GUEST BOOK ARCHIVE SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2003
These are the guestbook entries for September - December 2003.
to pam, i was wondering if there was any reason that tony hasent appeared at the festival of the bluegrass in lexington ky, i think the cornnets that put it on have a major lackage in ability to get a diverse and different line up each year, i was wondering if or how tony's shows with lrb are sceduled because they play there every year, and i figured i could write a letter to ask them to inquire tony for the festival. thanks CJ (happy new year to pam and tony)

CJ, I own a copy of a 1975 J.D.Crowe & the New South video from Kentucky Public Television. It's about 23 minutes in length and I bought it from Flatpicking Guitar Magazine at their Pulaski,Va. location for about 20 bucks some two years ago. It's a great videotape! Highly recommend it if they still sell it!

CJ- Try Flatpicking Guitar Magazine. I think that footage is from a show that aired on public TV in the 70s. I am pretty sure they have it in their Flatpicking Merchantile catalog.

We here at SpaceGrass Productions would like to extend our appreciation for all of Tony’s fans who chose to support him and his music throughout the year by purchasing product from his web site and/or from us directly when we were present at his shows. Many of you practiced courteous and kind patience in waiting for autographed product when Tony was on the road and when we, once again, found ourselves dealing with personal tragedies (mom’s fractured shoulder and replacement surgery, rehab and recuperation; the loss of our most precious Chihuahua, Chiquita; and the loss of a best friend’s father through cancer). Our best wishes to all of you for the Holiday Season. Love and Peace Always.

It was an honor and a pleasure to visit with Tony and Vassar at Randy Wood's place prior to a superb concert.A really unique show. An audience of around a hundred folks seated in a metal barn. delighted in the music and also the dialogue of Vassar Clements who showed great form as an orchestra director along with some of his sly humor that had both band and audience shedding tears of laughter regarding the impromptu set list. Tony's guitar work was as smooth as silk. And Randy Wood was a wonderful host. For the previous guest on this site, the bassist/vocalist is actually Warren Amberson, a shining talent on upright bass. Also Tony, the Black Mustang Cobra you drove to the show is a really smooth "SpaceGrassmobile." Looking forward to seeing you again at Live Oak in March 2004.

I had the pleasure of attending the Savannah show at Randy Wood Guitars. It was indeed one not to be missed. This is the first chance I've had to see Tony and what a chance it was. The room was very intimate and with Vassar, Scott Vestal, Tony Williamson, Carol Clements and this Amberwood fellow on Bass (sorry I can't remember his first name), it was simply an awesome show that I won't soon forget. There was video crew and mention of a DVD, so if it gets released it'll be a good one to have. Finally, thanks Tony for all the great music, your playing keeps me fired up after 25 years of pickin.

I believe the Ovation Tony used was a Custom Legend built to Tony's personal specs. The songs "Backwaters" or "Common Ground" would be good songs to hear the tone, although he uses that guitar on a lot of other albums...

Did anyone make it to the Savannah show? Was hoping to get some feedback as I am sure it was a show NOT to be missed. Tony had even mentioned to us that this is a must see show. When Tony says that, we knew those 100+ people were in for a real treat. Happy Holidays to all.

Merry Christmas Tony Rice! Tony, your music is something I listen to daily. It wouldn't be fair to venture through the season without letting you know what a joy it is to be inspired by your music throughout the years. All the best to you and yours this hoilday season! I met you up in Gettysburg a few years ago and you were kind enough to autograph a cheap guitar I had brought along for festival picking. I haven't played that thing since! God Bless!

To answer Pete's question... I was at the Holiday Inn this past Feb. to see Tony and it was the most awesome evening ever. Hands down, the best venue I have been to in a long time...maybe ever. They open up the grand ballroom and dim all the lights. The audience there seems so appreciative of the music. When Tony did Shenandoah, you could have heard a pin drop. I would highly recommend it if you've never been. Thanks Tony & Pam!

Brian, I had to chuckle at your question, but I may have some valuable insight to your boot inquiry. Tony's historical footwear has seemed to be a derivative of a Floreschiem. However, I have personally noticed him sporting an occasional Python boot. The Python boots are most likely made by Tony Lama. This is just my personal opinion though. I sure hope this helps answer your question? (o; Merry Christmas Tony!!! Merle

Dear Tony I am a young 18 year old guitar player. Thanks to you i was turned on to bluegrass around the age of 16. My dad took me to see you and Pete at the kentucky theatre and JD came out and played for the encore. Your solos that night went straight from your guitar to my heart. Your style really hit me hard, and i knew i was ready to forget about the electric guitar and become a bluegrass flatpicker. You took the time to sign for me after the show (a tony rice solo song book) and that is a time i will never forget. My dad bought me a martin like clarence's and i have adavanced greatly thanks to you and all the other great pickers that have inspired me. I have only been in bluegrass for a couple years, but long enough to know how special you guys are. Chris eldridge has spent he time to send me several helpful emails, Jim Hurst has talked with me hours after his shows, and Wayne Benson along with most every musician has taking the time to sign and give encouragement to me, thats is something you cant say for some other types of music proformers. Most importantly however i have been for ever changed muscially from the shows that i have got to see of you. Everytime i see you pick up your guitar to play i get chills because i know that i am getting to expierience the presence of my hero. Best Wishes to you and your family.... C.J. (Lex,Ky)

I know you enjoy a good bit of jazz and classical...that's yet another thing that I can thank you for is you turning me on to Oscar Peterson. Amazing. At any rate, I hope the holiday season finds you and yours in good health and better spirits! Keep pickin',

....Well lets see: Tonys zip boot you are referring to is a Stacy Adams. Mostly he wears a Lucchese and at this time he states it to be his favorite. It is more a cowboy type of boot. Most of his boots are purchased from Pergasons in Greensboro, as well as many leather coats. (ask for Cinda tell her Tony reffered you)......at home tony usually alternates between the Santa Cruz and the D-28, sometimes the Ovation....and on the question about the autograph from Tony, please contact Kathy at Spacegrass for details......Tony will be reading the message board tonight and will be able to read all of your comments. Love to all, thanks for posting.........Pam

My fave when I'm driving is Cold on the Shoulder. At home It's Plays and Sings Gordon Lightfoot. P&S Bluegrass when I get the urge to play along, and last but not least when I'm typing away on this blasted computer it's either Acoustics, Backwaters, or DGQ's self titled in the background. But everything TR does is high on my list of faves. Happy Holidays everyone.

This is not related to Tony Rice, but I venture to ask anyway: I'm about to buy an old Martin 5-18 for my son. It's in good condition and recently had a successful neck reset. Price suggestion is $1300. It seems fair, still, it's also a fair deal of money. Any opinions? Thanks!

I saw a post awhile back on Wayfaring Stranger. Can anybody point me to how to play the fast part of the song? It's only a few measures. Please????? Also, here's another much more important question. How do you find a mentor for guitar? I have none in my area that care more about music and less about themselves. Please call if you are interested being my mentor. (540) 392-3440

Forgot to add, that as far as vocals and song selections and just plain great music, Me & My Guitar is the best period! The song Hard Love on Me & My Guitar is my favorite. The way Tony blended the soprano Sax and Guitar and the rest of the instruments is just fabulous. Thanks for a beautiful record Tony. Your Buddy, Z.F.

Well this is my first time posting on here and I would like to say that I am a Tony Rice fan. I do not play guitar or any instrument but I do sing. I have been around bluegrass music my entire life and of all the times I have heard people talking about Tony and they say "Tony Rice is nothing but the best, you wont find anyone better or even close," everyone always agrees. Most of the time you hear people say Well Sammy shealor is the best on the banjo and then someone will disagree and say no Scott Vestal is... but when it comes to who plays best on the guitar, you will always hear Tony Rice's name...I agree 100%. No problem Andy. I agree that all was in jest and that this forum should be used to enhance the enjoyment of Tony's music. I have loved the guitar all my life and have admired people like Doc Watson for years. But when I first heard Tony years ago I saw how versatile the acoustic guitar could be! The fact that he has been influenced by other forms of music makes him such a versatile artist that can't be categorized or, in my opinion, equaled. No hard feelings at all, just glad to see a lot of others out there like me that love this music.

just so u all know my remarks arent in attack of those of tyrones but in attempt to stop them but my statement is that statement is that this board is to honor tony and to let him know how much we love him and his work. I agree with wes, this is a great site and the point of it is for those who share the love of tony's picking to communicate..... thanks

Agree. We shouldn't be arguing the merits of various forms of music on this guestbook. This isn't a forum. This is a guestbook to say HI to Tony, talk about his music, and for Tony to say HI to us. If you want to argue go elsewhere or do it by email.
Tyrone, the same goes for you. No one invited you to have that kind of attitude here. I would guess those kind of remarks will get deleted.

Wait a minute!!! Why automatically assume that someone is prejudice because they make a comment about rap or anything else these days? Especially when the comment is made in jest. Don't take things so seriously! Rap was the genre chosen because it is so obviously unlike flatpicking or bluegrass that it makes a good analogy. Hate never enters into it. Music of all kinds is usually a mixture of many different influences. That is one thing that makes bluegrass and its derivitives so interesting. From the African influence on the banjo to the Spanish influence on the guitar, this form of music is the American way of merging many different elements from around the world into something truly American. I have friends that like rap that tease me about bluegrass and neither side ever assumes that hatred is involved. The point is if you went to see any performance by any artist wouldn't you expect to hear their signature titles even if you saw them one hundred times?

Wow...there are some haters on this list. Just because someone's personal form of musical expression isn't your cup of tea, that doesn't mean that you can completely discount it. A lot of rappers, hip-hop producers, and DJs out there are making some really amazing music nowadays, and have for a number of years. Now, I'm not trading my six string for two turntables and a microphone, but that doesn't mean I won't listen to the products thereof. To bring it back, Tony incorporates a whole wide variety of musical influences in his playing (listening to "Drive" right now, I'm hearing some of his best ensemble playing put to record...) from jazz, to bluegrass, to what the Dead could only call "Space." IF you are limiting what you are exposed to as an artist, you limit yourself as an artist. Damned if I wouldn't like to find a way to lay a James Brown bass line to a Sam Bush mando rhythm and throw some Tony leads on top. I could pull that off I would be the leader of the Godfather Newgrass Unit. I'm fried from law school, so please pardon the rambling...

My family and friends drove 5.5 hours to hear Tony and the Unit at Oakboro. This was a great show and a wonderful venue. The music is more personal and even more enjoyable in a cozy venue like Oakboro. The instrumental expertise sure left an impression on my two sons. Oakboro - yes! We drove 180 miles from the other direction (coastal SC). It WAS magical. Saw Ronnie Simpkins in the hotel lobby in Albemarle Sunday am before we left for home and should have told him how much we enjoyed the concert, but guess I was too "in awe" to speak! Interesting to hear Tony say his Dad was born and spent early years in Gaston County, NC as that's where I'm from - would love to know what town. This was my first time hearing the Unit in concert. I knew it would be good, but it was beyond my imagination. Can't wait 'til the next time!

Another idea on learning to play solos is to learn fiddle tunes, like Red Haired Boy (If I had a nickle for the number of times I've played this song...still smiling, though), Blackberry Blossom, and Whiskey B4 Breakfast, and fiddle around with the leads. Its surprising how much you can just come up with picking the leads slowly in different positions...Keep pickin',

Arlington, VA - Friday, October 31, 2003 at 10:17:43 (PST)
to Saul , the best thing to do to learn guitar (as tony plays it) is to learn some of the tunes out of books that transcibe the versions on tony's albums, then you learn some scales, id say the pentatonic is the most important, once you get to there you are about 1/10000 of the way there but if you learn those tunes you will start to see and understand it a little more everytime you learn a new tune. Tony's style is steaped in blues so i would learn some blues (pentatonic) and jazz scales too. All of the books on the website are good, just pick one with the songs u like, or you could get a dvd which is awsome cause you can watch as you learn but they are more expensive.

I am pretty sure that Tony did buy the Martin for around $550. From what I remember of the story, it was in pretty foul shape and had not been played in a long time. Funny coincidence, Mr Hughes. Add "Technique" to YOUR "4 T's" and you have cloned Tim Stafford's theory to the critical elements of successful Guitar playing; "The 5 T's" he calls it in his workshops and instructional booklets/videos. Ever attended a Tim Stafford Workshop or seen one of his pubs? I'm guessing "Yes". If not, forgive the assumption. Best wishes Mr/Mrs Rice to you and yours....I hope to catch you in the future with my Buddy Jeff Parker at a Lonesome River Band Venue.

Here is what Artie Traum has to say about Tony Rice: "I, too, was playing pretty "hot" stuff in 1978, when I composed a tune called "Fishscale", which was not only fast, but changed time signatures twice before the bridge. One steamy afternoon, I sat down and taught it to David "Dawg" Grisman and Tony Rice at Dawg's Mill Valley home. They liked the tune and worked up an arrangement of it. The next day, when we got together to play, Tony counted off his version of the tempo. These guys took off like Apollo VII, bouncing into the stratosphere before I could find the fingering for the first riff. It was all I could do to keep up with them. When we finished the tune, they smiled. They were cool and calm; I was drenched in sweat. As hot as I thought I was, I realized that I wasn't quite ready to tackle such a tempo. Like George Foreman crumbling under a barrage of punches from Muhammad Ali, I went the distance, but they clearly had out-maneuvered and out-distanced me, and I learned a valuable lesson in the process. Rice and Grisman are among the few who do it "right". Tony's technique can be compared to a Maserati driving along a curvy road on the Amalfi Coast. You wouldn't want to drive a car like that slowly; it insults the machinery".
Walter J. Flint
Yosemite National Park, CA - Monday, October 27, 2003 at 09:19:42 (PST)
There are certain things that make a musician a "musician". And there are certain things that make a guitar player a "guitar player". When I have been approached in the past by players,I humbly give them this advice. There are four T's if you will, to being a real player. Tuning (obvious) Timing, Tone and Taste. I can't ever remember telling anyone that speed is important at all. Now, lots of players have speed. Mr. Rice is of course among those as is Sutton. Few have the taste and the timing that makes a truly great player. I can't remember hearing Charles Sawtelle play anything with blistering speed but he had the tone and the taste it took to be a real player. It all boils down to DYNAMICS. You got's 'em or you aint! Frankly, Tony is the only guitar player I know of who puts all these elements into play and uses them with the fluid precision that makes a true "guitar player" Anyone who feels differently can mail me at d281935@earthlink.net I would love to discuss the finer points of guitar with any takers

I've said it before and I'll say it again. "Bluegrass guitar (rhythm and lead) is what it is today because of Tony Rice and those people who influenced him...PERIOD." As far as the Bryan VS Tony VS Ricky etc..... It's all subjective to what you like to hear. I like them all for their vision and ability combined. My favorite current players are, of course Tony, as well as Doc, Kenny Smith, Tim Stafford, David Grier, Wyatt Rice, Audy Blaylock, Richard Bennet and Rickey Wasson. Listen to them all and draw your inspiration from those you like....there are enough clones in the world, so do your own thing.

Like I said, note rattling, whether clean or muddled, has never impressed me one iota. I fella can play 300 beats per minute and every other note go from the 1st fret to the 19th fret, played fast and clean and I would note be impressed. I would say, that's nice. When I hear Tony play, I don't normally hear the individual notes, but I listen to the group sound. That group may be an entire band or just Tony and David. But there is this common thump, pounding going on, not sure how to describe, well I guess the beat is a common word to use, but this is what I listen to. Yes I know, it's called *drive*. JD Crowe has it in his banjo. I've never heard anyone, not a single soul ever sound like Crowe. They may have the same banjo and play every single note the same, but that drive is so inherent in his style it is Godlike. That's what I hear when I listen to Rice. Perhaps that's why the New South was so tremendous. These guys had it, throw in Ricky Skaggs who has that drive in his mandolin. Makes you want to kick the walls that type of music. Everytime I put in "Bluegrass The World's Greatest Show", I want to run around and kick the windows out. Tony's break on Freeborn Man has so much drive that Jeff Gordon may want to check it out to improve his point standings. Nothing is better than capturing that drive and applying it to make the group sound. Perhaps if the other players stick around long enuff they will subconsciously pick up on it.

What would anyone want to rattle off the same notes as Bryan Sutton or Tony Rice? If you start rattling off those same notes then you will start sounding like Sutton and Rce, and there is already Bryan Sutton and a Tony Rice, so I don't see a need to rattle of the same notes.

Hey Wes, Yeah anyone can rattle off notes, but can anyone play with that blinding kick ass speed that Bryan does on Rawhide? And do it as clean and still get that good of tone playing that fast. Yeah anyone can rattle off notes, but can they rattle off the notes that Bryan Sutton is rattling off?

Seems like I got a lot of responses from the last post I left. I will add that Tony still gets the best tone of anyone around. But I still stand by my statement that Bryan is the best going right now as reflected by his 2003 guitar player of the year award at IBMA. I witnessed at merlefest a couple of years ago the changing of the guard from Tony to Bryan. They both were on the stage at the same time in a superstar jam that featured Ricky Skaggs and Bela Fleck and a bunch of other pickers. For me that night was a sad night indeed. Tony was and still is my favorite guitar player, but the proof was right before me that night.

Sutton is sick, Richard Bennett is great...but Tony holds it down on that big guitar. His rhythm playing is like Doc Watson and Kenny Burrell's love child. His leads...I mean, what can you say about Tony's leads? He goes for it everytime, sometimes nailing it, sometimes not...its that constant attempt to play something badass that makes Tony the man. His rhythm is what makes him what he is...the best bluegrass guitar player out there today.

There are way too many guitars being sold in the world to NOT come up with some great guitar players and "the next big thing" types. However, I agree with Wes. Sometimes it's not what you play that gets you noticed. Rests have equal value as notes do, right? And TR's music utilizes both to great success....thus where timing comes into play. And we all know TR's timing is second to none.

rice is the best ever, but what im saying as far as new comers, theres all different styles, to me as far as wicked playing david grier is the man, sutton is awsome clean solid melodic player the best in that division, but as far as someone that knows tony's style and plays it well and also respects it eldridge to me is the man as far as that, other names that come to mind is richard bennett, but as far as it goes tony rules them all, his driving rythm, wicked solos, and heart warming atmosphere that comes off in his shows still to this day make him the best guitarist to me and alot of pickers i think ever to play bluegrass guitar

Depends greatly upon how you define best. For me the best guitarist is one who knows how to maintain group cohesion. That is still Tony Rice in my book, no one comes close. Anyone can rattle off notes. But that has never impressed me about Rice. The real essence of his playing can be heard in the days when he played with Crowe. Give a listen to the Bluegrass Album Band records. Now THAT is cohesian, and some very tasteful and accurate solos, kickoffs, and split breaks. That's what playing guitar in a bluegrass context is all about.

I got a signature from Tony the last time I saw him at the Ram's Head in Annapolis...I also got Richard Bennett and Wyatt to sign the same stub. Its on the valued mementos shelf at home. At the same show, some guy got his boots signed by Tony...for what I think was the second or third time. Tony was great. He let me hold the '35. Felt pretty powerful to hold an instrument from which so many wonderful songs have come. Looking forward to seeing Tony and the Lonesome River Band in about two weeks at the Birchmere. Keep pickin'

His D28 isn't boomy. It is rather balanced. But yes many Martins are boomy which make them ill for studio recording purposes.

Wes, wouldn't "overly boomy" indicate use of a Martin? I'm not very familiar with Ovation guitars, so what do I know... It would certainly be fun to know!

Aspiring Guitar Picker - The solo to Wayfaring Stranger (I assume as it is on COTS) is taught on the Homespun Tapes "Tony's Choice" cd and book combo. Go to Homespuntapes.com to check it out...I don't have that one particularly, but I have a few others and can say that they are great products and have helped my playing immensely. Tony has had a long relationship with the folks at Homespun, so I hope he doesn't mind my recommending them. Wayfaring Stranger can actually lead you to some cool chords for Summertime. My dad and I have done a medley of those two for a while...minus the really fast breakdown on Wayfaring Stranger...I wish! Keep pickin...

Today I have been listening to "Me & my guitar" by Tony Rice. Tony's voice was just great and in its prime during this period; the playing of course masterful, great production, song selection and lineup with Sam, Vassar, Jerry, Wyatt, man, what a great album. I am back from the IBMA week and it was big fun. Always good to see and talk to Tony. I sat and watched the soundcheck that Tony did with the JD CRowe and the New South reunion with Jerry D, Bobby,JD and Ricky. Bobby told me he was worried that his fingers wouldn't be in shape as he hadn't played bass in two years, concentrating on other instruments. But he did fine. Then the Bluegrass Album Band soundchecked with Doyle Lawson and Bobby Hicks joining JD and Jerry and Tony. It was normal stuff, nothing spectacular. But at the IBMA Awards show all of them kicked butt. Tony threw down some riffs on Pike County Breakdown that was simply awesome. It was very sweet to be backstage and see Tony and JD and Ricky standing together during a commercial break and watching the backstage monitor as they played some footage from that 1975 Kentucky PBS concert of the New South. Needless to say, they got a kick out of how different they looked. I can't complain as I am about Jerry's age and I think I wore the same leisure suit in my high school senior picture. Anyway, Tony said that that show was almost better than the album. Kentucky PBS stll plays it on occasion. It was all a lot of fun, and I think that JD really did get a kick out of the whole night and being entered into the IBMA Hall Of Honor. ( By the way, I was lucky enough to spend some time talking to a certain someone's daughter. Oh my gosh, beautiful. I think I am in love :) All in fun. Great time. Derek H www.gritz.net

Sat here and hummed and hawed a bit whether to post a question. I made such a fool of myself last post about that darned “Doodle” song which wasn't Rice – but that Crary man. Blushing in the dark – though the upside is you made me a Poster Child so I can walk tall as I walk in with a question. .......I’ve had a wonderful afternoon (aren’t Sunday’s the best?) listening to Doc Watson’s “Legacy” and then Tony on “Blake and Rice”...I’ve always been a great fan of Doc Watson, and admire his work. ( I "met" Doc first at age 11. Tony came a bit later. Admire both equally.) And I wondered - if Mrs. Rice is reading and had time to ask? - what Tony’s thoughts are of Doc? To play with – to listen to. A Great is a Great, and I’d like to ask another Great how it was to work with him and what Doc's work has meant to him professionally and personally. We live in a world with few heroes. Doc is one of mine - hence the question for someone like Tony, who’s opinion I’d respect. Many thanks Mrs. Rice. If you have the time. Maybe hold Tony’s beloved coffee cup at arms length and lure him to a reply, if you please - and won't get bitten? :-) Best, Freesia

You guys who have seen him play Shenandoah live so much might be able to answer a question for me. I've seen it once and would pay a good bit to see it again. My question is, doesn't he vary it somewhat each time with improvisation and experimental licks? I noticed a big difference between the version on Unit of Measure and the one on the DVD lessons. I was thinking that was part of the magic, to hear exactly what he did with it this time or that time. I remember a lot of fantastic rock performances in the early 1970's that were never really duplicated after just one time. Here's a guy that can conjure it up all over the nation, and he's probably the only person who could pull off something like that. I think it's going down as an all-time high point in the history of bluegrass.

This message is to John Smith. Why don't you find another site to go and piss people off on? I've heard Tony play Shenandoah many times, and each time is different. I can understand this is your opinon, but opinons are like ass wholes, everybody has one. Also, John Smith, if you would like to meet some place, sometime, I would be happy to kick your ass for coming on a site that is about Tony's music, and saying how tired you are of it. If you are tired of his music just take a break from it.

For someone who has never seen TR play live before, and has paid a hard earned dollar to see him live. I believe he or she is entitled to hear the famed Shenandoah. An artist's obligation is usually to entertain the audience, be it ever repetitive as it may get. But playing something like Shenandoah as improv as it may be allows TR some liberties to keep it fresh and new. Which is lucky, since it ain't the same old expected song that everyone knows and the way of how it goes...I.E. Stairway to Heaven...Everyone by now most likely knows it by heart. But, in the words from Hot Rize' live CD where they say for those 9 of you who have never seen us before, we are Hot Rize...etc, etc. Thanks TR for still playing live and not sitting back living off our money like some pop stars do. Hats off, and when the day comes I finally get to see you live, I'd be glad to hear how you feel like playing Shenandoah that night. (providing you come up this far north...lol) Havi

Since this is a "guest book" and not a "forum" I understand your point Sean. If I was fortunate enough to be earning my living off of other peoples entertainment dollars while simutaneously doing something I love, I would welcome "constructive" feedback. To me it's not so much WHAT he said, it's HOW he said it.

the simple fact is that this web site is not for negative opinions about Mr. Rice or his music, there are lots of forums on the web that would be happy to hear what someone likes or does not like, but this is not one of those sites.I get sick of hamburgers from time to time, I don't call burger king and tell them to change to soy meat burgers,I just stop eating them for a while.

I don't agree with the way john smith stated his opinion on how it "makes him sick" but when I was seeing Tony a lot I was getting tired of it myself. While it's undeniably a beautiful piece of music, especially in the hands of TR, it does get stale to some of us who are fortunate enough and supportive of TR enough to see him as much as we can. Before the Texas Trio with Tony at the Carolina Theater show in G'boro NC a few years back, I had the pleasure of meeting Tony's mom and I suggested in a very nice way that it would be nice if T would work up another solo piece like Shanandoah. I said that many folks see T quite often throughout the year and it would be nice to hear him showcase his talants on a different piece.

The best line up for the unit I think, was with Tony, Wyatt, Jimmy and Mark Schatz on bass. I saw them one time at Myrtle Beach SC and they flat out tore it up.

In response to a recent post regarding the Unit... In the early 90's and for several years anyone who had the pleasure of seeing the "unit" saw Tony,Wyatt,Jimmy, & the Simpkins brothers. Although I believe that the only recording they are all really together on is Unit of Measure. During this span, I saw the "Unit" probably at 20 or more shows and that specific group of men had a chemistry that was unmatched. Tony was undeniably the leader, but the rest of the guys rounded everything out. When I hear the "Unit", these are the guys that will always come to mind. Also, Kathi I guess you can answer this, once upon a time, there were some pretty cool "Tony Rice Unit" case stickers. Are these the ones mentioned below, and are they still available? and Thanks again Tony & Pamela for the great music....

Saw Rice and Rowan last week here in Columbus with Ralph Stanley and for a quick report I will say that it was spectacular. The smoothest playing from Mr.Rice I have heard in several years. He and Rowan appeared to enjoy themselves as much onstage as we did listening. And of course Dr.Ralph still can get it done! Highlight was a chilling Wayfaring Stranger and of course Shenandoah. A friend who attended with us was not as familiar with the wide range available to a guitarist of Rice's caliber and was genuinely touched at his solo spot. She said she always thought the guitar as a "rugged" instrument and never imagined that it could sound so beautiful. I immediately directed her to the record table to pick up River Suite For Two Guitars. Also at the record table we had a chance to meet Kathi and tell her what a great job she is doing on the website. Mr.Rice, I have loved your music for years and years and let me say "thanks" for everything. Love to see the entire Unit make it up this way one of these days. May God Bless all that you do.

I have to add my comments on the "Released" album by Todd Phillips. It is a must have for any Tony fan. The other entry was correct in saying that Tony's break on the title cut is UNBELIEVABLE. It is one of the most incredible and impossible sounding breaks ever. It has to be one of the all-time greatest solos in history,,,in ANY kind of music. That album is recorded pefectly too, sonically and tonal wise.

For anyone who's interested, I figured out another high vocal part for "Carolina Star" that you can add above the regular tenor part. It starts one step above the first tenor, then moves to the tenor's original note when that part moves. Then it goes down on the last syllable of "Carolina." As far as I can tell it doesn't clash with the baritone or anything else. If you're doing that song, anyone without a part can try that. I think it sounds really good.

In reference to Todd Phillips "Released" this album was released in 1984 on the Varrick label. I have mastered the record to cd from a brand new album and it sounds absolutely amazing. I agree with the other posts in that TR really plays his ass off and sounds great stretching out in a very jazzy context. If any of you out there would like a copy I will trade a cd of "released" for any Tony Rice show that is live and recorded before 1987. These shows must be from sounboard recordings only and be of good quality. I am especially intersted in The "acoustics" "Mar West" "Still Inside" and "Backwaters" period. And, yes I already have the July 17, 1982 show from McCabes. I will do trades only for this disc and and will not sell it for money so please do not ask. I'm also looking for a cd of The Bluegrass Suspects Album and the Greatest Bluegrass Show on Earth Album?, the one that TR won the Grammy for. Contact wflint@inreach.com if interested.

Sorry for so many posts, but another album I think Tony absolutely burns it up on, is David Grismans, Dawg Grass/Dawg Jazz. They are two tunes on that album, 14 miles to Barstow and Dawgy Mt. Breakdown that are unreal. 14 Miles to Barstow is about the fastest and cleanest I have ever heard Tony do, or anyone else for that matter. Dawgy Mt. Breakdown also has Earl Scruggs playing banjo on it.Highly Recommended.

I forgot to add, that I paid $100.00 for that album. There used to be a guy that went around to all of these bluegrass festivals by the name of Charlie Chase and he had the album on display and I had to have it, only because it featured Mr.Tony Rice and that was the only album that I did not have, that had Tony on it. About a week later, I seen it at another festival for $15.

I have the Todd Phillips record "released" Its been a long time since I have listened to it, but I always thought Tony did a great solo on Fat Boy. But all the guitar solos on that album are fantastic. Come to think, I have never listened to the album from begining to end, I always skipped to Tonys solos, thanks Tony.

Personally, I have never understood what constitues the difference between a Tony Rice CD, and a Tony Rice Unit CD. Its not like there is a particular group of musicians that makes up the "The Unit". Its also not that the Unit recordings are jazzy, and the TR recordings are bluegrass. There doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Mar West is a "Unit" recording, yet so is Manzanita. Huh? I just dont pay any attention to any of it. I consider all of the "TR" recordings, all the "Unit" recordings, and all of the "Bluegrass Album Band" recordings to all be simply "Tony Rice" recordings. Now that he, unfortunely, cannot sing, I think of the Rice, Rice, Hillman, Peterson recordings to be Tony Rice recordings, with whoever is singing lead to be taking Tony's place as the lead singer. I lump them all together. (and I cant wait for this thing to be cured, and we can hear Tony sing again. Not giving up hope!) Tony is "the Man" regarding this style of guitar, imo. He has taken this style to places it had never gone before, and with grace and humility. Cant wait to catch him again sometime down the road. Mike

Finally opened my wallet and bought Tony's 2 DVD set on Homespun. What a great way to spend a couple hours. Just like having the old boy hanging out and picking in my family room. Anyone need a "Rice" fix for today? I know i have got to have at the very least 1 a day. Well here is one for you.Go to your record bin and pull out Todd Phillips " Released" and play the title cut. take a good long listen to the 1rst and 2nd breaks that Tony plays. They are sure to make you scream !! I have had this recording for I think 12 years, and Tony's 2nd break on this song ( released) may be one of his best ever( and that is saying a big mouth full) it is simply put FREAKIN UNBELIEVABLE. Thanks again for making another day in my life better.I hope you one day completely know what your gift has meant too all your fans and how much better a place this world is because of your music.

Hi Tony~Just a note to say "thank you" for a wonderful nite of music under the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain sky in the "Bowl" at Lime Kiln! No offense to Peter or Tony G...but, you don't need any help...you command the attention of anyone within hearing distance. (We were all so mesmerized...didn't you hear the crickets last nite?) You could have played "Shenandoah" all nite...it was so AWESOME!!! Thank you for being so down-to-earth, for talking to your fans, and letting some of us hit you up for pictures! It really hit me when my best friend told me I had had my picture taken with a "legend"!! How true!!! For those of you going to the IBMA: As many of you know, there were two sides to the life of musician John Hartford. There was his brilliant music side and his riverboat captain side. I was lucky enough to know John a little and our many conversations were always wonderful and interesting. On the Friday, October 3rd, during IBMA week, on the 1914-built riverboat The Belle Of Louisville, a tribute concert/cruise will take place and it will be great. First of all, the proceeds of the cruise will benefit two cancer centers, one in Louisville and one in Nashville. As you all know, John died from a long fight with Lymphoma in June of 2001, and his wife died from lung cancer 8 months later on his birthday in December of that year. The music line-up for the cruise will be sweet. First up will be old time musician Leroy Troy out of Goodlettsville, TN who has a record out on Rounder. The old timer that taught Leroy on banjo learned it from Uncle Dave Macon, that is his lineage. Next up will be banjo great and Bill Monroe alumnus Tony Ellis. Bob Carlin has brought together the John Hartford Repetoire Company for this concert. The band members of the John Hartford Repetoire Company are folks that all played with John at some point through the years; Bob Carlin, Mike Compton, Chris Sharp, Matt Combs, and Mike Shatz. Other guests will be Jamie Hartford, John's son and a musician in his own right playing with Billy Joe Shaver right now, and my good friend bluegrasser Katie Laur from here in Cincinnati. The cruise will leave port at 10am Friday morning and will come back into port at 1:30 later that day. The IBMA and Dan Hays has been more than helpful with this excursion. More information can be found at www.belleoflouisville.com. Two years ago I wrote an article about the time I spent with John Hartford and I have given it away free to whoever has wanted to publish it. As a result it has been published in England, in the British BLuegrass News, and in Australia as well, and originally in Gritz. Through the article and after Job's death I have gotten to know a bunch of John's friends from the riverboat side of his life, and it is quite an interesting fraternity. www.gritz.net/FTRjhartford.html Here is a good chance to hear the friends of Hartford play some wonderful music as you float down the mighty Ohio River on the 1914-built Belle Of Louisville, and all the proceeds go to charity. By the way, they are making up a very impressive poster for the cruise, which will be printed in Tennessee by the very famous Hatch Show Print Company. The Hatch Show Print Company was who printed up all those Bill Monroe playbills and other wonderful posters for the last 150 years. It will go for 10 bucks and will be a real collectors item, all for a great cause. The Hatch Show Print Company started printing posters in 1879; www.cmt.com/news/display/1476937.jhtml Hope to see you on the river. And before and after the cruise you still have time to check out the concert lineup at the IBMA, as well as the 24/7 pickin'. Hope to see you there! Thanks!!!!!! Derek H

From Salt Creek to Gold Rush, with everything in between, the Unit was better than anyone could have imagined. On Friday, Sept. 12, The Tony Rice Unit performed in Asheville, NC at the Grey Eagle Music Hall. It was by far the best acoustic show I have seen all year. I am not so lucky to have seen the original unit with the likes of Sam Bush and Bela Fleck, but with Wyatt, Simpkins and Bryn Bright, in my mind, it couldn’t have been better. Tony was beaming with energy and excitement. It was evident to the entire audience that Tony liked being on top with his on show. At one point Tony humorously announced that they were there to rock all night and thrash the place when they were done. Tony was conversing and joking with audience members throughout the night which seemed to personalize the event, including his comment about where he got his old martin box. “I told my dad to go down to Sears Roebuck and get the best damn guitar they had.” Tony was prepared for the night and so was his audience. The crowd was exceptional. The only time you couldn’t hear a pin drop was after a lead was taken; a few seconds of uproar, and then back to silence. The songs chosen for the night flowed extremely well. All instrumentals, showcasing each player at times, exemplified why the Unit is the hottest act playing these days. Set I featured such favorites as Stoney Lonesome, Wyatt Rice’s Crazy Creek, Last Thing On My Mind, Billy in the Low Grass, and a Blackberry Blossom that will be remembered for years to come. Set II began with a tune familiar to all pickers alike, Red Haired Boy. Tony introduced the next song; I am a Pilgrim, by giving credit to Clarence White’s rendition and saying that Wyatt plays it better than anyone else alive. After Beaumont Rag, the band left Tony alone on the stage for his trademark Shenandoah. This is the piece that I most desire to see Tony perform, next to Manzanita. To my surprise and delight Tony placed Manzanita teases in the middle of Shenandaoh. To be quite honest with you I would have paid the twenty dollar ticket just to see this and would have been completely satisfied. It was absolutely the pinnacle of all Tony performances I have ever seen. The rest of the Unit came back to the stage to shred through Shady Grove and the rest of the set, which included Devlin, Gold Rush, and Day Break in Dixie. The band encored with Dusty Miller and left the crowd to ponder on the magic they witnessed and to wonder when on earth they will be able to see the Tony Rice Unit again.

I just got back from the Chapel Hill concert, and the earlier reviewers from the Asheville concert are not exaggerating. This show was Tony at his finest! The Unit is a strong ensemble, and Tony's guitar weaves in and out, drawing out the best from the other players and himself. And the 10-15 minute solo spot he performed was beyond my ability to describe. The man is at (another) peak, and he must be seen to be believed. Thanks Tony for meeting the fans after the show. It was an honor to meet and talk with you. thanks also to Kathi and Steve Fox. Great to finally meet you after all these emails.

I must say that without a doubt that Tony is the King of the Acoustic guitar. A lot of aspiring guitar players get caught up in Tonys left hand and all the neat jazz chords, but I must confess that I have never seen a more perfect right hand than that of Mr. Tony Rice. The tone he gets is the best EVER! God Bless You and Your Family Tony.

I heartily second "blown away" and Pete's comments about the Grey Eagle performance last night. Tony Rice is EASILY the most underrated and overlooked musician in the U.S. today---in any genre. He is at his peak, and I was humbled (and fortunate) to hear him in concert, a scant fifteen feet away. This was a near-religious experience. Thank you, Tony, for being there!

The setlist would absolutely blow your mind. Anyone looking for the intricate stuff would be amazed. He had some techniques I have never see him execute. Wyatt, Rickie, and Bryn all played a huge roll in the show which added even greater depth. WOW.

I generally avoid most web sites dedicated to musical artists, but I have to say that coming across this today was a pleasant surprise. One of the things I admire most about Mr. Rice's musicianship is his avoidance of excess, and his humility in allowing the voice of the music be heard. Tony, I thank you and I wish you peace.

Johnny Cash; In 1979, the year I started at the University of Cincinnati, Johnny Cash, Eli Wallach and Brenda Vaccaro filmed a made-for-TV movie here in town called The Pride Of Jessie Hallam. In it Johnny played a man who was a coal miner from the age of 14 who, after being widowed, came to the big city of Cincinnati out of Kentucky and had to deal with the fact that he was illiterate. I found out that the film crew as working in the Mount Adams section of the city so, in-between classes, I went up there to watch them do their craft. They had been in town for a while so there was not a lot of people up there, mostly because it was a weekday and everybody was at work themselves. I asked if I could watch for a while and they said yes, just go around the back of the set as to not interrupt any scenes. As I walk around a big bus I lookup and there is Johnny Cash sitting in a chair having his makeup done for an upcoming scene. I am completely surprised and, without having time to think about it, I give him a silent nod and a wave. Even though the makeup artist was working on him he looked me right back in the eye and gave me that classic Johnny Cash head nod. I did not break stride but continued to walk around the bus. It happened so quick and unexpectedly, yet I was on cloud nine. continued below;

Let me say this, as I watched him do a couple of scenes and got to meet him and everything, his presence and charisma was as powerful and authentic as described by anyone else you have ever heard talk about it. The guy was the real deal. The film crew moved the crew and equipment to film a scene at the local bus station, and it was a ‘going away’ scene that featured Johnny with Eli Wallach. They did about two or three takes, and then on the fourth take Johnny and Eli hit the scene in the kind of magical way that had the crew and everybody present applauding at the end of it. The director, Gary Nelson, knew he had his take and he was thrilled to call it a wrap. To see that moment live was priceless, and I have never forgotten it. What was cool about Johnny was his ability to get real with the music. I, of course, grew up listening to "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line" and as kids we all knew the words to "Boy Named Sue" because it gave us a reason to cuss. I also have an album of his where all of the songs are recorded from the native American point of view called Bitter Tears: Ballads Of The American Indian. On it is a song called “Custer” where he points out that what was a victory for the Indians was called a massacre by the rest of the world. "Now I can tell you buster, that I ain't a fan of Custer, but the General, he don't ride well anymore. Custer split his men, well (laugh) he won't do that again, and the General he don't ride well anymore!" continued below;

Holy smokes folks, if you have not seen Johnny's latest video of the song "Hurt", try and see it tonight on TV. Haunting and, once again, as real as it gets. There was a clip of an interview shown today that Johnny gave to Barbara Walters years ago. In it she asks him if he is going to heaven or hell. Johnny says, "I'm going to heaven." "Are you sure?" Walters asks. "Yes. I've already seen enough of hell." There is no doubt that Johnny went through a lot in his life, a lot of it his own fault, which he freely admitted. But you always knew that in there deep was a good man, a great songwriter, and somebody lucky enough to find a wife that saved him from the depths of despair. June said this about the two of them in an interview she did in 1999 when Johnny was bad sick; "You see, we're OK; even if we died and went to heaven, we're all right. I've always walked with thousands of angels. They've put me on their wings and they've carried me." Four months later, they are together again. RIP, Johnny cash Derek Halsey Gritz Magazine

For those of you that heard about David Grisman's prized Gilchrist Mandola being stolen in Montana recently, it appears he has received it back via UPS with a note stating "it was found in the parking lot"?? No other details as of yet. I posted it here because I thoroughly enjoy the work Tony did with DGQ.

Regarding the Jimmy Gaudreau question. Yes, Jimmy is keeping busy playing with Robin and Linda Williams. He plays mandolin fills and breaks, but with few exceptions is not singing. He is also performing as half of a duet with Moondi Klein. I have seen them a couple times and they keep things interesting with a very improvisational and spontaneous format.

Bryn Bright is the bassist for Two High String Band from Texas. Her husband, Billy Bright, plays mandolin and both Geoff Union and Brian Smith play guitar. From what I understand, this band will be playing before the Unit. Since Ronnie Simpkins has shows scheduled with the Seldom Scene, Bryn will play along with Tony, Wyatt and Rickie Simpkins to complete the Unit for both shows on Friday (Grey Eagle in Asheville)and Saturday (Community Church Coffee House in Chapel Hill). I hope this is clear enough for you. If not, feel free to call me at 866.866.9291 or contact the venues.

Jimmy has been playing with Robin and Linda Williams and their Fine Group- at least as of a few months ago. Since this is Tony's site, let me add that I was just listening to his break on 'Round Midnight on the Gator Strut CD. It is fantastic.

Since we're talking about the Unit, I was wondering if anyone knows what Jimmy Gaudreau is up to these days? Is he playing with someone else and is not able to play with the Unit? I think he's a great mandolin player. Just curious.

An update on the Unit discussion... Trish Galfano of the Community Church Coffee House in Chapel Hill contacted me today and informed me that Ronnie Simpkins would NOT be with the Unit this Saturday as he has a show scheduled with the Seldom Scene. Instead, Bryn Bright will be playing bass. If any of you have heard her play with Old & In the Gray and with the Texas Trio (Peter, Billy and Bryn) along with Tony, you will know that she is an incredible bassist.
