don't let these people drag you down to their level. I'm looking forward to seeing you at Floyd Fest, if not before then!!!! BTW, I enjoyed the Listener article, and I can recommend a really great place to check out some next generation ideas for your gear next time you are in Nashville, or even in Greensboro you can check it out anytime! briley@triad.rr.com

To JB and CL, sorry but performers of Tony's caliber (I am a fan) have no excuse in putting on a show like they did. On an off-night, they could play far better than they did. They could wake up in the morning and strap on their instruments before wiping the sleep from their eyes and play more professionally than they did. They came across as unprofessional, and quite honestly the rumors of them (especially Larry) being hammered sure could have been true from what I saw (seeing Larry stumble up the stairs to the stage). And if that is true, there is absolutely NO excuse in professionals getting drunk before a show, particularly one as high profile as Grey Fox closing set. Again, can't say that the drunk rumors are true...Whatever the case, I have been seeing shows for over 25 years, and most musicians of their caliber would never have come across the way they did, especially at a high-profile slot like closing one of the biggest and most highly revered bluegrass festival in the world. So, sorry to rain on your parade, and I know that they are only human, am I am indeed a big fan of Tony, have seen him previously, and have seen Herb Pedersen play with Jerry Garcia and others. But what I witnessed at Grey Fox was flat out unacceptable, and I feel that an explanation and apology should be forthcoming.

After reading the negative comments concerning RRHP's performance at Grey Fox, I was reminded of seeing Nolan Ryan pitch against the Giants back when he was with the Astros. I had a seat behind home plate and anxiously awaited watching a true legend (and future Hall of Famer)pitch. In the second inning, Mr. Ryan began to suffer from back spasms and pulled himself from the game. The Astros went on to lose the game. Needless to say I was enormously disappointed. So, did Mr. Ryan "cheat" me by pulling himself from the game because he was injured? Did the Astros "cheat" me because they lost that night? The answer is simply- NO! I challenge any of us to be perfect every day. I challenge anyone who is a musician to be "on" for every performance. Perhaps RRHP had a bad night or perhaps your own expectations were too high. I have a tremendous amount of respect the members of RRHP and make no bones about my respect for Tony Rice but to slam him on his own page is irresponsible and disrespectful. And you call yourselves FANS?

I agree that the RRHP set at GreyFox was a disappointment. I think there is a high standard of expectation for a Saturday night closing act. Hillman and Pedersen were fine, but the Rice brothers were clearly struggling. I hope to see a better show next time.

To those who would bash Tony and R,H&P. You have to remember that what you hear at a show is something you'll never hear again exactly the same. It's spontaneous and a very magical thing. I'm not sure what you "bashers" do for a living but I'm sure you're not on top of your game every day you're at work. You can't imagine how many variables go into playing on stage. The sound may suck coming out of your monitors so you can't hear yourself or the others. You may have personal issues going on in your life and ya just can't concentrate on the task at hand. (I've been there) Or hell, you might just feel like hammered dog poop. You can't fault a man who's provided us (his real fans) with years and years and years of innovation and GREAT music and bash him for one unfortunate show. If'n ya do, I really don't consider you a fan and you shouldn't post on the FAN SITE!! Put your arm around his shoulder and say "Hey man, don't let the bastards get you down." Man! You can spend twentysome years playing gigs and blowin' the socks offa folks but play one bad show and some people think you suck for life. Well, not this West "By God" Virginia boy!!! Play on brother!!

To those making the negative comments about the recent performance: Do you people realize that you are talking about an actual human being? Tony and the other guys are not gods like some of you try to make them out to be. They are human and make mistakes and have bad nights from time to time. It must be hard to live up to all of your standards 100% of the time. He must feel an enormous amount of pressure and must be thankful to have such loving fans.

I must say that indeed, the criticisms about the RRHP performance at the Grey Fox Festival are absolutely true. I had high expectations as I love Tony's playing and have seen Mr. Pedersen many times, but the performance at Grey Fox was absolutely abysmal, an embarrassment. The lack of timing was beyond belief! I truly hope that an explanation is given here or to the Grey Fox people, because one is due. To come on the stage as the last act on Saturday night after incendiary performances by Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Nickel Creek, Natalie McMaster, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Seldom Scene and others and be so totally unprepared was simply not right. To all the fans, I'm not knocking Tony and the guys for anything EXCEPT the Saturday Grey Fox fiasco, for which they should be embarassed. I hope to someday learn that there is some kind of reasonable explanation for that lack of a performance. Peace.

While one of the previous posts (that raised a bunch of ire) was a little harshly worded, I think John Wensley was right on. The collective feeling at the Grey Fox show was that the entire audience had been cheated out of what typically is the marquee event (Saturday night closing act). Too much stumbling around due to whatever and just a plain uninspired set. Tony had to leave the stage because, according to Hillman, his "hand hurt." Perhaps, but unfortunately the rest of us were subjected to a bunch of spontaneous and rehashed Byrds tunes. No one who went back to their camp sites early were dissapointed, let me put it that way. As my soapbox, I grew up on Tony's playing from JD to DGQ to his solo albums to the Unit, and I have always been amazed and inspired by his playing. However, to see someone who I've spent so much emotion, time and money on shortchange the audience and basically phone in his performance really colors my view. Call this constructive criticism, Tony--you still have the talent, so don't let it waste away.

Well--I didn't have the misfortune of seeing the Saturday night mishap at Grey Fox, but on Sunday night when he was scheduled to play with Pete Rowan at JamGrass--Tony didn't even show up until 5 songs left in the set. Pete was pissed I think, and who can blame him. Tony may be an awesome guy and a fantastic musician, but it seems to me that he had a pretty crappy weekend. Just tellin' it like it is...

Greyfox tonys playing was outstanding and over the top penderson and Hillman brought tears to my eyes with "Turn Turn Turn" the entire act though was a sham disjointed and laughable in its presentation the single most unprofessional show I ever paid 300$(100$ ticket plus all the other costs involved in going to greyfox to basically see this one act) While I look forward to seeing each of rrp&h as SOLO artists I would not go see this collection of jokers again EVER That was bullsh*t what went down at Greyfox and what is with the "acid " comment??? was that really needed??? Sorry just calling it like I saw it

Let me take you back to June 30, 1989, when I first met Tony and Pamela Rice. The Tony Rice Unit was playing at the internationally famous Station Inn in Nashville. During the TRU second set, the fans' were so caught up with Tony, Wyatt, Jimmy Gaudreau, Mark Schatz, and the music they were making, it was as if everyone in the room was on some kind of magic carpet ride. I know because I have a tape recording of the entire show, plus the radio station ID Tony gave me on tape for WPAY. Rickie Simpkins flat sawed that fiddle into dust on stage. Backstage he was so pleased that the show had gone so well. I was there at least 20 minutes taking photos and the crowd was still yelling: "Tony! Tonyyyy! Tony!" Finally, Pamela shut the door so we could hear. I can still see the faces in the crowd who had gathered there such as Keith Case, Roland White, Doug Dillard, and others bluegrass legends. You couldn't move. The house was packed. I have the Number One MSN Website on the net: http://groups.msn.com/RiceRiceHillmanPedersen === YES! Someone made the same unkind remark on my site also and we now have WWIII going on as I write defending RRHP! ==== I am here to defend RRHP and to thank them for allowing me to give their fans a place to call home. I get thank you letters each day from fans on my personal email accounts who are too shy to or don't want their comments on the net. But they still want the entire group to know how much they love them and their music. When I get these comments and leters, I forward them to Pamela for Tony. It's unreal to think that anyone would have the nerve to come on a man, any man's site and slam him for the entire world to see. Of course we all know this is not true. I recently asked Doc Roberts from iBluegrass.com to become my Assistant Manager and he wrote back and thanked me for tthe golden opportunity to pay tribute to these legends. Doc says he not only printed the letter I sent, but also framed it to remind him that he was somebody important. This is the kind of humble friends, fans, writers, and an entire volunteer staff of professionals, RRHP attract. I am here to say I mentioned the 1989 show because if 'that guy, those two guys,' had said that in the crowd at the Station Inn, there would have been nothing left but a couple of 'greasy spots,' just like the ole Tiger. Go get 'em, Tony, and take Larry, Chris, and Herb with you. RRHP has fans' on the MSN site who are counting the days till they can get their hands on RRHP 4. But one thing Doc and I agree on is that there are many unkind people in this world who only think of themselves, selfishly. I will get off my Tide box and go back to minding my own business, which is minding the site for the Number One Country-Bluegrass-Folk Group in the world. Oh, thanks to John aka Rattlesnake for saying, "I rock his world!" That sounds like something Derek Halsey would say. I can't wait to see what Derek from Gritz.net and RRHP has to say about this. Tony^Pam^and all the little^^^^'s ==== God loves you, and we at RRHP do, too. Cj === 1.

Yo,Tony, Got a couple a questions for ya. I normally use Phosphor Bronze mediums on my old 'Bone, either D'Addarios or Ernie Ball Studio PB's, and I've been wanting to try out some of the D'Aquisto Nickels you're using. Do you find these new strings have as good a projection and penetration as the PB strings you've used in the past? How 'bout ease of playing? I've got a lot of arthritis (worst one 'o them Itis boys, ya know) in my hands, so this is always a concern. Hope to see ya at Verizon Music Center in Noblesville come the 16th of August. Meanwhile, thanks in advance for your time, and remember, Tony, I know you've had more than your share of pain and troubles, but man, don't ever give up. There ain't enough of us to go around now! It'd do my heart good to hear your voice again, even if only in harmony. I'd be proud to do a tune or two with you, no matter what you sound like. Hang in there, son, and maybe we can speak on the 16th, God willing. W. C.(Bud) Rushton wcrushton@yahoo.com Morgantown, Ind.

It looked like no preperation was made for that show.I hope you still carre for the music we all love so well, thats all I have, peace

Hi Tony, Just stumbled on to your site. I've been a fan of yours since hearing you play with J D Crowe. You have a very distinct style that is highly respected by aspiring musicians. I've caught several of your appearances on TV shows and specials and taped them. Whenever I need a lift I get them out and play 'em! Keep on pickin & hope to meet you in person sometime. Maybe I'll even get to pick my banjo with you!

Tony, Im going to the jamgrass show on AUG. 2 at Riverbend in Ohio. Just wondered if there was any chance that you and the Dawg and the guy from Dark Star that plays Jerrys part would be doing anything from The Pizza Tapes recording? Also my duet will be playing on the lot of that show. Our name is Pilgrims of the Wild, we do alot of Dave and Jerry covers and Dead covers and lots of your stuff too, (well the stuff that we can play that is), and we also have a cd as well. I was also wondering if you would have any advice on how we could expand our own music and shows to other places besides the mid-west? Theres just not alot of places around here that really get into improv and newer acoustic music. If you could reccomend any place to send one of our cds it would be GREATLY appriciated. Well, cant wait to see you and Peter Rowan again. Thanks for all the inspiration and all the dancing your fingers do on that fretboard. One of your biggest fans for life, Redd Smith. My e-mail is (oms6@cs.com) PEACE

Just a few words about an absolute hero of mine. Some of my fondest memories are of me and my Dad riding around on Saturday mornings listening to "Guitar" when I was about 8 years old. Over the years, Tony has been an irreplaceable part of my life. Highschool graduation...Tony, My marriage...Tony, The birth of my kids...Tony, Job changes...Tony. Although I have only met him at various concerts and have never had the pleasure of knowing him personally, his music and his persona has always been a driving force for me. Thanks Tony for all the great times and hopefully many more to come. You will will never know what a friend you have been over "20 some odd years"

In reference to the issue of tortoise shell picks, may I ask if the tortoises were deceased before the shells were removed? I could be wrong here but I am sure that the deceased tortoises would not mind. I think this issue, like others of its kind, get a little out of focus. Please remember that most of your guitars are produced from the "bodies" of trees. Let's spend our energies on feeding the hungry, educating the minds and removing those who bring chaos to the world thru greed, violence and degradation of the body, mind and soul.

What trully amazes me about people are the ends they will go to "speak their piece" on issues like Tony using turtle shells for guitar picks, but where the hell are these people when our fellow Indians are struggling just to make ends meet on places like Pine Ridge, Rosebud and other reservations across America. I know for a fact of Tony's feelings about fellow Indians, no matter where they live, and he has chosen to keep his "walk" close to his heart. But now all of a sudden guitar picks are a main point of focus for debate! Give me a break! Forget sending aid over seas... look to the West and make a gesture of TRUE American faith. Believe me, Tony would be honored. Plus, he's gonna keep using the same picks he does, so get over it... One more thing... if wondering how I know how Tony feels, do the unthinkable... ask him! Ask him how Richie Plass knows how he feels... he may tell you and he may not. Bottom line... Tony's the real deal.

this is to Edo...Church street blues was written by Norman Blake. This song was published in October's 1999 ACOUSTIC GUITAR magazine with the lyrics. Unless yer talkin the whole album...then, well, good luck.

take 100 million people using tortoise shell picks and you may see a problem. Take ONE Tony Rice using a tortoise shell pick and I hear greatness. I've never used tortoise either, never had the chance to, but the clayton ultem pick works for me just fine. But I'd never refuse a tortoise shell pick if given to me. Jam on.

Just to put my 2 cents in about Tortoise Shell picks. Thes enviromentalist have to gripe about something. I know that the Hawksbill Sea Turtle population is just fine. It was the same way with elephants and the ivory issue a few years back. In africa they have OVER population of Elephants that have to be culled out. So give the "Save the Sea Turtles" issue a rest. People are getting tired of this save this save that crap. John Cruise

Saw Tony with Peter Rowan at the Birchmere. What a great show! Tony was playing some extremely beautiful and subtle rhythmn backup in addition to the usual pyrotechnics. He was also dressed in a world-class suit and looked absolutely marvelous.

MISTER RICE can pick his guitar with my very own teeth if that is what he wants to do! Who in their right mind would care about his using a turtle? If he wants me to, I will search the woods for naturally expired shells and shape the picks with my brare hands 24 hours a day! By the way Tony, I have found a thick, medium sharp agate pick to be my favorite, but I never had the chance to try turtle. I ate some soup once, it was great, so were the steaks in Key West. I think with all the shells that must be available, we could spare you a few guitar picks! And if Turtles could hear you play, I think they would gladly give you a piece of their shell! I know I would! Let's start a Turtle Ranch! For real, I hope most people care about animal rights and realize there is a practicle side to the issue. We should be equally concerned for the rarity of Tony Rices! Cheers again MISTER GUITAR!

Wow Tony! Great to see you have a website now! I saw you so many times with Grisman in the SF Bay area and after, you have just been the most inspiring guitarist. I shook your hand at Pete Douglas's Beach House in Half Moon Bay and told you that you were the best ever, Man was I right! Thank you for SO MUCH! I am hoping to see you at Bumbershoot in Seattle this year, it has been way too long. Keep picking that thing forever! PS..... do you ever plan to reunite with Grisman? I sure love those early albums, never gets old. And I still strain to copy even a few of your awesome licks. Be good and prosper, your fan always, Frank Charles.

__Way to go, Josh. You tell it like it is. The last time I went to the Knoxville Zoo with my grandson Josh, we saw, and I photographed, a huge turtle the sign said had lived to be 400 or 4000. Some folks "gripe" because it's the only "life" they know. And there are those who are not happy unless they are unhappy about whales, owls, and every other 'triflin' little ole thing...when they don't even know where their own kids are, know their neighbors, or care about the fact that we live in the most wonderful country in the world. If fewer people stopped "griping" about "picks" and made it their "aim to live quietly and mind their own business," we would still have the Pentagon, undamaged. We would still have all those lives lost in Manhattan, our Twin Towers. There would be no need to be out in the middle of the street in the middle of the night "burning candles," for NASA to photograph, for 'us' in the "US" to feel 'united. ' Just don't you listen to 'em, Tony. You'd sound great if you cut a pick out of plastic 'milk jug,' the way I used to do for Josh. As my ole friend Andy McKown of the Outdoor Plumbers always says, Tony, you just keep hangin' in there like a "hair on a cheeseburger," and think about the next RRH&P recording session due December 2002. ______________________________ This ad is brought to you by kind folks who manufacture "duct tape," who say, "if you can't say something nice, use our product to tape your mouth shut all the way 'round your head." ______________________________

Even if it's true that most of the Tortoise picks are made from old antique Tortoise objects, please consider that using these picks perpetuates this illegal activity. Also please consider how much of the original Tortoise shell was stripped from live animals.

Tony does use Genuine Tortoise Picks. I hope we dont get into a heated discussion whether it is ethical to use real tortoise or plastic. As far as I know, most of the Tortoise picks that are being sold around some of the bluegrass festivals are made by people who find old Tortoise Bracelets and Combs and so forth. If thats the case then I dont see anything wrong with it. Let me ask You something MR Golden, Everytime You go to KFC or Mcdonalds and chow down on a piece of finger licking good chicken or a big mac, do You ever think of how many poor ol Cows or Chickens are being slaughtered? Thats what I thought. Sincerely, John Burrows

I just discovered Mr. Rice's music and purchased the "Unit of Measure" CD, which is absolutely awesome. So I have become very interested in Mr. Rice and read a number of artticles. One thing that disturbs me however, is reading that Mr. Rice uses genuine tortoiseshell picks. I would sincerely hope that, if this is true, Mr. Rice consider his enormous influence and the ethical issues (animal cruelty) involved.

One more thing. I read an interview with you somewhere where you said that after you found your guitar back in '75 or so that you took it to Randy Wood. Is that the same Randy Wood who now lives in Savannah? Just wonderin' cause he used to do some work for one of my friends back in the early 80's when I still lived in that area. Take Care!

I have been playing guitar for 32 of my 42 years of life, dabbled in Bluegrass a little in the 70's, did the Rock N' Roll thing and then became a recording engineer. In just the last year I've fell in love with Bluegrass again. I play about 3 hours a day and I am excited about music again. For that I must offer you a heartfelt thanks. Music, or at least good music should come from the soul, and it is evident to me from your music and the attention you give to your fans on this website that you are indeed a good soul. God Bless You and your family! Hope to see you here in Georgia soon. Drop me an email if you'd like to visit our studio, we'd be glad to see you. Tony, I am a long time fan, and picker, I love trying to learn your stuff it is such a huge challenge, sometimes an impossible one. Anyway I heard you and the Dawg, Peter Rowan, and Sam Bush might be playing some shows with Dark Star Orchestra. Is this true? If it is I personally cant wait. I love the Dead and Jerry Garcia and Dark Star Orchestra, but I also love you and David Grisman and JD Crowe and so on. So to me if you guys are playing with them it would probably end up being the best show I've ever seen. In fact I know it would especially if you jammed with the guy from Dark Star. I study all kinds of music but you and Jerry garcia are by far, my two biggest influences. Anyway it would be great so please let me know. My e-mail is oms6@cs.com Thanks for all the great music and inspiration, and evan though I've never met ya Happy late birthday Sincerly Joshua Smith

Tony: You have been a great inspiration to me. My sister sent me a couple of your tapes back in 1989. I am a Mountain Man, Fisherman, and VP of the Sierra Muzzle Loaders and Newsletter. I was out in the middle of the lake in 1990 listening to "Manzanita," and you know how sound travels over water? Before I knew it, there were a half-dozen other boats with guys all around asking, "Man! Who is that? What is that?" Before long I had a whole new bunch of friends. We have been picking and jamming for 12 years now because of you and ole "GS Sullivan." If you ever get to California, come pick with us. Dear Tony^^^^and^^^^ Pamela: I have the new Saturday, July 20, 2002, RRH&P scheduled appearance up on the new MSN Community for The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in the beautiful Bershire Mountains of New York. I have posted all the Press-related links, acts, showtimes, and photos. I know everyone will be excited to see RRH&P Live and Onstage, especially in such an awe-inspiring setting. This was one of John Hartford's favorite places to perform. The toll-free number to call for information is 1-888-948-8495. Tickets may be ordered for July 18-21 or for one day only. Order with a Credit Card or send a check or money order to: Grey Fox Office, P.O. Box 535, Uticah, NY 13503. For questions about the festival email grayfoxoffice@aol.com or burdette@endor.com ~ Some of the other acts include your buddies Sam Bush, The Lonesome River Band, etc. The Website address for more information is http://www.greyfoxfestival.com~ I have closed several Websites to devote all of my time to the new RRH&P Website, where no one will be refused free membership for updated daily information for Bluegrass News. We also have "Doc" Roberts back with us from iBluegrass.com and Derek Halsey from Gritz.net and Gritz Magazine. Pages and pages of interesting links you won't find on any other site on the 'net' especially 'geared' for flatpickers and mandolin players. Derek is working on Women In Bluegrass and we hope to add Ms. Katie Laur soon. Everything looks great and I hope eveyone will stop by http://communities.msn.com/RiceRiceHillmanPedersen ~ I also think you should give Derek and I a link to your Website. I tried closing the old RRH&P site, but received so many letters and emails begging me to think about reopening it that everyone has offered to help. I even have my "competition" helping me. (ROTFL)I am a 30-year Veteran Bluegrass Photojournalist who has just been appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for my writing and photography by Governor Paul Patton as a Kentucky Colonel, plus I'll be working on the HWY 23 Country Music Project as a Board Member of the Kentucky Highlands Museum in Ashland, Kentucky, beginning July 10. I have advertised the Rice name on everything that is associated with Bluegrass Music, including TV, radio, newpapers, national and international Bluegrass Magazines, curently have linked RRH&P, Rice Brothers, Bluegrass Album Band, Tony Rice, Larry Rice, Wyatt Rice, Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen to every site I have created since 1998. I am proud to be associated with RRH&P and I hope you and Pamela and your Webmaster will consider RRH&P as an Official Link to the WWW on this page. Gentle On My Mind by John Hartford It's knowing that your door is always open and your path is free to walk, That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag rolled up and stashed behind your couch. And it's knowing I'm not shackled by forgotten words and bonds and the ink stains that have dried upon some line, That keeps you in the back roads by the rivers of memory, that keeps you ever gentle on my mind. It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy planted on their columns now that bind me, Or something that somebody said because they thought we fit together walkin'. It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find That you're moving on the back roads by the rivers of my memory and for hours you're just gentle on my mind. Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines and the junkyards and the highways come between us, And some other woman's crying to her mother 'cause she turned and I was gone. I still might run in silence, tears of joy might stain my face and summer sun might burn me till I'm blind, But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the back roads, by the rivers flowing gentle on my mind. I dip my cup of soup back from the gurglin', crackling cauldron in some train yard; My beard a roughn'ning coal pile and a dirty hat pulled low across my face; Through cupped hands 'round a tin can, I pretend I hold you to my breast and find, That you're wavin' from the back roads by the rivers of my memory ever smilin', ever gentle on my mind.

John Hartford,Gone Clear. Howdy folks.Greetings Tony. We are coming up on the first anniversary of the passing of John Hartford. While I did not know him as well as a bunch of folk out there, I was lucky enough to be able to spend some interesting and fun time with the man. He was an innovator, made a difference in bluegrass and new acoustic music,(remember that "Steam-Powered Aereo-Plain came out in 1971 and was way ahead of it's time), and I knew him from both his music side and his riverboat Captain side. I have, in recent times, gotten to know friends of his from both of those sides of his life. From katie Laur to Cap Don Sanders. And it is no secret to Earl Scruggs fans that Earl and Louise were very good friends of John. If you have seen the "Down From The Mountain" concert video, and it is hard to believe that it was recorded over two years ago, you will see one of the last performances of John. If his solo fiddle take on 'Man of constant Sorrow", that he plays as Alison and the choir walk off behind him, doesn't get to you than I don't know what to say. It is simply beautiful. And it was so cool to see Jerry Douglas dedicate his new CD "Lookout For Hope" to John and Marie Hartford. Very Cool.! The first article that I had published at GRITZ magazine was about John. Because of his influence on my strange thinking , and because all of what has happened to me since can be traced back to that article on John, I have offered his article for free to anyone in the world that wants to print it. As a result it has been published in the British Bluegrass News magazine in England, as well as in Australia, and others. I also printed out copies of it and have hand delivered it to those that knew John. From Jerry Douglas to The Whites to JD Crowe to Ricky Skaggs, Katie Laur and many others. The response has been unreal. But John is the reason for it. He was just an interesting and innovative dude. We in Cincinnati are working on a John Hartford Tribute for the ,once every 5 years, Tall Stacks Steamboat Festival in 2003 here in Cincinnati that John was a big part of since the first one in 1988. Tall Stacks was a perfect combination for him of music and riverboats. In the mean time the Hartford article can be found online at; http://www.gritz.net/FTRjhartford.html. It is in the features section at www.gritz.net. If you were a Hartford fan in any way take a minute to drop a line at his message board at www.johnhartford.com. That board, with over 2000 posts on it, has many great stories about him for those of you out there that are not all that familiar with John Hartford. He passed a year ago on June 4th. Thanks to David Schenk for his help with that original Hartford article at GRITZ. Derek Halsey

Tony, I have been a Tony Rice fan since I was 12 years old. 20+ years later, I still listen to Manzanita like it was just released. I'm still amazed with the "tone from the bone". It's not all the guitar guys - it's the hands behind the box. I just wanted to say thanks for giving us guitar players a goal that can never be reached. When are you coming back to Knoxville to perform? It would be great to hear some Rice from the TN Theatre!!

Tony, Thank you for beung such a huge inspiration to me and many others. Somtimes it is so hard to evan attempt to try to play like you. Learning to play one of your songs always opens a whole new musical door to me. Two of my most favforite cds to TRY to play along with are backwaters and the pizza tapes. The way you and Jerry Garcia played together on the guitar jam was so amazing. I was wondering if there is a possibility that you might be putting out anymore jazz type cds? Any cd of yours is awesome I hope your still putting out cds 40 years from now. Thanks again for all the music and for being such a big influence. Sincerly Joshua Smith. oms6@compuserve.com

Yep, GRITZ , the print issue, is coming out next week with Dickey Betts on the cover. Won't get into all that here. There is a review of mine of Tony's Rice, Rice, Hillman, and Pedersen "Running Wild" CD in the "sound and Vision" section, "New CD Reviews"area. Scroll way down as it has been up a while. A review of Tony in concert will be in the print edition. I also focus on up and coming bands like The Iratowns, and Schfvilkus, Jubal Foster,Audie Blaylock and Ricky Simpkins new solo CD on Doobie Shea. Tony is sounding better than ever, that I do know.See him when he comes to town!. Thanks John, Derek

I just wanted to take this time to say again how important Tony is to me. Without him I don't think I could it. He helps glue my life together with his music and personailty. I just appreciate the fans who feel the same way. It means so much to Tony. Hey, The Fan Club is coming soon! Get ready cause it's gonna rock. I think Kathi, Steve, Pam, Tony, Christian and Drew have all done tremendous work in getting Tony's name even better known over the last few years. We all owe them a huge "thank you." Tony, I got your new instructional DVD and really enjoyed it. I have your instructional book, too. Great stuff. While I can't resist copping some of your riffs, and get a kick out of playing some of your classics, like "Blue Railroad Train", what I really appreciate, and the reason I am writing this, is to say how much I appreciate your consistent encouragement and advice for players to be themselves, do what they like, do what makes them happy, listen to the music within yourself, etc. You never fail to get that point across, and I for one really take it to heart. I have applied what I have learned from you and Steve Kaufman and Norman Blake and Dan Crary and come up with my own way of playing the fiddle tunes, and some of my own arrangements of songs as diverse as "Moon River" and "Ode to Joy." You are a tremendous inspiration to me, and I wanted you to know you have a big impact not just on clones, but on players who follow their own inclinations. Come up here to NJ soon, Tony. Hell, I'll settle for Pennsylvania! Good luck, and thanks for the music.

Hello to all that read the guestbook. I've been listening to the Tony Rice Unit recordings "Devlin, Backwaters, and Acoutics." I was wondering there would ever be a chance to see one those bands live in concert. The music was great just like his other stuff, but I really love the jazz stuff. Mrs. Rice, do you or Mr. Rice know the name of the album that has (among other songs) Freeborn Man, some instrumental tune with a Beatles tune, and well, I can't rightly remember the others. It was done in the early years I guess. I had a tape of it and want to purchase a C.D. version if it is still in print. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. Hello Tony, Pamela, and Family... Killer website... When I was 15, (I'm 25 now) my Father played a Doc Watson tape for me. I instantly wanted to learn how to flat-pick a guitar. A few months later my Uncle was listening to one of your albums and I decided then and there that I had to learn some of that "powerful stuff"... I'll have to say that one of the biggest problems I have, is trying to keep from copying your sound and your licks... When I run through a tune that I've heard you play and I change some things around, I feel like I'm taking alot more "good" out of the music than I'm adding... I guess it just goes to show that some things were made right the first time and your music is no exception... You are certainly my #1 guitar influence. When I hear other guitarists who play much better than me, I get just a little jealous... But when I hear you play, I just get a big proud smile and realize how far the road of improvement is paved ahead of me... I've got one technical question... About your action on the "Bone", What is the measured height between the bottom side of the big and little "E" strings and the frets at the 1st and 12th fret? I know they are low but I've always been curious of the actual height. I would truly be appreciative if you could answer that for me...Thanks!

"Injury Report"- Two days ago I received my copy of the June 2002 issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine. As I walked back from the mailbox I saw a small banner headline on the front cover that read "Bluegrass Superhero Tony Rice". Got so excited I tripped and fell on the sidewalk and skinned my elbow. The article is well-written and Mr. Rice is extremely forthcoming about his own music, his influences and thoughts on music in general- his and the work of others. Mr. Rice proves once again that he is someone who considers himself fortunate enough to have a special talent and never once comes across as a demi-god. Now if he'd just publish some of his photography I'd be content.

Hi Tony!, I have been operating for the last 22 years thinking that I was your NO.1 FAN- after reading the nice letters on this site to you- i might have to adjust my thinking!! But I would guess i am still fairly high on the list! My frist visit to your site- cool! I live and work at a small radar site about 80 miles south of Fairbanks. your CDs help alot when its middle winter and no sun! back in 86- the Squires were here on a USO tour. We took them all on a dog sled ride, got em a steak dinner at the local pub- just had a big ol time for a couple of days! I have not kept in touch with them for the last few years- if you see rick & ronnie, tell em Mark said Hi! Its all been said a Thousand times before but I should put in my two cents worth- Your playing is just unreal. I cant begin to tell ya how much it just gets inside my head- I will just leave it at that. If you ever get the urge- come on up! I would almost bet we could find a fish for ya to hook! M.C. Mr. Rice, Just found this site. Been a big fan of your's since first hearing the DGQ album while on a climbing trip to Yosemite in early 77. Saw you for the first time at Wintergrass in 01. I'm flying to NC tomorrow for Merlefest for the first time, largely because you're going to be there. I've followed a lot of guitar player's music over the years, Pass, Di Meola, Mclaughlin, Metheny. Your playing inspires me like no one I've heard and motivates me to practice at the expense of a normal, balanced life! Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing you, hope you come to Vancouver some day. With sincere regards from the North. Perry phigh2uniserve.com

FINALLY! How come I could never find this site before? Seems like it was "under construction"...oh well, nevertheless, I am thrilled to be here. Mr. Rice, you are a true virtuoso. Your playing is both inspired & inspiring. I came to your music only six or seven years ago, but have been doing my best to catch up since then. Ironically, my brother tried to introduce your music to me about 25 yrs ago, but at the time, I just didn't have the ears and/or heart to listen & comprehend. I wish that I had. Now 45, I have come full circle, and your music, along with Clarence White, David Grier, Doc Watson, et al is at the top of my list. Not a day goes by that I do not listen to you, and in my own feeble way, try to emulate your touch, timing, tone, timbre, etc.. Thanks for all the great pickin'! Do some more!!!

Folks, I write for GRITZ magazine, the new kid on the block, and I am the bluegrass/new-acoustic connection for the magazine. Below I am sending out a preview of my review of a recent Tony Rice, Ralph Stanley concert. I was limited to so many words so please keep that in mind. Before I get to that, go to www.gritz.net, and then to the "sound and Vision' page, to read my review of Rice, Rice, Hillman, and Pedersen, "Running Wild". scroll way down in the 'new CD review 'section. I have heard from everyone, Chris, Herb, and Larry, and soon look forward to talking with Tony. And, my interview with Doc Watson collaborater, David Holt is there on the front page talking about the 'cat skin banjo' and the 'elephant hanged for murder in 1916'. Here is the sneal preview of the concert review in our upcoming first ever print edition. Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys Tony Rice with the Lonesome River Band Paramount Theater, Ashland Kentucky, March 7th,2002 Less than a week from winning Grammys for the song 'O Death', and the Album of the Year, the 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' soundtrack, Dr. Ralph Stanley was out front in the lobby of the Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Kentucky meeting and greeting the folks that came to see him play. He was as accessible as any living legend could hope to be. The Paramount Arts Center was a wonderful venue to see these great musicians. It is a beautiful theater built in 1931 with the original art-deco murals restored. The show was part of Michael Johnathon's Troubadour Concert Series and also featured Tony Rice with the Lonesome River Band Do you fancy yourself a guitar player? Go see Tony Rice play and afterwards tell me where you stand. The man is incredible. After a series of upbeat, smoking bluegrass tunes played with the Lonesome River Band, they took a break and left Tony on stage to play by himself. Tony played the recognizable and haunting song, "Shenandoah". It is a familiar and beautiful melody and Tony Rice explored every way he could of giving the song new life, of giving a full and expansive sound to it, using every inch of the fret board. It was simply outstanding. The Clinch Mountain Boys came out before Dr. Ralph and got it going first. Ralph's son, Ralph Stanley II, is a young man who handles himself well and leads the band effectively. The Clinch Mountain Boys are a top-notch outfit. The longest tenure of the bunch is slap bassist Jack Cooke who has been with them for over thirty years and is quite the character. On mandolin is John Rigsby, and Steve Sparkman plays a bright and impressive banjo. James Price is a heck of a fiddle player that also does a turn with some quick impressions. The funniest is the one he does of his boss, imitating Ralph's signature, "'preciate Ya", with a couple of whistles thrown in. James Alan Shelton is a very good bluegrass guitarist and Dr. Ralph speaks highly of his playing and rightly so. After the band showcased each member, one by one, it was time for Dr. Ralph to come on out. He started off his portion of the concert by going right into "Man of Constant Sorrow", the big hit from the 'O Brother' CD that Ralph first recorded with his brothe,r Carter Stanley, back in the 1960's. What is old is new again. Dr. Ralph did some fine bluegrass and some fine old time gospel too. "A Robin Built A Nest On Daddy's Grave" was a great old mountain style gospel tune that rolled right along. "Girl From The Greenbriar Shore" was another old time mountain music standout. Dr. Ralph's accapella rendition of "O Death" sounded as good if not better than from the O Brother soundtrack. And yes, during one song Dr. Ralph did pick up the banjo. It was a real treat to hear Dr. Ralph remind everybody how powerful the old time 'clawhammer style' banjo picking could be. Dr. Ralph threw down some powerful and aggressive riffs. The crowd loved it. When Dr.
