Kathy so sorry to hear about all the troubles you keep having. your trials are heartbreaking.Hope all is better for you soon. Keep us posted. I was up at the hospital when Tonys cousin Erle Scott Lillard was brought in because of the copperhead bite. I heard he almost died but is making a slow recovery. all of you need to be a little more careful lately.Would not want to lose any of you. Hope Tony is better too.

I was reading through some of these comments and see alot about Tony's guitar playing (which rocks) but I wanted to say his singing was some of the most beautiful I had ever heard.

Tony regrets to inform his fans he will be unable to attend tonight's performance at Strawberry Park, in Preston Ct (5/29/03) due to a recent slip/fall on his patio. Rest assured he is in the fine care of two doctors, and can't make this performance as a precaution to insure his ultimate well being. Please note that there are no plans to cancel upcoming shows this weekend in VA.

Tony's music has been helping us through some tough times, too, Workin' in DC. (Give me a call on our toll-free number -- 866.866.9291, please.) In case any of you have wondered why the lack of activity on the site on our part, we've been dealing with a number of losses in addition to those mentioned sometime back. A real toughie was the loss of our little Chihuahua, Chiquita, who has left a huge void in our lives as well as the suicide of a very dear friend. We're getting back on track, but slowly.

Cool, Scott. I'll contact you away from this site soon. I'll be in town (Berea) this weekend through Monday, hopefully. I'd like to get together and pick with you and your Dad or whoever sometime. I'm sure I'll see Vester and maybe Jeff sometime while I'm in. I'll be back in July for a couple of weeks. I'll check out your new site. To close, I'll include a statement that I have in my band's Press Packet biography concerning Tony Rice and his influence on acoustic / bluegrass guitarists. It states; "Acoustic/Bluegrass guitar is what it is today because of Tony Rice and those Artists who influenced him....PERIOD!" I truly believe that. Keep layin' it down Tony!!

Jeff, yes my dad is the banjo player that played with Southern Blend, John Cosby and even played mandolin with JD Crowe. Currently he is playing with me and the family in a family band we call Wayne Fields and Driftwood (www.waynefieldsanddriftwood.com). I know Jeff and Vestor Parker real well. Come on down and let me know when you do so we can get together and have some fun!

I've got more stories about artists with bad attitudes than I care to have but I can safely say that bluegrass artists are the most polite, easy to get along with folks I've ever met. Although I've only met Tony once, and very briefly, I was pleasantly pleased that he was as nice as could be. Wish I could say that about some of the others I've met over the years.

I'll agree with Danny 100% about some musicians having bad attitudes off stage. I've been in the music business all my life and I've come across many rude musicians. The names will remain nameless, unless you would like to know. Tony is a great guy. Eveytime that I've spoken with Tony he has been willing to talk.

Danny Good to hear your comment! When I turned you on to Tony's guitar playing 5 years ago I told you he was "THE MAN" and there was no other that could touch him. Talk to you soon and Best Wishes to Tony always. I am your number 1 fan Tony.

I am a musician myself, and there are alot of musicians with really bad attitudes off stage. But I have become good freinds with Tony and he is a great guy and I think he would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. In my opinion Tony is the greatest guitar player and person that the music world has ever known.......

Scott from Richmond, KY: It's good to see someone from the old hometown!! I lived around Boonesborough and went to Madison Central. In the Navy now. Anyway, is your Dad, Wayne Fields the KILLER Banjo Player. If so, I saw him when he was with John Cosby and the Bluegrass Drifters. A great group they were at that time(maybe still). Wayne Fields, Larry Raines, Rick Johnson, etc... I believe Ricky Wasson played with them for a while and now he's back with JD Crowe and the New South (again). I remember part of the Cosby group broke off and formed Southern Blend. Another great group. Most of the biggest Bluegrass names close to you come to Meadowgreen Park in Clay City and the Lexington/Renfro Valley Festivals. I'd love to meet and pick sometime when I come in for Military leave. I play around Berea alot with Jeff and Vester Parker when I'm in town. I share your respect and admiration for Mr. and Mrs. Rice. I kind of laugh at all the BS that goes around from time to time. Some people really have too much time on their hands and get bored, I'm convinced. Flattop fever.......Catch It!

Mr. Rice, First of all I just want to say that I wish I could live the life that you live. It sounds so pure compared to the everyday life of almost everyone else. I also want to say that it is my biggest dream to meet with you in person. I got to see you for the first time about two years ago in the Kentucky Theatre, Lexington, KY and almost cried. You are my hero and I want to talk with you but I live in Richmond and not many of your shows are booked close. I'm almost positive that you have met my dad at holiday inn back when you played there with crowe and the new south but you prolly dont remeber him. His name is Wayne Fields. I try everyday to better myself at playing the guitar and to play with the same attack and dynamics that you play with, without trying to copy you completely (we all know that no one can copy anyone else's style exactly much less a master like yourself). Anyways, I guess I just want to know if you have anything booked within the next 5 years or so around Richmond so that I will have a date for the greatest moment of my life.

Derek- How ever many brownie points I made by skipping the show and going to my bro-in-law's party can never compensate for missing that concert. I had backstage passes as well. Perhaps a certain "someone" will take this in to account come our anniversary. I should post my phone number for TR to call and speak to my wife when he's in town again. Better to come from him than me, eh?

Doc..............I have no words to express what I am thinking right now. Yep, ole Tony is in Texas every other week. Heck, I would have called your bro-in-law for you, but not the wife.:) Then again I am spoiled by Merlefest as Tony was all over. I really liked what Tony does with Peter Rowan and Don Edwards. That good western sound with Tony playing over top is sweet. I can tell you that TOny is proud of that album, High Lonesome Cowboy, and proud that it was nominated for a GRammy. Tony and Don and Peter did it up at Merle with Norman Blake and BRyn Bright sitting in. Tony's jam with Vassar Clements was awesome. Sam B., Jerry D, Bela, Bryan Sutton, and the rest put on one of the true performance highlights of the weekend. Good stuff, and once again bro, a pleasure. Derek H www,gritz.net

I missed Tony's Austin/UT performance because I "had" to attend my brother-in-law's birthday party. This, in itself, should put me in line for sainthood. On the other hand, it should also put me in line for Moron of the Year. Come back, TR, I promise to show up.

Ive read the letter Tony wrote, I agree with things he said just don't the background info about what hes talking about, I do know this, I've yet to see another musician with the same calibar of class and humanity, cept for Doc. Tony is a fine human being, and has a unique sound that is impossible to mimmick. He loves the music he's playing and he enjoys entertaing people with it, what a great life he has, bringing smiles to faces who share his love for music, I did read a couple of negative posts in the guestbook, and I personally am sorry he had to see that, In his heart, he knows he is loved, and common sense would tell him that these folks are jealous, and jealousy is a form of evil. Just ignore these folks and they will go away. Tony, thanks for giving so much to us, Godspeed!

Gongratulations to you Mike Davis! The best in life is yet to come! My son, 3 1/2 yrs old, is about to have his first Martin, an old Martin 5-18. I'm having it fixed and set up for him so he can have it as soon as he stops dragging it around the floor by the headstock. The other day, when listening to Chet Baker on the car stereo, he said; "Dad! that's a telesaxophone!!" Yes, I know CB played the trumpet, but still that's cute, isn't it? For the first four weeks of his life, he listened to "TR Plays and sings bluegrass" non stop after I found it in a local store. No wonder he's become such a great kid!

To Mike Davis- Congratulations, brother. You're about to start out on the greatest thing that will ever happen to you! My daughter is now 2 and 1/2 and when I was in your shoes I had some similar aspirations. She does indeed love life and love music. Of course she went and was born left handed so now I'm gonna have to buy all new instruments for her instead of just passing them on. As long as you keep it fun for her and she's got some aptitude you won't have to do much more than save your pennies for a good instrument -- which is absolutely essential. Mediocre instruments aren't going to move em along well. I posted a story here a while back, but as a parent I think I have the right to do it again: back when she'd just turned two we were listening to a local b-grass radio show and Skaggs' version of "I just think I'll stay around" came on. I hadn't heard it and don't have a copy. Skaggs sang lead on verses and Tony sang lead on choruses and when the first chorus came around she looked up at me and said, "Daddy, that's Tony Rice." If music is in the cards for your kid, you really won't have to do much. They'll find that destiny the way a stone finds it's way to the bottom of a creek. Check out Carolyn Wright's website. she has some articles on there about parents of famous musicians and what their parents did to bring them along. www.wrightforyou.com.

Tony, It was a pleasure to meet you finally... after 15 years of waiting. You were in rare form the other night in Austin (May 10th, 2003)! I hope to attend one of your shows again soon. I would really love to see you do a show by yourself. The solo piece you performed was like magic!! They should have you do an HBO special all by your lonesome! (Next time I will be sure to get new batteries for my camera before the show.. hopefully it won't be 15 years again before that chance comes around). I hope that you know that you are a huge inspiration to all your fans. I have several favorite musicians (each on his own instrument) but I have never heard a virtuoso that even compares to your work of genius on the flat-top. Many of us will never understand why we're here but there is no doubt that you were put here with a God-given talent (that you have perfected over the years) -- and that talent should not be hidden! The whole world should be able to hear your music! I feel like there are only hundreds of thousands who have been blessed to be exposed to your work. That is very, very wrong. Your solo piece the other night alone was enough to do a cable t.v. special & air around the whole world! I hope that not only I, but that millions more will soon be seeing more of your masterpieces such as you demonstrated in Austin. May the Lord richly bless you forever -- & yeah we hold you up in prayer. Anyone as truly God-gifted as you must have trials to match... & I want you to know that you have fans who not only appreciate your work but thank God for you & hold you up in prayer. In closing, again, it was a day I will never forget (even if my camera didn't help out for the memories)... & I had alot of things I wanted to talk to ya about but I felt like you were tired & ready to call it a night so maybe next time. My wife is 4 1/2 months pregnant with our 1st child, for whom I have 3 major petitions of God: I want him/her to love the Lord, be healthy, & play like you, or at least be as dedicated to what they will do as you must be to the guitar! I aim for your music to be played while our child is being born... as a sort of primer for things to come. As every parent in his right mind, I want the best for my child, so they will be Tony Rice-experts before they can talk if I have my way about it. Lord bless ya Tony, Mike Davis.(www.md950@yahoo.com)

I attended your concert in Austin Sat. night. It was fantastic.Very impressed with your playing, also the entire group. Thanks for a nice evening. My wife, son, and his date spent the whole time glued to the stage. Your entire show and performances were well worth the price of admission. Thanks for signing autographs after the show. I know you guys were tired but you stayed anyway. Everyone showed so much class in everything you did. I was impressed with the way everyone presented themselves. Truly professional. Thanks again for such a wonderful evening. You come in contact with so many people you probably won't remember me but you signed my poster out on the upper porch. I was wearing a black shirt with white flowers on it.Thanks again.

I am one of Tony's fans who heard and saw him perform at Merlefest this year. He continues to be a source that I can go to when I want to hear what a master can do with his instrument. Although his demeanor on stage is humble, he continues to be a powerful player and a consummate performer. Thank you Tony, for creating the music that carried me through some dark days and helped me celebrate the great ones! Here's hoping for many more opportunities to see you play live.

I don't know what all the fuss was about, don't really care. Tony Rice said his piece on HIS web site. That should sort of end any arguments. "Just and entertainer"? I guess so, but if you feel that this means he has to take any crap a "fan" elects to dish out then I suppose you have some psychological issues to work out. Tony is a guitar player, one of the best that's ever been, in my opinion. I have played guitar for 42 years and I know a master of the instrument when I hear one. Mr. Rice is a master. He is also a human being and as such is entitled to some repect and courtesy. He is also entitled to have HIS website reflect his values and his notions of acceptable behavior. If you can't deal with that go elsewhere. I, for one, can accept those terms. I listen to Mr. Rice's music and it gives me great pleasure. I check his website once in a while just out of curisoity, and to see if he is going to be performing anywhere I can get to. If I want to get into a discussion of any other isuues I can go elsewhere and say what I want, that's my right, but while I'm here I will obey the rules. That's the way life works. Tony Rice does not owe anyone explainations, defenses, or appologies. All he owes any "fan" is his music and it seems to me he has lived up to his end of the bargain very well. Chris McEntee

I have been playing guitar now for about 10 years or so, and I was about to quit three years ago. I started taking lessons from a guy named Russ Bucy that opened me up to Newgrass (Tony, Sam , Bela, & Jerry Douglas to name a few). This music has raised the bar for me as a musician and revived my hope in an industry that has been self-decimating as of late. I didn't know how good music could sound until I got "Tales From The Acoustic Planet Part II" and "Manzanita", along with various other albums you guys put out. PURE GENIUS. I just want to say that musicians like yourself are the reason that I love music and continue to spend every free minute I have on flatpicking and Jazz/Newgrass theory. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! You are truly a living legend.

Hey Scott, I agree with you on dynamics. Dynamics and CD are sort of mutually exclusive. We can thank the good folks at Sony for that. CD's have a very limited range of dynamics. It starts here, and goes only a certain number of db beyond the starting point, and never below. How is that like real music? ? ? ? It's not. Vinyl starts at zero, and goes infinitely. That is where we get the dynamics from, and until they come with a recorded format that has REAL dynamics, I will be stuck with my vinyl as first choice for reproduction. You're right though, I heard a string quartet last weekend on the porch of a big plantation down in Wilson, and there is no reproduction system in the world that will touch even the simplest of live events. BTW Scott, did I see you playing with Taylor in Eden at Doc's last show there? BTW Taylor, I was at the RRHP at Merlefest 2001.

Too many good things to mention that Tony has put on vinyl, cassette tape and CD. If I could only have ONE record while stuck on a deserted Island somewhere though, it would have to be "Church Street Blues". I love all his stuff, but the simplicity and purity of this recording sets it apart in my book. As for all the other CRAP going on that forced the 07 May letter from the man himself....it's easy for you basher's to use generous avenues like this guestbook to post your ignorant comments. Utilize the other golden rule.."If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".. Loosely translated..."Go Elsewhere" If this upsets you, we'll know by your comments who true fans are. Oh yeah, for all you "free speechers" and "tree-huggers", go find a political science site to elaborate your theories, please. Peace - from an Active Duty US Navy Submariner. I would just like to say what a sheer joy it has been to listen to Tony over the last 22 years(and I'm only 28). Some of the best memories I have as a boy are listening to "Freeborn Man" in the car with my Dad and seeing that smile come across his face when Tony says..."I've always loved the gal next door, but any place is home..." Tony, if you're reading...Thank You!

Tony and Pam provided such wonderful material; how could I go wrong? Again, I'm delighted you enjoyed it! Aloha from Caroline

vinyl records played on an old record player....ahhhh, the nostalgia of it all. Back in the days before tape and especially before CDs, they had vinyl and nothing else....which means the recording process was created to sound its best played on a record player...which when played with lotsa volume it sounds so full...unlike a Cd player which just gets louder and louder....dynamics at a minimum. But even before vinyl there was another medium...it was called LIVE. Imagine the sound of a pipe organ in a church as compared to say my basement. The rooms acoustics factors so much for the sound. So when J.S. Bach is being played in Carnegie Hall it blows you away. Just like my cousin did singing opera(now in NYC) and how his LIVE performance blew me away....which is no different than 5 guys and/or gals playing bluegrass on the front porch. Depends on the mood. Ok there's my two cents worth. And long live TR and his music.

I've seen Tony numerous times and I'm going to say the three best time that I've seen him live have been he and Norman Blake. The next best would be the show at Martinsville High School in VA. It was called The Acoustic Giants and it included Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bele Fleck, Rickie and Ronnie Simpkins. The last would be the set at MerleFest a few years ago. That included Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Roy Huskey Jr., Bela Fleck and few others which I can't remember their names at this time. I remember half way through the set, Bryan Sutton came out and he and Tony did one hell of verison of Black Berry Blossom. Those have got to be the three best times I've seen him live. Did anyone see the Rice, Rice, Hillman, Pedseron show at MerleFest a few years back? I've got several pictures of that around the house some place.

I applaud Tony's comments and appreciate his taking time from his busy schedule to "staighten" out those few who would use his site for their own purposes. I know that I am visiting his "house" and as his guest I agree to follow his rules. Pretty simple. Sometimes, in our zeal to get closer to our favorite artists, we forget that they deserve their privacy as much as we, the fans, do. If we are fortunate enough to meet our idols, remember there are others who would also like to meet them. Shake hands, say a few words then move on. But when visiting their "houses" be a polite guest and maybe you'll get invited back.

At the risk of stirring things up I'm curious to know what happened on the board here since I've been away for a week or so. If anyone wants to help me out email me at xms237@yahoo.com. And personally I think Tony's right. There's plenty of forums on the internet to discuss political opinions and the like. Right now it'd be nice to have a place to be away from that sometimes. My only beef with Mr. Rice right now is that he hasn't answered my Clarence White cross picking question yet. Just like to add that I'm lovin my new Santa Cruz. For a used guitar it's in perfect condition except that somebody wrote their name on the label!

Geez, I swore I wouldn't get caught up in this but here I go. I agree that freedom of speech is absolutely necessary in our society. Let's get that out of the way right off the bat. Now, as far as what should and should not be posted here on Tonyrice.com, in my most humble opinion, should only be POSTITVE comments. Why? Because this isn't a debate forum. This is a tool used to spread the good word about Tony Rice. Anyone who knows anything about marketing will tell you to "Market success". That simply means push only the positive things about your talent, product, etc...... If you've got something good to say to Tony, put it here. If you feel the need to slam him for whatever reason, make your own site and invite others to join it. This isn't the place to talk trash. I equate it to walking into someones house or yard and telling them they dress funny or smell bad. You're visiting someones property here. Don't disrespect the man on his own turf. It's petty, childish, and just plain ol' mean! The man has made accomplishments by leaps and bounds. He single handedly reinvented and refined the old styles and innovated brand new styles of music. I'd also be willing to bet that his talent doesn't come naturally. Huh, you say? Nope i'd have to guess that it came only after hours and hours, and days after days,, and years upon years of practice. If you choose to come here, come with the knowledge that Mr. Rice has made MAJOR contributions to the living and everchanging being that is called music and has done so humbly and tastefully. Respectfully, C.L. Garvin IV

I just got back from Merlefest last week - the highlight of my entire weekend was the Vasser birthday jam friday afternoon. Tony was fired up and it was great to see he and Brian Sutton dueling. Tony had a huge grin on his face the entire set - Great to see people loving what they do! (and do well.)

I have loved Tony Rice's music for 30 years, since I was a child. Lately, I've come to know him as an adult, as a faraway friend with whom I chat occasionally and with great pleasure. He's opinionated, complex, and fiercely self-sufficient; he pursues his great love--music--to the point of distraction, and he's as smart as the day is long, a true critical thinker in a time when most of us sleepwalk through our days. I may not agree with every word he says, but one thing's certain: I agree absolutely with every note he plays! NOBODY picks it better than Tony Rice (though he'd probably have a few humble arguments about THAT). And really, isn't that what we're here to talk about--the music we love so much? Politically, Tony and I don't always see eye to eye. And that's okay; we still manage to respect and care for each other as friends. Believe me when I tell you that he is the first to admit his own mortality, his own humanity. He probably even puts his pants on one leg at a time, just like the rest of us! Frankly, however, I find Tony the MAN to be inseparable from Tony the MUSICIAN. Where does his inspiration come from? What pisses him off; what brings him joy? What are his spiritual and social beliefs? What does he do when he ISN'T making timeless music? To me, all of that is as relevant as the strings he uses and the pick he prefers. So I wrote an article about it. If you want to read it, please visit http://www.wrightforyou.com/tonylistener.html. But if you have no interest in anything but his music, what are you doing here in the first place? Go buy a record! We are ALL mortals. We ALL have "psychological issues." Some of us have fears that prevent us from accomplishing great things. Some of us carry heavy burdens of sadness and jealousy and rage through our entire lives, unable or unwilling to leave them by the side of the path. Some of us stand in line at WalMart, counting warts on the customers in front of us, thinking bitter, impotent thoughts and longing for new forums in which to spread messages of chaos and dischord. And some of us just get out there and do what we do best. In Rice's case, that involves thousands of miles on the road each year, a career with no stability or security or 401K, a job in which endless hours of mind-numbing boredom, repetition and road rash are rewarded with a 45-minute set and a few sweet moments of applause. Aren't we so lucky that he didn't decide to become an accountant or a salesman or a computer programmer? Thank you, Tony, for every precious note.

Hey Tony I gotta say for the most part I agree with your opinions. I think that vinil is great even though I didn't grow up with it. No one should touch Shenadoah or Danny Boy aside from you. How about doing a concert closer to southern Tennessee in the near future? I would have to say my favorite Tony Rice albums are Acoustics, Manzanita , California Autum, and Church Street Blues. Keep giving us young musicians a person of high morals to look up to and please think of doing a concert closer to southern middle tennessee soon. Sincerely, Matthew Yeager

Tony: I had to work all weekend installing some new hardware at my office, but I did listen to Merlefest on XM Radio, and all I can say is bravo!!!! Another fine showing from you, as expected. I just got your "Acoustics" disc on vinyl, and long live vinyl! It really sings on my Piegas! Don't let the bastards grind you down Tony. Be true to yourself, as your message so eloquently implied. My favorite recordings of Tony? Anything he that was engineered by Billy Wolf. I too am a vinyl junkie and, in my opinion, the finest recordings I have ever heard of TR were done at Bias. All my stereo equipment was home-made and runs on Tubes. I prefer a manual wind wristwatch and shoot B/W film in maual rangefinder cameras. For me, the best things in life are simple and to the point.

I spoke to you after you and Peter played the Americana stage last year. We've all experienced life on life's terms in one way or the other and I just want to say God Bless. Please come back to Jersey and play again. I hope the crowd didn't rub you guys to raw! God Bless, Brian Summers

Its hard to pick a favorite, but the one I am stuck on right now is "Original Untitled" for the Rice Brothers CD. I'm not sure if Tony is playing all the solo stuff or if Wyatt takes a break. My coolest live break by Tony was a version of "Walls of Time" with Peter Rowan. The solo starts out slow and very very smooth and then just explodes. Anyway, Tony I hope you are doing well and hope to see you soon. God Bless!

It would appear from Tony's commentary that he still has some psychological issues to deal with. Just because many admire his ability to pick a guitar, doesn't mean that everyone cares what his social views are. TR is any entertainer, just like any comic, movie star, or other personality.serves at the whim of the public. When they forget that we don't idolize them for their opinions or deep minds, the public gets bored. Unfortunately, once you get too close to them, you see the warts and realize they are just like the person in front of you in the WalMart line, except for their ability to pick a guitar.

Over this past weekend I witnessed Tony perform Shennandoah.....amazing how he works little bits of other songs into that one seamlessly. Within that 10-15 min time frame I heard segments of just about every tune from the Unit of Measure album, going into half of Manzanita and then Shady Grove before going back into Shennandoah. A master artist!! You can get another version of "Freeborn Man" from Tony's "Guitar" album.

VA - Thursday, May 08, 2003 at 10:34:47 (PDT)
Freeborn Man was on his "Guitar" album, which was released in 1973-9174. I gotta go with Manzanita. I know its a tune we've heard time and time and time again, but after hearing Tony, Sam Bush, Flux, and Darol Anger do it last year at Merlefest almost totally impromptu, it just showed me how much of a gift that song is. Common Ground from Backwaters is another of my favorites. I have heard that Tony used to play mandolin, and that there is a tape circulating of him and his brother Larry from along time ago on which Tony plays some mando. This is unconfirmed on my end, though. Hocked it about 200 times, but I always got it back,

I agree! Every time I've heard Shennandoah, live or recorded, it's amazed me. It has an improvisational feel to it and it blows my mind every time!! I also place "Me and My Guitar" at the top of my favorites list. I would also put "Freeborn Man" in my list. Does anyone know if Tony's recorded a version other than the live one? I'd love to hear it!! Everyone knows you for your acrobatic guitar style. Seeming to "paint yourself into a corner" with almost no way out during a solo only to recover masterfully. This is a talent I can only compare to one other guitar player and that's Stevie Ray Vaughn. I also have a question for Tony. Do you play anything other than the guitar?

THANKS ANDY, It has to be, wait a minute, there are too many to list. I think of one, it leads to six more. The most amazing thing I heard was the recent Shennandoah played at the Orange Peel show solo, coming across a crystal clear sound system (no feedback either)so every note would slap you in the face, reminding you that there is none better. I had never heard Tony so clear, so loud, and not missing a note. Please come back to the Orange Peel in Asheville Tony....That is my Tony highlight, I hope to repeat... Thanks Andy for the change of direction.

Tony seems to have some psychological issues he needs to resolve. Remember, Tony, that you are only an entertainer, popular because of fan support. Your comments assume lots of things. Just because you can pick a guitar does not mean your fans have any interest is your life philosophy.

As a HUGE Tony Rice fan I thought I would add a bit of info on here myself. Unfortunately, the Internet has allowed humans to start a machine, punch a few buttons, and become “whoever” or “ whatever” they want to be. One example would be young naďve children that are stalked by pedophiles that are claiming to be youngsters themselves, offering money or toys or a way out of a troubled home, just to get vital information on that child. NONE of us EVER knows FOR SURE who someone signing on the Internet really is. With this in mind, maybe someone should ask the question “Where is Tony in all of this?” Has anyone, Magic Bus or otherwise, actually talked to TONY HIMSELF and gotten a true “quote” from him about how HE feels about all of these accusations and gossip on these two web pages? I know Tony is a very busy man, but afterall this is HIS web page and I am sure he keeps in contact with those that operate it.

Yes son, I do see your point. Certain it is clear to the majority. Seems the only person who can answer a T R fans question, directly from his lips to this board poses a threat. Well some are just afraid of "somebodys stealing their thunder" thats all. We are not fools. Since I retired and moved down here, I get to concentrate on my picking. Get to concentrate on T.R. Even got to see a couple of shows so far. I guess I have spent more money buying T.R music and guitars than I should have. That might qualify me as a T.R addict. Well so be it. Young man I hope I meet you someday. In a way guess you are a hero in your own right. You come from a fine bloodline. Dont worry, T.R fans will go where they feel comfortable. Where they can get fresh info. and really connect. Keep the faith young man. I will be spending my retirement money to make sure T.R and his family stays in business for a long long time.

Tony, Have been a fan of yours for many years, you are the absolute best! Do you play in standard tuning or another? Have to know, most of the notes you play don't seem to be on my guitar. I'm sure others share my problem!! Really would like a reply concerning your tuning.

Eric from Lucasville, Ohio: I have photos and taped live performances from Jason Carter at the Mountaineer Opry from 1988-89-90. I also have the photos of his first professional job before he joined Del. If you see this, write to me at :Noflufffacts@netpen.net. Remember how Jason sang "John Hardy" and we called him "Tony Rice" because he never missed a lick? When he hit that stage, just like Tony, there was one thing on his mind ---- the music. We called him Tony Carter for about two years. Suppose Tony Rice has any idea what kind of impact he has made in the world with his music ?? JCF<>

Steve J. - If you're talking about Cody Kilby, I think he sounds a lot more like Ricky Skaggs on guitar than like Tony Rice. To me it's like listening to two people speaking different languages quite fluently, and there's no direct way to compare the two. Now people are telling me I need to listen to some Audie Blaylock, and I certainly will, but there will never be another Tony. His soulful playing seems to be born of a deep lifetime commitment to exploring what sounds good and why, and man, don't we all appreciate it!

Just want everyone to know that Jackie Smith said that Snuffy, even though he has his “ups and downs,” is doing great during this time of recovery from his surgery. She said that right now he is pretty tired as they went out for a Sunday drive. She said that he has periods of time where he is feeling very well and then he will have stages of pain but that he is working through it and is now walking a little over a mile each day and is getting stronger by the minute. The cards were received by them yesterday, and she wanted all to know that they were very “uplifting” to Snuffy and that he thanks everyone for their prayers for his well-being.

It seems that God has made sure that all the snow, sleet and rain have been pushed through this week so that Merlefest will be a dry and sunny experience like it has been the past 2 years. I am looking forward to hearing your guitar sing out again in North Wilkesboro this year - I only wish you could be performing on more stages! But I'll see you at every stage you decide to stand on. Kathi - this year we will definitely get together at the Merlefest Mall! I know there are a few stories to be shared between us before the fest ends. Here's best wishes from a struggling picker who finds great joy and endless inspiration from your efforts. Gerry

Recently an acquaintance told me that he thought a certain younger guitar player had eclipsed Tony's technique. I've listened carefully to this player's recordings, and they lack the emotional and spiritual substance that infuses Tony's work. Tony is drawing heavy water from a very deep well and it is a satisfying and refreshing drink. It must be quite a burden to keep this water freshly scented and flowing year after year. What can I offer in return? Nothing but thanks, and my cup.

I have a lot of favorite Tony solos, but a few really stand out right now to me. One is the opening solo for "Old Train" that gets Manzanita into high gear. Another is in "Jerusalem Ridge" on Unit of Measure, the one that just disappears into oblivion at the end. I also like the whole tune "Backwaters" a lot.

What a tuff topic to talk on. There are so many great solos by Tony. I've always liked the intro on Spanish Point which was included on the Bela Fleck album "The Bluegrass Sessions." There are many great solos on the Hot Dawg album. I've listened to the David Grisman album Hot Dawg many times and I've noticed that after looking inside the booklet with the CD that it credits Tony to playing violin on the song Janice, I believe. I may have my songs mixed up but I'm sure that is the one. Does anyone know if there is any truth behind this or not? I would sure love to know. Has anyone heard the recording of Stephane Grappelli, Joe Pass, and Neil Pederson? The CD I've got is Live and I can tell that it is not several concerts combined. If you would like to hear this for yourself please send me your address and I'll see about getting it too you. If you are interested please contact me by email. The address is ctrorrer@ctc.net I'm very fond of this recording myself. Has anyone else heard it? Oh, the guitar solos on Minor Swing and 16...16 are also very tasteful. The verison off Hot Dawg are the ones I'm referring too.

Tony, I remember seeing some postings a while ago with various measurements of the Bone, but I don't recall seeing the thickness of the top. I'm working an Adirondack Spruce top now on a guitar I'm building and it would be helpful to know how thick the top is on yours to get me in the ballpark. Best regards as always and love to all.
