Hey folks... just thought I'd pass this along... called the Paramount Theater for tickets to the Jan. 18th show... they said it was cancelled. Anyone know if this is really true or just a mistake? Guess we'll have to wait a while longer!

Tony, you all did it again last night! The Birchmere audience was treated to what Sammy Shelor called a rehersal, but the enjoyment you all were obviously having on stage spilled over into the seats. It was great to see you having a good time on stage and the music was great! I thought I would miss the Spacegrass, but the straight-ahead bluegrass sets you tore through last night were wonderful, to be sure. I hope you have a safe and happy New Year, and keep playing that flat-top box! Andy

Folks, I've been listening to Clarence White's 33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumental Solos and the Bluegrass Album Band's Instrumentals (volume 6). I have to say, if you want to hear it like Clarence used to do it, listen to Monroe's Hornpipe on the BAB vol. 6. It's a perfect, PERFECT Clarence White intro. Clarence lives on and Tony shines! I'm so glad Tony decided not to take a break on Ground Speed. Then I would have had to sell my guitar and start all over from scratch. I'd love to hear a Tony Ground Speed some day though! Any MP3's of a live version?

Hi there, Just wanted to give everyone an update on the benefit we have scehduled for our friend Louie Webster up here in Wisconsin. As I had posted last week, Tony is going to be donating some material for the silent auction, and we just got in our first two packages today. We got five autographed pictures and a CD from Branscombe Richmond (he played Bobby Sixkiller on the TV series Renegade) and three autographed CD's from Storm Seymour from Tama, Iowa. As I had said last week, I'm just trying to keep everyone up to date on the items we will have for the silent auction. I still don't know for sure, but I am still working with the tribe to get on-line service for the night of the event. Thank you kindly, Richie Plass

Pamela and Tony. Just heard that you suffered the loss of your grandfather C. R. Sudreth Christmas morning. He was a fellow Mason and distingushed Business man. A family loss at anytime is hard but I am truely heartbroken to know that it happened on Christmas morning. I will pay my respects tomorrow night. My sympathy as well to Jewell. He was blessed to have you three in his life. Most Sincere, G. Morgan

Gerry, thanks for the praises; but, once again, I'd like to point out that the Marks of MagicBus.Com are the ones who maintain the website. I feel they are the ones you need to thank. I have plenty other tasks to take care of! For those of you questioning the Birchmere venue on Monday, during a discussion with Tony last night he said that Dan Tyminski is not available at this time and that the Unit will consist, thus far, of Sammy Shelor and Jeff Parker of Lonesome River Band as well as Rickie and Ronnie Simpkins. If I hear of any changes, I'll let you know.

Question for Mr&Mrs Rice: In Photo Gallery #3, where and when was the last photo taken. It's got every good newgrass musician in it. Bush, Bela, Flux, Dawg, Vassar, Mike Marshall, Tony, Darol Anger...everybody. Was there a record these guys were all on together? I can't think of one unless it was the David Grisman Rounder Album.... Inquiring minds want to know. As an aside, it's a good darn thing nothing tragic happened wherever that was, because the best 3 mando players alive were all right there together! Merry Christmas, Will C.

Hi Tony, I cant get enough of your pickin. My name is Nathan Harderson and I am Francis Harderson's nephew. I dont know if you would remember my uncle, but he remembers meeting you at the guitarist of the year awards, sometime back in the later 70's i think he said. Anyway, just once i would like to meet you and just sit down and do some good pickin with ya. Of course you would make me look stupid on the guitar, but thats ok, I would get a kick out of just playing some good strong rhythm for you to eat that neck up. Well Im sure you probably wont even read this, but if you do, try to send me an email if ya have time, I have a couple of questions to ask you. Later bud, Nathan Harderson

Greetings one and all, We are trying to see if we can get on-line service the night of the benifit for our Brother, Louie Webster. This would make it easier for people to bid on-line for Tony's items and also many other great items that will be available. But, in case the tribe is unable to get this hook up for us, I'm sorry to say that the only way to bid will to be in attendance. The show is scheduled for Thursday, January 16th at the Norbert Hill Center Theater located in Oneida, WI., which is right west of Green Bay. I will kepp everyone updated as to the status of the on-line hook up, but in the mean time if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I'd like to take this time to thank Tony and Pam for jumping on our band wagon to help us with this great cause. Louie is a master flute maker, songwriter, musician and performer. Having Tony involved adds a level of care and assitance that Indian people are fully aware of. My heart goes out to them for their kindness and commitment to our cause. Thank you all and Merry Christmas, Richie

I am setting up a website that will feature exclusive TR tabs. I have tabbed all the solos myself and will try to feature solos that haven't ever been tabbed before, at least commercially. It would be great if Tony could take a look, or maybe Pam can set me straight on some solos. ;) I'm sure she can pick too. The site is, (shameless plug), http://home.columbus.rr.com/corn55/Rice.html And about the mics. I have owned KM86, Km85, Km84, U87, and they are fabulous setups. Right now I am using the U89. Does Tony ever use the U89 for anything? The two KM86's I had were unbelievably sensitive, probably the best mics around for acoustic guitar. Anyway thanks.

Zville, OH - Friday, December 20, 2002 at 18:29:19 (GMT)
Wes, I'm just another fan, but let me hazard a guess about the pick. I imagine it would be about 1mm or more in thickness, made of tortoise shell. Maybe Pam can get you a definitive comment from The Man! Also, about the microphone setup, Tony says in his DVD lessons that he sets one up over the fingerboard, pointing at 45 degrees back into that big soundhole, then another one farther back from the guitar, in front of the body. I'm a poor substitute for Pam & Tony, but maybe they can post some more pointers. I forget what kind of mics he uses to record, but there's a comment on here somewhere, way on down, about the kind he uses in performance.

I was talking to a friend of mine from British Colombia, Canada. We were talking bluegrass and such music related topics. Considering that he has been to alot of the bluegrass festivals in the United States, I asked him if he had ever heard Tony Rice playing live somewhere. His response was "yes I sure have". He said and I quote "he is the only man Ive ever heard who can stand on a stage, just him and his guitar, and bring four thousand people to tears".

The midrange coming out of your d28 (assuming it is the d28!) on recordings like fiddler's dram/whiskey before breakfast, and texas gales is so well balanced. I wondered if you would share what your mic setup was like for that recording. I know that there are multiple factors at work with getting that sound and all, but i am doing some home recording and it would give me a real boost if i had even some knowlege of a great mic setup to compare with my own. thank you and god bless to you and Pamela.

Tony, Just wanted to let you know that we were at the State Theater show last week, but the sound was so bad where we were sitting that we couldn't hear anything but mud. Then a bunch of people came and stood in front of us and we couldn't see you either. Never thought I would leave half-way through one of your concerts, but we high-tailed it home at the intermission. (It was a real treat getting to see Vassar live for the first time. That guy is incredible!) All our love to you, Pam, I., and B. and hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. Jesus was the greatest gift of all, but in my book, your music is a close second. Thanks for everything!

...........Oh the "MYSTERY MAN IN THE PORTRAIT". After extensive research on this man by Tony. He selected his favorite black and white photograph of him and asked me to do an oil painting of him in color. I did the portrait in 1988 with Tony directing every stroke of my brush. Tony and I sat night and day for 2 weeks, from start to completion. His idenity can be discovered, by revisiting the tunes Tony recorded, on men in history. Tony has 3 published photos with this portrait. ( It is GINSING SULLIVAN)<><><><<<<>>>><><><> Good Luck, Pamela

I'll tell you what... speaking of Shenandoah. No contest, that is simply the most beautiful piece of music I think I've ever heard. I struggled day after day just to try and learn a *little* of that song. Over a year of trying to play it, I think I've come *close*, but no matter how long I play it, I'll never be able to play it like Tony. Everyone puts his or her signature on a song and I say without hesitation that I think Tony has made that song his own without any equal. Now, I play a medley of Shenandoah/Danny Boy at every single show I do.

Tony, this next compliment really belongs to you since it is your song-- I guess I just kinda accepted it on your behalf-- I played it during a Sunday Morning service once. After the service, an elderly lady came up to me and with tears in her eyes hugged me. She said she wished I could have played Danny Boy like that at her husband's funeral because he would have loved it and that the way I played it made it sound like of the most beautiful melodies she'd ever heard. So, I took that as the highest compliment I'd ever been paid. Anyways, I just thought I'd share that your versions of Shenandoah and Danny Boy mean so much to so many people, me included. So, thank you.

Oh, I almost forgot. Tony brought THE D-28 outta the vault. What an honor it was to hear him play that old box. He apologized for having to tune it so often while on stage and at one point held his Boliva Accutron watch to his ear to compare the the tuning. Pretty neat to those who know that that watch keeps it's time with an internal tuning fork. Thanx again for an unforgettable night!!

I gotta comment about the December 14th show at Columbia, SC. That was the hottest show I've ever been to!!! It featured Tony, Ronnie and Ricky Simpkins, Shawn Lane and Rob Ickes. They did several tunes Tony recorded like Cold on the Shoulder and On My Way Back to the Old Home. An absolutely scalding version of I am a Pilgrim with some of the best impromptu breaks I've ever heard outta Tony. Then everyone left the stage and Tony and Rob Ickes did an instrumental of The Last Thing on My Mind that was as good as I've ever heard it. Also at one point, Ricky and Tony did Shenandoah. Let me tell ya, it coulda brought a tear to a glass eye. I could go on and on but I'll finish with these comments. It appeared to my front row vantage point that Tony really enjoyed himself. I think he really got off listening to Rob Ickes. Tony would ask Rob if he wanted a break during a song because he knew they hadn't actually practiced that one together and would smile and laugh as Rob would pull out a great break. He was laughing, smiling, joking, and was VERY personable with the boys onstage as well as the audience and at one point, after the emotional standing ovation for Shenandoah, spoke from the heart and explained that if it wasn't for us (the fans) they wouldn't do this kind of thing. He hoped everyone had been able to "lose their worries" in the nights music. The 400 seat capacity of the Belk Auditorium was about 3/4 full and one would think it would discourage the musicians but that was definately not the case. Tony was at the top of his game that night and if I never get to see the man again I'll NEVER forget the way he played 9 Pound Hammer. If John Henry had had Tony to help him keep time, he'd have finished that tunnel in half the time!!! Thanks Tony!!!!

Wow! Tony used the D-28? Cool!!! I know he's more than a little careful with that guitar, and rightfully so! I wish I could have gone to the show-- I really feel like I missed out on something great!

On a different note, I had hoped to post another list of guesses as to the Ovation songs, but the past few days have been VERY rough for me-- I've had two of my best friends from years ago stop talking to me for no reason whatsoever. The only thing that's made me feel any better is keeping the Crossings album in the CD player. I don't care if it's the Cruz, the Martin or the Ovation-- that album is a fine piece of work. I sure would like to see it re-released someday, if possible.

Good joke about the D-28 trade... although, I have *serious* doubts about Tony's willingness to part with that instrument. Hahaha...

Hi to Kathi and thank you for writing. If I'm understanding - Tony doesn't necessarily do a whole tour as a block, but instead schedules dates a la carte - which is fine. I'll just be sure to read here often and keep up to date on what's ahead. Might be fun to plan a trip that way anyway - be a little spontaneous. At any rate - my husband and I are really looking forward to the chance to see him play live. Such a fine musician. Oh a note to Carolyn Wright in an earlier thread. I read the articles you linked and they were great. A really good read and nice pictures too. Mr. and Mrs. Rice make a handsome couple. Thanks for the info.

Pamela- When in the heck is Tony gonna come to the northeast again? We'd sure like to see him some more up here. He always sounds great in the Troy Music Hall. Also, i think i saw on Caroline Wright's website that Tony paid only $550 for the D-28, same that I paid for my Martin D-25. Please tell him if he's interested I'd consider an even trade since both instruments are valued the same. Thanks...Pat

I just wanted to thank Tony and the rest of the boys for such a great show Saturday night. That was my first live experience with Tony and my expectations were high, needless to say I wasn't let down. I was able to catch the DGQ in Charleston a month or so back, now my live music experiences are complete! I'm sure I speak for everyone at the show when I say "Come back real soon!"

Hello Rices... On the songs and tunes done with the Ovation, what about the green Tony Rice/Rattlesnake album (my all-time favorite for several years after it came out)? Temperance Reel? Banks of the Ohio? Farewell Blues? I have heard Manzanita recently, but the green one I only have on vinyl, so I can hardly remember how those breaks sounded. I do remember that the guitar had a certain different timbre, especially on Farewell Blues, and I remember the clear, distinctive guitar sound on those other tracks. Also, that record is right in the 1970's time frame.

Freesia, The Tony Rice Unit is scheduled to play at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia on the 30th of December. I will need to check with Keith Case's office and/or Birchmere to confirm the time. I am checking on additional dates. We are attempting to work out a system in order to keep the fans reasonably informed but I can tell you it is not as simple as it would seem. Sometimes (or much of the time), communication in this business is discouragingly vague. I encourage fans to e-mail me at kfox@tonyrice.com to inform me if you hear of any shows in your area which are not posted to the site; then I can investigate the issue further and inform the fans with details.

Hi folks. I introduced my husband to Tony's music and the other day he made me very happy by announcing out of the blue that he thought we should really try to see him play in concert this year....I was hoping you might give me some feedback as to venues/festivals you've attended (I don't know if he plays the same places from year to year)and that you recommend especially - good sound, good seating, he seemed to be as happy to be there as you were, etc....think North East. Or maybe down in NC where I could work a trip around a visit to my friend (also turned her into a Rice fan - wasn't hard). Maybe somewhere in the Kentucky/Tennessee/Ohio region and could work a visit with my family around it. We could have a good time when we get together for a change. ha ha ha. Just kidding...sorta. :-) Anyway, any feedback you could give would be welcome as I'll have to plan in advance. Many thanks.

Can you tell us if Tony´s Ovation guitar is the same sunburst Legend model that he apeared with in those old Ovation adds? And I can understand why he is careful with taking out the old D-28 but can you tell us what do you mean about the recent events regarding the Martin? was it in danger of being stolen or something? Tony I love your playing and can you tell me, would you ever do another album like Acoustics, Mar West, Still inside or Backwaters of just instrumental Spacegrass without any bluegrass? Thank you so much and Merry Xmas.

......John of Ashville, the man in the photo with Tony and Wyattm is the late Alvin Coffee of Powatan Va. He was like a second dad to the brothers. Blind for 5 years he regained his sight before his death. Alvin would gather scrap bicycles all year. Put them back together like new with fresh paint. He made sure the less fortunate children in Virginia had bikes on Christmas Morning. He was a wonderful role model for the Rice and Simpkins Brothers. He was a devout fan of bluegrass music. He always cried when Ricky and Tony played MAIDENS PRAYER. He never told us why..... Today if you see any of us cry when Ricky Simpkins plays MAIDENS PRAYER, you will know we are remembering Alvin.

Hahaha! Well, I didn't get any of the Ovation cuts right, but at least I got 2 right! Hahaha... Why do I feel like I just got the extra credit right? hahaha... Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Rice! I'm gonna try and listen again tonight and see what I get tomorrow.

Also, is it me, or after all the discussion here about how great these guitars sound, can anyone else forsee the doubling of the price of Ovation guitars on E-bay for those of us looking for one? Hahaha!!!!

I have to agree about that commment regarding the 15 dollar Harmony guitar... in the hands of someone who's instrument is not simply a "tool" for an occupation but an extention of themselves, someone can make almost any instrument sound like a million dollars. For instance, a while back I looked for one of those "Le Domino" guitars like Tony played on the Tone Poems record because I liked the sound of it and just out of curiosity. Would you belive me if I said that guitar went for a VERY pretty penny for what it was??? I don't know the exact price it sold for, but I checked it with several days remaining in the auction and it was up over 300 dollars! Of course, for all those wondering, the auction is long over... this was months ago.

Ok. So far, here's what I've got. We have a CD player at work and the first CD I grabbed this morning when I left was Acoustics. After listening and re-listening (when the boss wasn't looking... hahaha!) and listening once when I got home today, I think I've got a guess. Here we go:
Gasology: the Martin
Blues For Paradise: the Martin
Old Grey Coat: the Santa Cruz
Four On Six: the Ovation
So Much: the Ovation
Swing 51: the Santa Cruz
New Waltz: I am having a hard time here between the Martin and the Ovation, but I'm leaning more towards the Ovation.
Fast Floyd: the Martin

How close did I come??? :o)

Howdy all. Thought I'd mention that an ovation can be a great sounding guitar. I had one, and it too kept sliding out of my lap. It was dubbed "the red peg" since the high E tuning peg broke off and it was replaced by a piece of hard red plastic. Wish I never got rid of it. I think I'll go throw on some ^^^^T^^^^ and dream of the red peg. Later all, and Merry Christmas to Tony, Pam, Kathi, and everyone else that makes this guest board so awesome....Scott

While we all spend sleepless nights wondering which tracks were recorded with the Ovation (no kidding!), it would be very interesting to know what attracts Mr. Rice to the Ovation. That guitar is, after all, not an obvious choice for all bluegrass oriented pickers. I'm wondering if the Ovation was used on some of the tracks on River Suite For Two Guitar...

Thanks Mr and Mrs. Rice! Wow... that is incredible!!! Now I want an Ovation!! :) I'd have never guessed that Manzanita was recorded on a plastic backed guitar! I guess it just goes to show that guitar tone is in the player, not completely nor necessarily in the guitar. However, (this sounds so silly doesn't it-- coming from me!) if you ever decide to part with it.. remember me! Hahahaha!!

Okay... I bite. I'm gonna go back and pull out the vinyl of Manzanita and give this a real close listen. Then, I'll make a guess and see how close I came. :)

Err, the point being (in relation to my previous e-mail) that it seems like the Martin (at least the one with scalloped br.) was built for .13. A friend of mine with a Martin D-18V put on a set of .13, but that didn't work at all; the heavier strings seemed to steal away all the sound, and he is now back on .12.

Manzanita was recorded with an Ovation? Now there's a surprise! I would never have guessed that. I don't think I'm the only one who would like to know what other tunes were recorded with that guitar. Pleeease, TR/Mrs. Rice, tell us more... Question to Mr. TR/everybody: I recently switched from gauge .12 to .13-.56 on my HD 28, and the result was amazing. Both intonation (not surprisingly) and overall tone and volume (a bit more surprising) was greatly improved. Anybody with similar experience? Happy holidays!

I'm certainly looking forward to the next NC show. Maybe I could convince the folks at Campbell University to book Tony for a show?

on a classical note, I always thought a good dawg tune would be Bach's little fugue in G minor (BWV578). Each instrument takes a part. guitar first, then the mandolin on the high register, and then the dobro, and then the bass, etc. It would take quite a bit of concentration from each musician to time it right, but I think it would sound cool. Too bad noone else up here in the "northland" has ever heard of dawg music. Atleast noone plays it live.

lol Poster Child. Awww shucks-you are too nice. :-) That made me take the the foot out of my mouth long enough to smile. Thanks!...........And Scott - the version of Jerusalem Ridge I have is the one from "Church Street Blues" ..but you know I could hear a Mozarty sort of doodle in there - you're right. Wonderful tune. By the way, while you're on a Classical Grass guitar journey, try Bach's Minuet in G (the one the girl pop singers turned into "Lover's Concerto"). I've always wondered if that would take root well in bluegrass. I'd try it myself but sadly discovered that owning a guitar didn't turn me into a guitar player. ;-)

Oh I'm sure you're a smart man Sean. It's me that's about "2 crayons short of a set" lol...... I finally got to the bottom of this today - it was driving me nuts. And it turns out my aunt, in the midst of putting on about 40 Tony tunes to tide me over- threw in a Dan Crary. !! It's from his album "Guitar" - it is indeed Mozart from a piano concerto "Rondo in the Turkish Style" (hereafter known as the "Doodle song"!) and it's Dan Crary going to town on the strings with Bela Fleck, Sam Bush and Mark O'Connor coming along for the ride...having been so thrilled listening to Tony play one wonderful guitar run after the other- and as Dan's piece is in the "dawg" style...I just always thought it was Tony's........ I'm glad if my mistake has gotten Scott now trying Mozart in bluegrass style (blends well - yes?) and thanks to PR and Rp below for their suggestions as well, and to Mrs. Rice for checking with him. Let me see if I can find a way to blush in type...{{blush}} :-) ...meanwhile Tony just came through my speakers singing the words "If You Only Knew The Way That I Feel"...which I find kind of appropriate as I 'fess up here. Making me laugh. Sorry for the mixup folks and thanks for being so helpful. Next time I ask a question I'll try to get my facts straight.

Hi there. Thanks to Freesia, I am now playing mozart in a bluegrass context. Of all the possible notes out there and their note values, and with the millions more people out there creating music....someone somewhere has to duplicate something along the way. But that's what makes music so great. because it can be the same notes and mean a totally different thing. I think that's what draws me to music so much. Endless possibilities all the same. this Mozart piece also sounds like a tune played on the movie Crossroads with Ralph Macchio. Have fun all and keep exploring. Scott P.S. I watched the storm move across the East and I hope all is safe. My fiance is flying to D.C. right now

it sounds like it could be Cheyenne on bluegrass album 5 to me. the banjo is what is throwing me off , there is an old trishka album with a few tunes that could fit the bill, something auld something new something borrowed something bluegrass, is the name of the album. i will give it some more thought and ring in again. i am a huge fan of " the man "and his music is part of my life daily and so replaying his works through my works will be a great pleasure!! reguards sean smith

Tony, I have an instrument question for you. I have a 2000 model SCTR that I purchased from Steve Swan. It is a WONDERFUL instrument. What I'm curious about, have you ever experimented with the neck finish? Sometimes my hand seems to "stick". Happy holidays to you and your family! God Bless!

Pamela and Tony -- Thanks so much for getting back to me so quick. You know it's so funny how when you're ready for a new instrument or source of inspiration one seems to find you. That's how I came about my Martin and also the influence of Clarence. Several years ago after really beginning to go after flatpicking hard a mandolin player named Lou Martin told me - you have to get the Russ Barenberg Clarence White book and all of those KY Colonels albums if you really want to learn it right. Of course at that time all of those resources were out of print. But a friend at a music store found the book in the back and gave it to me and much of the colonels stuff was re-released. Then a friend had an old Martin for sale for $550 because the finish was pretty beat and the top wasn't original. As luck would have it that was exactly how much I just got in my tax return. It's no pre-war 28, but it DOES have a sound that turns heads. Happy holidays to you and the whole Rice clan.

Hi Mrs. Rice, Thank you for getting back to me. Please tell your husband that I didn't mean to imply he was copying Mozart - not at all. The piece just made me think of it..... This is hard, because in print, it's very hard to "hum" the tune. I'll try two ways here. The first is...well heck it's foolish - but you could try tapping out: doodle doodle dooooo...doodle doodle dooooo...doodle doodle doodle doodle doodle doodle doooooo...doo doo - doo doo doo doo - doo doo doo doo - doo doo doo doo doo...lol Makes more sense to offer this: http://www.mfiles.co.uk/Scores/alla-turca.htm That's a midi of the Mozart that Tony's piece makes me think of. Years ago - I lived with relatives before moving on to the "big city". My aunt had a great collection of Tony's music on vinyl- I sat up many nights listening through the headphones. When I left, she kindly put a few things on a tape to have with me 'til I could get my own collection together. Many years later - with a few $'s more than I had then - I'm hoping to have a collection this Christmas on cd. This particular piece, (his playing - what a musician. Amadeus and Tony could go neck in neck in a talent contest)...well this piece is special to me, for reasons too long to go into in this message, as if it weren't long enough already...but his playing on this particular one is, as another old aunt of mine used to say "so tasty it could make your tongue slap your brains out". :-) It's great - and if the "doodle doodle doos" or the midi will help - would love to know what it is I'm listening to. .....In responce to Ben of New York: I was invited, during a visit to the Carolinas back in 1992, to listen to a tape of Chris Jones. The invitation came from American Indian musicians on the pow-wow circut. I am not sure whether Mr. Jones is aware of the growing cult following he has there, or not. I agree that he has a very strong etheral quality to his musicanship, that is very appealing. By his photo, he is also a very handsome man. Though I have never met him in person, I did meet his fellow band member, who was kind enough to foward this c.d. to me. I wish Chris Jones a long and prosperous career.... To you Ben of New York, I send my Warmest Holiday Wishes<><><><<<>>><><><> Respectfully, Pamela

......Pat, Tony`s responce to your questions are:" Clarence White was 100% my mentor as a youth, until I heard the music of Doc Watson. At that point in my life, they became equal mentors". " I would also like to add to that statement by saying, the sound I heard comming from the guitar of Clarence White then, and the sound comming from it now, which I own, is unparalled."......His responce to your question directed at how he came to own the D-28 was: Well, to avoid a 6 page answer, I basically knew where it was, and I went and paid cash for it" "Hope you have a great holiday Pat"......<><><><<<>>><><><> Warmest Regards, Pamela

Hi folks. Recently rediscovered Tony Rice's music and have a question. On an old worn out tape I have a recording of Tony playing an instrumental, accompanied by banjo/fiddle/mandolin. The melody in it sounds like Mozart's "Turkish Rondo". Can you tell me the name of this piece and which album it is on? ....I need to tell "Santa" before he finishes packing up the sled -and I especially want the cd with that piece on it to be under the tree on Christmas morning. Thanks. Very nice site by the way. :-)

I'm really sorry to hear about all of the depressing times that you are having. I've been through that stuff and it's not easy. It takes time but things do get better, I promise you that. The computer thing with Gateway has got to be terrible. I've been through stuff like that myself. My Dell and HP have had its toll of problems escpically with the hard drive crashing. All the best.

Oh my, Kathi. How terrible.I cant believe all the devestating things that happen to you.Altzhimers is one of the worst things a family can deal with.Bad teeth, pain killers and antibotics can take its toll.I hope you can somehow manage to replace the parts on your computer eventually.Apalling the way Gateway has abused you. No wonder you are depressed. What an awful year it must have been for you, but just try to hang in there. I wish I could say something to make you feel better but I am speechless.(HUGS)

Thanks for the kind best wishes from all. This simply has been a very depressing year for me. I am trying my best to keep on top of things, but it is very difficult at times. No thanks to Gateway for replacing my hard drive because, as it states on the bill, it was "very noisy." I never noticed that it was noisy, but even if it were, I'd prefer a noisy drive with info than a quiet one without it. So, I've been having to slowly replace everything I possibly can. After 3 trips to the dentist, they finally determined with an X-ray that I was close to having an absessed tooth where an old filling cracked allowing a cavity to form. After a week of antibiotics and pain killer, I finally got over that. My family just moved my precious Uncle Oscar to a nursing home after he was released from the hospital due to violent behavior because he is in the late stages of Alzheimers... As I said before, it's been a tough year. All prayers are greatly appreciated. I'm not telling you these things to be a "whiner." Just stating facts that are part of my life right now. Love & Peace to all over the Holidays and always!

Mrs. Rice, I know that you and Tony enjoy all types of music....all with one thing in common, that it is good, quality music. for any of you that are big fans of tony's singing, i just recently discovered another singer with that low-lonesome sound by the name of Chris Jones. His band is the Night Drivers and he also has a few solo albums. He makes a pretty good substitute for T's chocolatey voice at least until we are treated to hearing it anew (fingers crossed). best wishes to tony and pamela, the dogs, birds, cars and everything and everyone else. ben

Hey, I'm a fan from way back. My dad used to take me around the festival circuit quite regularly growing up, and even as a like 5-10 year old when we would be at palces like the Frontier Ranch, Festival of the Blugrass, IBMA (back when it was on the river in Owensboro), and later at the Paramont Arts center, I would always look forward to seeing Tony Rice (and Doyle Lawson..but anyways..)As I grew older and "rebellious" I kinda lost my roots a bit, but in the process picked up the guitar myself. When I got to college I found that the RA's didn't care much for a Les Paul copy blaring through a 100w amp, so I wound up picking up the acoustic and rediscovering Tony Rice. Thanks for making great music, and keep it up. By the way....to Mrs. Rice or whoever answers these...does Tony ever get bit by the electric bug? If so...does it sound similar to his acoustic playing?

Hello to all! And in particular, very, very happy but belated anniversary wishes to Pam and Tony. Life's been crazy out here in the middle of the Pacific, but I want to let you know that I love you both, and wish you every happiness on your path together. ==== A couple of months ago, I gave Kathi some links to share on this site. But it sounds very much like she has a full plate, with the losses of several family members and friends, and the demise of her computer. Hope things get better soon, Kathi! In the meantime, I'd like to share those links with y'all. I'm a writer, and I've penned a couple of articles about Tony that might be of interest to his fans and friends. The first was for my column in Bluegrass Now magazine, and you can find it at http://www.wrightforyou.com/offstage3.html. It's a fun little glimpse into the Rice household, which, Pam says, is going to the dogs! The second is a huge story, complete with rare and previously unpublished photos, that I wrote for the sadly-now-defunct Listener magazine. This article is probably one of the most ambitious things I've ever written! It contains some biographical info, quotes from Tony's friends and from reviewers who rave about his work, and plenty of insights from The Man himself. It's at http://www.wrightforyou.com/tonylistener.html. Oh, and by the way, visiting my site won't cost you a cent! If you read these articles and enjoy them, please feel free to share them with other TR fans! And thank you, very much, for visiting my site; there's lots of stuff on it about other musicians, and if you are a bluegrass fan, you may find much of interest here. ==== Again, CONGRATULATIONS to Pam and Tony, my two faraway compadres. I love you both so much, and am honored to be your friend. ---warmest aloha from Caroline

My husband Rex (who has played bluegrass music(guitar and mandolin) since he was 19 years old is an overwhelming Tony Rice fan. He knows every song from the first note played.. I just wanted Mr. Rice to know that if he only had one fan that would he could count on that being Rex!! I appreciate all the enjoyment that is brought to my husbands life.. I just got the circle 3 album and must confess that the only thing that is good about it is the one song Tony plays on. The rest of it is pretty sucky in my opinion. I wish the dirt band would have had Tony on the circle 2 album with Tony on the tune the valley road with Bruce Hornsby, but I guess IM dreaming. Keep up the great picking tony. JT

Tony Rice "Native American" is one of the greatest records of all time. The entire record sets a mood. The song selection alone speaks volumes about Mr.Rice. Perhaps some of the most tasteful and creative breaks played on the acoustic guitar lie on this album. To listen to the break on "Shadows" you'll know what i mean. Where the true genius lies is in the Guitar/Dobro trade on "Go My Way". The line is grey where one instrument ends and the next begins. Truly elegant. Native American is the quintessential Tony Rice album for not just guitar players but for all musicians of any genre. Thank you Tony for such an masterful work.

Got to agree with ya`ll on the Ronnie Bowman Band thing, but add its the present configuration of the whole band involved, especially the female backup vocalist. I believe one of them is his new wife. Wyatt Rice gives the electric charge more voltage. Like that cold chill award thing Mrs. TR. Have to cast my vote on the same premise. Tex

Pamela, Tony, I was all over the IBMA Awards, backstage, covering it for the mag but did not run into you. It would have great to meet you. I interviewed Jim Hurst and, believe me, he thinks the world of Tony and was about half freaked out just to be in the same catagory. Man, is the IBMA week crazy. I saw so many late night jams it was unreal. I am just now getting my bearings back. But I put a lot of faces to many folks I have dealt with in the business, and out of the business, and it was a blast. One thing that was great was seeing the Young Folks showcase. There are some youngsters out there that can dern near outpick me. Jennifer Kennedy, also known as DobroGal, was a stand out as was Sierra Hull on the mandolin. Impressive. There was a similar showcase featuring some 12 year olds back in 1992 and it had Chris Thile and Mike Cleveland in it, and the rest is history with those two guys for sure. One of the better late night jams was the great blind fiddler ,Mike Cleveland, who won 2 awards that week, jamming with Darrell Webb, the excellent mandolin picker for Wildfire, and Glenn Gibson, a new and very hot Dobro player that just joined up with Coon Creek. 2:30 am, went until who knows. There were jams about every 20 feet for the first 19 floors of the hotel, all night long. Those that were there know what I mean. I also ran into banjer legend Bill Kieth who played with Monroe many years back and is known for pioneering a melodic style of pickin'. A friend of mine, who also loves Tony' playing, put a video together of Tony playing from 1975, with JD CROWE, to about 1992 with Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Marc O'Connor and Mark Shatz, whom I saw at the IBMA's. What a cook, and an inspiriation for this hack guitar player. Folks , if you don't have Ricky Simpkins latest CD, "Don't Fret It", pick it up. It has Tony all over it and the song, "Old Tree", is my favorite song going right now. Excellent stuff. Enough for now. See ya'. Derek Halsey blenderlip@hotmail.com

I've explained before, and feel I need to update you on things as I have now had 5 losses in my family/friend arena since July 1st and I wonder when it is going to stop. Also, my business computer is still down (now 8 weeks, no thanks to Gateway!), and it is now in South Dakota being serviced. Please be patient a bit longer and call me at our toll-free number (866.866.9291) if you need to discuss anything with me about orders or other matters. Thanks for understanding. Please note that normally I would not put this type of comment on the guest book as it is specifically for Tony's honor; but knowing how many of you come here first at sign-on, I felt it the best place to put this. I had the opportunity to see Tony this past weekend at Magnoliafest. WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!! Saturday started out with Larry Keel and Vassar. This was followed by an afternoon set that included David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and Bryn Bright. About halfway through the set Jerry Douglas joined in. I have never ever seen Tony in better form. The sound was great and it appeared everyone was feeding off one another. I have heard Tony play the solo's he performed before, but he has added to and built on them. He is never satisfied with playing just enough to get by. Great to see the looks on his bandmates faces when Tony would rip off something totally unexpected. One of the highlights was Vassar waving his hanky at Tony's guitar to cool it off. Great playing Tony. May God bless you and your family.

.......I would like to wish my loving husband and best friend Tony Rice, Happy Aniversary Today. Our personal duties did not allow us to celebrate together today, but thank God for cell phones. He was on tour, and I, just returning from I.B.M.A. to represent him, in his absence......Though we try to keep our personal life simple and non public, I wish to tell him and his fan`s he has been the best husband, and best friend, I could have ever wished for.....He has given me everything I ever asked for, and more....Made personal sacrifices, in order to allow me, the time and means to fulfill my personal obligations and my own dreams...He has taken care of me, since childhood, always personally overseeing my saftey and comfort....He has given me unlimited freedom, only asking, are you having fun? do you have everything you need?.....He has never tried to change me. Always acceped me the way I am, faults and all. He has laughed at my "screw up`s" rather than fussing about them....He does funny and silly things to make me laugh, and keep life on the light side.....How do you tell a husband like this how much you love him, and really thank him for the best years of your life? He is truely, my "better half" " my KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR"....Tony, I love you beyond words.......Your Closest Fan, and Soul Mate, Pamela <><><><<<>>><><><>

Does anyone know the specs on the setup of Tony's guitar? Specifically the measurements of the action? I'm curious because even after having a neck reset and a new saddle and nut made, I'm finding the action on this Martin to be too high to facilitate playing the way I usually do. I know Tony is "notorious" for his low action, so if anyone has any measurements, this may tell me how low it is *possible* to go with a well setup instrument. I have another guitar that is not a Martin and is a 200 dollar beginner guitar that seems to play better than this Martin. Seems like the action on this Martin gets higher as it goes up the neck. The other guitar's action stays the relatively the same height all the way up. Thank you to any and all who respond. pharmboycu@yahoo.com

A good audio system was already defined decades ago, with the simple term " HIGH FIDELITY". Great audio systems are available CHEAP. A good playback system should be manditory for any serious listener. There are loads of reputable USED audio equip. dealers. For that matter, full frequency audio reproduction can be had for as little 100 dollars, via a good portable CD Player and headphones......Serious Musicans who do not have good audio playback should have their instruments crushed and incinerated, or donated to a day care center".......T.R_________Well there you go, his answer verbatum......With Love Pamela

Just wanted to thank Tony for years of great music. I especially wanted to say thanks for Church Street Blues. My Dad introduced me to that record when I was a kid who didn't know what I was hearing. I remember him trying to get me to sit down and listen to "Streets of London" but I was too busy doing whatever I was doing. Alas, I came around a few years later. I keep rediscovering it and lately I've been wearing it out--I wish more people could hear what real music sounds like. And what I'd give to hear Tony sing Orphan Annie again. When it's just a voice and a guitar, there's no place to hide, no way to gloss over a mistake. It's honest, it's real. Thanks Tony, for being the real thing.

Wouldn't ya know it, yesterday I found this website, and I read that Tony was in Cleveland back in August. I've been trying to find a concert date near here for a long time, and I guess I missed out. For those who attended, how was it? Last time I saw Tony was at a place called the Mohican Bluegrass Festival with John Hartford and Del McCoury. His voice was sounding kind of rough, but it was still an awesome show. Hey, is anyone out there in the Akron Cleveland area going to see Rhonda Vincent in Akron in November? Thanks for the great music, Tony. I've been a fan for about 15 years now, and no matter what, I can put Manzanita in the CD player, and all my worries go away for awhile.

If you read this, I thought that I would save you the trouble of going to Lightfoot's web-site. They said the problem was: Late Monday afternoon, the surgeon said that Lightfoot's health problems were caused by a weak blood vessel in his abdomen, and that if he had not been so otherwise healthy, the condition might have killed him. ctrorrer@ctc.net

Yes, condolences to Caroline Wright. Must be tough. She is an excellent Bluegrass writer whose work I appreciate and admire much. I have been lucky enough to have been assigned to review the new "Will The Circle Be Unbroken III" CD. One reason why that is a good thing is that I get to spread the word on a new piece of Tony Rice music that wil be on it and out October 1st. The only cut that one could consider to be newgrass on the album is "Return To Dismal Swamp II." It is a smoking instrumental with the likes of John McEuen, Jerry Douglas, Ronnie McCoury, Glen Duncan, and throwing down a solo that turns your head in a big way is Tony Rice. Lest there be any doubts, Mr. Rice has spoken and all others need not apply. Sounds great, good to see some of the old gang jamming together on what will be an historic CD. DH

I purchased Tony's video (Homespun) and was knocked out by Tony's version of Church Street Blues. I'm not sure I have the lyrics right and there are variations in the chord progression (the intro/instrumental part is well covered) which I would like to also get just right. Anyone out there studied this version of church street blues and could help me. Nick

Since Tony spends a great deal of time on the road, and the fact he is very busy these days, we can't promise every question will be answered but Tony has promised to participate. Look for it to be posted in the next few days. This will be the best way to get your message to Tony himself. Thank you for your support.

To respond to a few of the recently previous listers: Tony is coming to the Gordon Center in Owings Mills (north of Baltimore) in September... the date is listed on the tour dates portion of this page. Church Street, Manzanita, Unit of Measure, Plays and Sings Bluegrass..they're all good!!! I've recently been trying to listen to his projects as a sideman, like the stuff he did with Jerry D and Bela Fleck. Its fun to hear Tony both fit into and fill out the space he's given in a songm as well as make everyone sound that much better. I've heard a lot of people who hear Tony's playing, specifically his soloing, and say that they don't understand it and that he tries too much. That's the point. Its not instantly accesible all of the time, and its not simple all of the time. He can do a solo like the one on "Whitewater" on Drive and bust out a bunch of partially chorded melodies and then turn around and play a nice, short solo like the one on "Carolina Star" where he modifies the melody beautifully. Since he's an absolute master, I've stopped trying to figure out his technique when going to see him or when I'm just listening...the music is too beautiful to analyze all of the time. God bless you and yours, Mr. Rice. Our family considers you one of ours. My ten cents (my two cents were free), Andy

Yeah, plays and sings Gordon Lightfoot is a great one as well. I love all of Tony's material but as in my own opinion Church Street Blues, Blake and Rice, and Blake and Rice 2 are still without a doubt my three favorite Rice albums. The tuning fork is the only way to go, it makes You use Your ear more. Electronic tuners are the ruination of the world. What I mean by that, is that people have gotten lazy about wanting to tune their instruments, when they should be training their ear.

I was at a show last night and was hearing some people talking about Doyle Lawson having a serious heart attack yesterday. I know that Tony is close to Doyle and was wondering if someone could verify this. Stan

Brad-- Get "Manzanita" and "Skaggs & Rice" and "Church St. Blues" for starters. That should get you hooked. "Native American" and "Cold on the Shoulder" are also excellent.

I just recently started to get into bluegrass, and I would like to know which albums are essential. Any suggestions for 1 or 2 essential Tony Rice albums? Thanks, Brad Brad_343@hotmail.com

Ran across your site searching for an old friend, who has signed in here. I first heard you on David Grisman Quintet's first album in 197?. At the time I was going through Clarence White commemoration. I heard of both of you through David Barenberg, Russ Barenberg's younger brother, God bless him. Especially enjoy the first Bluegrass Album Band record and its understated mastery of the genre. I have picked the same Martin 000-28 for 35 years, and on occasions much rarer than yours, every note my brain creates actually makes it out to the fingerboard in real time. Long Live Bluegrass!

I was told that Peter Rowan and Tony Rice were making a new cd last summer. Does anyone know if it is out and what the name of it is? By the way, saw them at Jamgrass 2002 in NH. There are no words for that kind of talent!

I'm learning bluegrass and just received my first Tony video. I'm hooked. I can't learn fast enough. I appreciate Tony' hard work and God given skill at mastering the guitar. Thank you for taking the time to pass it along. God bless you.

I was recording a bluegrass album at Sound Control Studio in Dogwood Place, Nashville when you were recording "Circle III" at Randy Scruggs' studio with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a host of other bluegrass maestros. Jerry Douglas had been interviewed at our studio the day before and suggested we might like to come round and see a bit of the action, so we turned up. You might just recall shaking hands with a slightly awkward Englishman (me) and a relatively short American with a grey moustache (my dobro player, Ced Thorose). Like countless others, you have been an inspiration to me for many years. I am going to send you a copy of the album I was making while you were making Circle III. If you feel so inclined I would be thrilled if you would sign my guest book - the most recent signature is from Jim Hurst, who played on this album. The website address is www.laramusic.co.uk

On the very day of my first flat picking guitar lesson, i was amazed to the point of almost going into a coronary (hehe) that my favorite guitarist tony rice had been slated at the last minute to perform in lexington ky. with only an hour to get there from louisville, i drove at least 90 miles an hour and made it with five minutes to spare!! whoo im still out of breath, i must say..a fat speeding ticket was worth the risk. thank you so much tony for playing! anyone that reads this post, i need a setlist from this show! you can reach me at jkitterm@ius.edu and the show is aug 3 2002 lexington opera house in lexington ky. thank you tony;)

Hey Pam, I am a good friend of Preacher Dale Tilley and he said you were more than willing to answer a couple of questions I had about Tony's choice of mics. I know on his new intstructional course he talks about using a sony and neuman on recordings and even two neumans in his previous recordings. My question though, is about his live setup. I thought he used an AKG but I'm not sure. If you could tell me what kind of mic he uses while playing live, I would be so appreciative. Also, I was wondering if Tony has recording equipment of his own, and if so what kind does he use? I know sound quality is so important to him, so if I can see his preferences, I will know what to look into. Thank you so much! -Cole

Howdy folks. I justgot the advance copy of Will The Circle Be Unbroken III, and Tony is on one of the truly outstanding cuts on the CD. The song is called "Return To Dismal Swamp II", and itis a jam featuring the likes of Glen DUncan on fiddle, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, John McEuen on banjer, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and many others. Needless to say that playing in a crowd like that could be intimidating. But Tony's solo is rocking. There ain't a dern thing wrong with Tony's playing, other than the jealousy of those like myself who try to emulate his picking. Good job TR. Talk to you and Pam soon. Hi Tony, Caught your act(s) over this past weekend at the RockyGrass fester in Lyons CO, and it was up to your usual stellar standards. What can I (or anyone) say? Your playing knocked my ears off when I first heard you on 09-04-70 in the parking lot at Carlton Haney's fester in Reidsville NC, and has continued to knock my (and everybody else's) ears off. Despite the comments of a gal seated near me, who was hoping to hear some Britney Spears material, I think that you do good work; keep at it. My husband bought tickets to see Tony in Columbus,OH the moment he saw that Tony would be playing at Promowest. Needless to say we are quite disapointed to see that he is now playing in Kentucky that day and Tony's website notes this as a venue change. Kind of irritating, since Tony is the only draw for us to attend this function, that he would change the venue 3 days before a concert. Won't stop us from listening to his music however. He is a fav in our home.

Tony....was steered onto you by a guitarist by the name of Terry Tufts. Your playing just absolutely knocked me out. Well done. I'm one of those closet guitarists that has been picking guitar for over forty years, and would like to expand my technique. It was mentioned in your bio that you studied chord progression. Tha's something I'd like to get into. What would you recommend???? Keep up the inspiring work, and if you're ever up in Canada....I'll be there.....front row centre. Ron Thompson.

Just heard about a couple of shows that Tony played with Ricky Skaggs back in the day. I've never needed to hear something more than I need to hear that. If anyone may know the whereabouts of those live shows, let me know. I'll do anything to get my hands on that, well, not everything. Long live the Unit.
