I have been a long time fan of Tony's for years. His music was one of the first things to inspire me to play bluegrass music in the first place. His pulls every note directly from his soul. It has been my dream to meet him and pick with him ever since I began playing bluegrass. I don't have a million questions to ask. I'd just like to pick with him just once. Tony your music touches the mind and engulfs the listeners soul.I constantly pray to God to restore your voice like it once was. God bless you for being such an inspiration to so many people.

Hi all, the neck may be original, but the fingerboard is not. The pickguard is from a japanese man who offered it to Tony as a friendly gesture. Any other info may be found in Carol Wrights article, and on flatpick.org...I think. But mysteries of such instruments are what make them of great interest. Oh, yeah, and don't forget the BB hole in the Bone, too. Pick on...P.S. can't wait til Chicago next month.

Steve, I must apologize for the misinformation. The neck itself, the mahogany, IS original. I believe Todd Phillips put a new fretboard on it. The headstock is a mystery though. So you are correct in saying that the neck itself is original, or so believed to be.

I have followed Tonys carear for alot of years and that is the first time I have ever heard the story of another neck.

An original neck would be the D28 neck that was sold with the guitar in 1935. Thus the neck is not original. Tony has answered this in so many interviews, I think on his video, in Flatpicking Mag, and even the Big Book Of Bluegrass. And other places as well.

Some one asked if the guitar might have been made in 1933, the answer is no.. Martin guitars all have serial numbers and You can date them by getting a martin serial# card. Tonys guitar has the serial# 58957 the last number stamped in 1934 was 58679, so Tonys guitar was made very early in 1935. I know a guy that has a 1940 D-28 heringbone and he insists that it was made in 1939, but he is wrong. Some people just dont know how to use the serial# card.

The neck is original, but I think the headstock veneer was replaced, hence the missing logo. I know the keys are not the correct ones for the period, even though they are "original" from the time Clarence owned it. I know the neck has been shaved down a lot. I have heard some people say that some necks from 1935 was thin, maybe so, but they wasnt as thin as a telecaster neck. And as Tony has stated, the finger board was replaced with a gretsch finger board. I also noticed on Tonys new dvd that the binding around the top is not as yellow than the binding around the back, you can really tell this from the side shots.

I am wondering if there are any Tony Rice fans besides myself who are hoping Tony will do a music video for television such as CMT.(?) It seems Bluegrass is finally getting some air play with bands such as NickelCreek, Alison Krauss, and Del McCoury. What about something from one of the Finest of Fine?

The neck, is in fact, original. There is speculation, however, that it may have been a mis-matched neck, possibly from an OM or a 000 size. This would explain the small neck shape, despite any minor modifications that may have occurred over the years.

The neck is not orginal. Thus no logo.

Re: The condition of the 'Bone...there are numerous articles about it, both on the web and in magazines. A cursory search should find you a few interesting stories of one of the world's most important instruments.

The logo issue-- I'm sure it would have to be just honest wear. All D-28's of that vintage, 1935, have logos. They also have fretboard inlays as well. That guitar is NOT a prototype for anything other than the modern day reproductions of that guitar. It is your standard D-28 from 1935, bearing in mind that the standards of 1935 included herringbone features, different bracing, and different wood. Simply put, all sentimentality aside, it is a relic that survived only by radical changes that were performed to preserve the instrument.

Hello to everyone out there.I have questions.Did anyone ever find out why Tony's old Martin d-28 has no C.F. Martin EST.1833 script logo on the headstock.Possibly could this have been a prototype for a new model at that time? I hear different people say it is a 1935 or 1933.What year is it exactly? If you can help us all out thanks. Justin P.S. Wes thanks for the Tony Tab page. I like that!!

I whole-heartedly agree that taking such a find axe to Merlefest is leaving a lot to chance. The weather can be unpredictable, going from 70 and sunny to rain and 45 in the same day, there are always a ton of people just hanging out and checking out the scene, and, if you're into it, the late-night jams at the camp sites can often include some adult beverages in respectable quantities. For such a fine instrument, I would at least get a solid case to take and leave her in while you're not playing...lots of guys with thoroughbreds schlep around the hard cases because of the extra protection. My dad leaves his 150th Anniversary HD-28 at home and takes his OTHER HD-28 to the festival...he calls that one his "beater." What can you say, man...the guy deserves his toys....god knows he works for them. Protect the axe. I assume you want that guitar with you a lot longer than you'll be at Merlefest. Keep pickin', and enjoy Merlefest (can't go....darn law school finals!)

Tony's performance at the Belcourt Theater in Nashville this Saturday, March 20th, was outstanding. He and Wyatt were just meant to pick together. They stay out of each other's way on stage. Wyatt is huge himself. The Waybacks opened for The Tony Rice Unit and they blew me away also. James Nash is also a great guitarist. Tony's assistant, Kathi Fox is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met. He should be proud to have her working with him. This was only the 2nd time I have heard Tony Rice live, but have collected and tried to play his music for almost 20 years. He's as smooth as Tupelo honey...........

CJ, There are some cases called "Gator Bags" or something like that. Check out the Goldtone Site...I believe they offer that soft case with their instrument line. FWIW, I wouldn't take a box as fine as an LSV to a Festival of that magnitude in a soft case. It just begs of a horror story. Good Luck.

Just picked up your 2 DVD set. Haven't viewed it yet. I have (nearly) all your albums and most of your VHS/Cassette instructional material and Video Collections. I get these various things more for the chance to see/hear your ideas and guitar work than for the Instructional aspect. I pick quite a bit, and you are a main influence in my style, but I'm no clone. (I think there are enough TR clones in the world already!) Just wanted to say thanks in advance for what I'm sure will be a great video lesson and another chapter in your phenomenal career. Looking forward to seeing/hearing you again as well as the release of your Biography. All the best to you, Pam, your family and friends. Be sure and tell Jeff Parker "Howdy" for me next time you play with LRB.

Hi Tony.I am 15 years old and I play guitar,5-string banjo, bass, mandolin,& a little dobro.I have been listening to you ever since I was born.My dad is probably one your biggest fans.He has most of your albums. My dad got on autograph of yours on a $1 US bill.He got it laminated and in a frame. You autographed it in 2001 at Thomas Point Beach.Dad got Fern Maillet to get you to autograph it because I guess it was, if you wern't a performer you wern't aloud behind the stage.I remember at the show in Thomas Point when you were playing with Peter Rowan, you took this one break and it was for 5 minutes at least, and 2 very well respected musicians from the maritimes of Canada, Danny Maillet and Scott Delhunty were sitting there in awe, as you took your break. And I can tell you they are no slouch on anything they pick-up.It was amazing when you did that break! After that show I came up and talked to you when you were in your Lincoln Town Car, you were just pulling away and I knocked on your window and you rolled your window down and I said, awesome show Tony.and I will never forget what you said to me, you said Thanks son, sorry I got to split.I was playing very little guitar then, but something happened that moment I went and talked to you, I got inspired and I start playing like crazy and I haven't stopped and I never will stop playing.I know you probably get this all the time but you have know idea how much you have (and still do) inspire me.You are truly an inspiration!I hope to get to see another one of your shows again, and hopefully get to have a jam and talk to you. Tony. I'm one of the thousands of guys who grew up with tony rice licks. I play the mando, but take great satisfaction in learning a tony lick that is "playable" on the mando. You're the greatest man. My all time favorite guitarist. If I'm not listening to one of your cd's, then I'm listening to one of Bela's or Sam's or Jerry's that's got you on it. YOU'RE THE MANNNN!!!

I know this does not contain any Tony Rice info, but I feel this should be posted. This is mainly for folks in North Carolina. I'm just trying to help out a friend with this message. Riley Baugus had his car broken into and his banjo and fiddle stolen Sunday night in Winston-Salem. A description of the instruments and Riley's 411=20 are below. If you happen to be going by your local pawn shop, please stop by and take a look. Please take time to read about these instruments. Detailed List of Items taken from Riley Baugus Vehicle at 431 Duke Street,= =20 Winston-Salem NC on February 29, 2004 Hand Made banjo with no back. Has 11B006 inside as serial number. Signed inside with Riley Baugus signature. "Riley Baugus" burned in back of peghead. Made in October 1996. Neck is cherry and rim is maple and walnut, both stained to a medium brown color. This banjo is one of a kind and has been with me for many years. I have done numerous projects with the banjo including music for the film, Cold Mountain. In the banjo case are Riley Baugus postcards, a Gerber tool in a pouch(like a Leatherman), and various banjo related items. The banjo has 18 brackets for holding on the head and a hand made leather strap approximately 1 inch wide. One violin with two bows in a rectangular case. The case is rectangular in order to hold two violins. It is black and has a sticker on the top, which reads, "Way Out." The violin is orange. No serial number or makerlabel. The violin has no chinrest attached. One bow was a standard classical style bow, dark brown in color. The other bow is a Baroque style bow. It is medium brown in color. The stick has a groove which runs the length of the bow down the top. It would be considered quite strange looking. It has a long pointy tip. The frog is made of the same wood as the bow stick. It is made from Snake wood and looks very much like a snake pattern. Also inside the case are strings, some CD=B9s, bridges, fingerpicks, rosin, a purple folder containing song lyrics. There is a paper Skeleton Mask inside the case. Thanks for all your help, Riley Baugus 336-744-0381 home 336-391-2964 cell

Bud, saw your Groundhog Day post and wanted to say "thanks" for getting me started on Tony's music back in 1979. My first listen to Manzanita, along with the day in 1985 I got my SC Rice signature Brazilian, are among the major musical highlights of my life thus far. My only regret about Tony is that his discography isn't 10 times bigger and his concert tour doesn't reach down into Arkansas. But hey, if you're on I-40 and/or I-30 on your way to California, Little Rock is a good stopping-off place with several nice venues. Cheers, Bill

Brad, Thanks alot! I knew some of you die hards on here would know. I've been looking for that song for awhile. Our band plans to release it on our next cd project. Just trying to find some good songs that aren't recorded/played to death and still have that kind of theme! In my book of historical bluegrass singers, the first page has Tony on it and the second has lester flatt. Those are the two most influential singers to me. They certainly deserve the credit as being most recognizable in bluegrass with the likes of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, John Duffy, etc.,etc.,etc. Tony is of course first on my guitar page of the book too! Heh-heh.

Scott P.,,,I don't know if this is the version you're speaking of, but Tony sings "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart" on a Bill Emerson CD from 1992 titled, "Reunion." It groups Bill along with various singers and guitar players with whom he's worked through the years. I believe the Cd is out of print now, but you might check amazon.com and see if anyone is selling a used copy.

Hey Tony, We saw you at the Asheville show. It was the first time since the "Be here now" show years ago. My wife was so thrilled to meet you. I have to say you play better than ever. We know you were in a hurry after the show, so thanks so much for taking time out to talk to me(the bald guy) and introducing yourself to my wife(the tall blonde). I've been a fan for 25 years and will always be a fan. Your the best! Rick & Kelly

Hey Tony, Looking forward to seeing you at Merlefest again this year. We are there every year & listen to every set you do. My favorite albums (I have them all.) are "Me & My Guitar" and "Native American". "Summer Wages" is a song I never get tired of listening to. Best wishes to you & your family.

Yeah. No need in wasting any more time on who's who. Let's just get back to talking about what Tony has done. BTW-Anybody know which album Tony sings "We'll meet again Sweetheart" on? I've been looking for that one with no success. J.S.-yeah man that's cool. We'll catch up again soon and maybe you can teach me some hot Rice-like licks. You missed a killer show in Asheville. Talk about owning the fretboard.I almost had to stop looking. There were some killer moments there that every aspiring guitar player needed to see! peace

You know, its funny....every couple of months or so, some dispute comes up as to who Tony is better than...I'm waiting for the Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page comparisons...Unfortunately, Jerry's technique is most likely not best represented by his playing on "The Pizza Tapes" He was on the downward slope. This was a chance for Grisman to bring together two of his friends to share a commone space...a pure jam session, with roles pretty undefined, playing quality left up to serendipity to a large degree...and a whole lot of fun for the participants, which was the most important thing. The three clearly had fun playing with each other. That being said, his "Jerry" licks sound a little better on the Bone. Keep pickin'

I wasn't even comparing Jerry's playing to Tony's to begin with. It was Clarence and Tony that I was referring to and then asked if Jerry was playing Tony's guitar at the end of the record. I don't consider myself a "deadhead" and don't even own a Grateful Dead album. I come from a blues & bluegrass background but, I suppose that you are more worthy to play Tony's guitar than Jerry Garcia. You might need to open up your ears and realize that these guys (including Jerry) are and were professionals and legends to many people in the music world. They wouldn't be where they are if they didn't have something to give us musically. You have your opinions and I'll have mine and we'll all be fine. I tend to have a little more respect for legendary musicians or anybody that records with Tony?!?!?!?!

They have/had 2 different styles. Jerry was the best at jamming/space and Tony is the best at spacegrass, period. (though the term spacegrass is a derivative of the Grateful Dead's "space" jams that they did at each concert).

Someone once told me "Jerry Garcia was the king of noodling. Sooner or later he'd play something decent." Comparing Mr. Rice's performances, even on a bad day, to Mr. Garcia best performance on a good day? Well, it's the difference between a good minor league pitcher and Roger Clemons.

Re Scott Patrick's comments about Garcia: If there is one salient feature about the Pizza Tapes it's that Jerry Garcia is hardly in the same league as Tony Rice when it comes to acoustic guitars. Yes, Tony graciously passed the antique over to Garcia, who proceeded to attack the strings like a tone-deaf garage band neophyte. (Oh no, here come the Deadheads in defense....) And Jeff Dodson, you're using far too much correct punctuation for this board!

Crowds are uncontrollable sometimes....I thought the crowd at Asheville was quite controlled especially when I recognized the waft of air that blew through the joint just before Peter told the story of the mexican air force. Wonder what prompted that song for the encore? Made me want to join up?!?! One thing is for certain. You'd could never tell for one minute that the sound wasn't set up very good on stage based on how well they played. That's a true sign of a well seasoned group who can play well even if they can't hear each other that well. Kudo's to all who performed under the all too common uncapable soundman circumstances. Question for Tony. At the end of the Pizza tapes when you, David, & Jerry were discussing your tone vs. Clarence's tone, was Jerry noodling on The Bone? If so, that was cool. Not everyone can say that Jerry noodled on their guitar! Good Stuff. As Jerry said, "moments of blinding brilliance"

Crowd control is always disheartening when you have people there who aren't that interested in the music. I feel the pain of anyone who experiences this. Sound men will make you or break you. That's why alot of Band's will take a sound man with them on the road. If the Sound people hired for the Festival/gig know what they're doing, and know the difference between Electric and Acoustic Instruments, and allow the band's to "work the mics", then his job is easy.....If they're Modern Country, Electrified sound IDIOTS who only know electronic instruments/drums, then the guy we take along kindly offers to set and run the board during our show. Most of the time it's no big deal; they're glad to have a little break while our guy sets up "our sound". Of course some are "EXPERTS" and are territorial weenies and raise a big fuss.

I, too, have suffered at the hands of mercilessly incompetent soundmen at Tony Rice shows...it gets to the point where you want to cry sometimes...Luckily, the Birchmere and the Ram's Head usually have stellar sound set-ups, so you don't have to strain to hear Tony's leads. Although its never good to have any interference with the sound at any point, it is kind of cool when the sound guy "figures it out" and, all of a sudden, you feel like you're sitting directly in front of the man in a small room...like the sound just comes up and WOOSH...That being said, I highly recommend anyone who was disappointed by the sound at the Ashville show and have never seen Tony, Mr. Rowan, and the Brights at another venue to go see them whenver you can...its a great time and the music never fails to satisfy. Keep pickin'

Most soundmen are clueless when it comes to gain-staging and monitor mixes. MOST soundmen with start cutting frequencies in the range that creates the feedback, leading to absolutely terrible tone out front. Instead of proper mic positioning, and monitor positioning, they jsut start removing offending So if there are afrequencies. I have been to ACOUTSIC VENUES where the soundman is clueless. I remember seeing a show where Tony's microphone was literally pointing at the very bottom of Tony's guitar. Instead of fixing it, they just turned it up, causing terrible tone and worse feedback. The worse thing about iut, is that directly affects Tony's attack, and show performance having to always deal with feedback. Curse you soundmen without a clue. Rock on Tony!!!

This weekend re-affirmed why Tony is the greatest guitar player ever to explore acoustic music. I just saw Peter, Tony, Billy, & Bryn play both shows in Asheville and they were incredible. All these guys work really well together and are super talented. Next time you get an opportunity to see Tony live. Try to get close enough to really watch him play. You will be blown away at what you see & hear. Listen carefully for how he moves his right hand to alter tones & control rhythm patterns, and of course the left hand which masters the fretboard like no other. Also listen closely to the rest of these guys. They are a real treat. Kathi, thanks for letting me help out. It was a pleasure. Scott P.

"It's not as if the sound people really understand how to mic an acoustic show anyway, so it's not like the sound system could overpower all the disrespectful people at the show." Respectully, I share a slightly, albeit not by much, different opinion here. I think there were several issues going on in the bulding that no one could control. First and foremost, as all would agree, the rowdy crowd. That was definately disrespectful and absolutely inappropriate. Taking a closer look at the place before I left, I could definately understand how the sound left something to be desired. Anyone who was upstairs would not have been able to hear at all, since the speakers at the front of the "hall" were pointing almost straight down-- not even at crowd ear level. The feedback levels also suggest that the stage volume was too loud for the proximity of the microphones. This was my first trip to this place and it looked like it was set up to be more of an electric music setup than acoustic. I dunno... just my two cents. Any sound guys got any clues?

Never again will I go to the Pour House "Music Hall" for an acoustic show. This show had the potential to be magical. Tony, Peter, Bryn, and Mr. Bryn ;-). . . Unquestionable talent all over the stage, but unfortunately, none of the several hundred people at the show seemed to realize they were actually AT A SHOW. It's interesting too b/c they all paid the same ticket price that I did, but I think they forgot really what they were there for. If you want to chat LOUDLY, then you should have stayed at whatever BAR you fell out of, and NOT totally ruined a great show for the people that actually wanted to hear the music. This is the first TR show that I left early. It seems sacreligious I know, but I just couldn't take it anymore. It's not as if the sound people really understand how to mic an acoustic show anyway, so it's not like the sound system could overpower all the disrespectful people at the show. Peter is such a great storyteller too, and I love listening to his stories as much as hearing him play. Again, some respect would have been really nice. If not respect for anyone else who wanted to hear music, then perhaps at least for Peter, Tony, Bryn, and Mr. Bryn. I hope that I will have the chance to see this line-up again where I can actually hear the music.

Tony plays with Peter Rowan Saturday at 4 and 11.
Be sure to check out local favorites playing from 5-8 Friday in the lobby: Buncombe Turnpike, The Biscuit Burners
and The High Town Strutters. All three bands played in last summer's NC Mountain State Fair Bluegrass Competition:
Dan Bletz of The Biscuit Burners placed first for Bluegrass Guitar (and is highly influenced by Tony),
Buncombe Turnpike won first place for Best Overall Bluegrass Band.

I drove up to see your show in Sellersville, PA Saturday. Quite a drive but it was definitely worth it. It was the best show i've ever been to period. You've always been my favorite guitarist/musician ever since I first discovered you, and the show you put on just reinforced that. Your playing made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I saw Tony, Pete Rowans (Mr. Monroe always called him Pete Rowans) and the bass player from Bob Dylan's band (whose name unfortunately escapes me right now) at the Birchmere some time late last calender year. They were in good spirits, but it was subdued, trio affair. Enjoyable as all get out, too. The intimacy between the three was very neat. Now, if its Tony, Pete Rowans (Mr. Monroe always...well, you read it before...), and the Brights (Bryn and Billy), they have yet to disappoint me with their quartet shows. I've read that Tony enjoys playing with Rowan because its something that he doesn't have to rehearse to do, and, while that may sound lazy, its quite the opposite...Rowan's music gives Tony a chance to stretch out and play around a good bit more...their sets are usually loose and enjoyable....My ten cents, as my two cents were spent on poor jokes...Keep pickin'

I recently purchased the Homespun dvd and it was verry nice to see the "master", not only peform but also to hear him talk about tuning, noodling? and teach in a special way. Is there any change we might see him in europe soon? Thanks mr Rice for your beatiful music. Richard Pawlot.

Jim, For my two cents on an introduction to Tony's music...There's a few different sides to Tony's musical catalog...in terms of straight ahead bluegrass, you cannot go wrong with The Bluegrass Album Band series...just stellar picking and singing. Tony Rice Plays and Sings Bluegrass is also an amazing album, and Tony's guitar playing is FRONT and CENTER on every track, if that's important for you. In terms of his more singer/songwriter type stuff, Church Street Blues, Cold on the Shoulder, and Native American are great albums to get into that stuff...and they sure as heck aren't short on hot picking, either...Then, there's the "other" catagory of Tony's playing...called spacegrass or whathave you, its albums like Backwaters and Devlin. On this end, check out "Drive" by Bela Fleck. Tony is the primary guitar player on it, so you get to hear a lot of him there, too. Then, there's Manzanita. Its got everything mentioned above, an all-star line-up, and is just about a perfect album for any time. So, if you had to purchase just one, I would go with Manzanita, and then follow the above suggestions for the other parts of his playing. Can't wait to hear you at The Birchmere next Friday...Keep pickin',
Andy

CJ, Merlefest will be a mind-blower for you. Its so much fun, it should cost about five times as much as it does. I highly recommend staying in an area where there will be a lot of other pickers...the River's Edge Camp Ground is always a fun spot for late night jamming...Regardless of where you stay, the fest itself is always a ton of fun. I just bought tickets for the Feb. 6th show with the Scene at the Birchmere. Can't wait. Keep Pickin',

Hey Pamela- I just ordered tickets to the Tony and Peter show up in Albany in May. Are you coming up with him? I'd sure like to say hi. My little girl is the one who could pick out Tony from recordings when she was only two. She's three and a half now and I'd like to bring her, but I think it might be past her bedtime. Tell Tony I might bring Lou Martin with me instead.

Let me start by saying that TR is my favorite picker/player of all time. Whenever I think I'm getting pretty good, I throw a TR CD in and bring myself back to reality. He's just been a wonderful ambassador for the Acoustic Guitar over the last 30+ years. Thanks Tony. I think we all know how you feel about "rumors" and all the other BS that gets kicked around sometimes. It sure seems like some people really enjoy speculating all the "how(s)", and "why(s)" when it comes to your vocal condition and general health. I won't go into the idiotic details or the source and context of some of the recent "discussions" I've come across on other websites or bulletin boards. Let's just say they're not very nice and seem very self-righteous. I absolutely hate crap like that. I guess to put it simply, I, like so many of your other faithful fans, wonder how your health and spirit are doing these days? God Bless you and Pam and all your Friends/Family. Wishing the best always,

A message for all you "audiophile" Tony Rice fans. I have a Mobile Fidelity Gold Original Master Recording UDCD 506 of David Grisman "Hot Dawg" up for bid on Ebay. If you love this album (and who doesn't) this is the best sound you can possibly get. The timbre of the instruments is incredible and Tony's guitar sounds great. Just do a search for David grisman if you are interested. And, a message to Mr Rice: I'm still waiting for your visit to Yosemite with all that Canon gear you have so we can go shooting. It's a real landscape and nature photographers dream. Be my guest at any time. Also, how's "Swing 52" comin along? All the Best Walter http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=82270

A few weeks ago (possibly longer, but time loses all meaning when studying...), Mrs. Rice posted that "Native American" was her favorite of her husband's albums in terms of the music contained therein (or something that effect). On the strength of that recommendation, I dipped into my dad's cd collection and gave the album a good listen...what a fabulous collection of songs! I had heard live versions of some of them, but "100 Miles" and "Why You Been Gone So Long?" are great ones I had never heard before. And "Urge for Going" is just a wonderfully visual song that paints some beautifully bittersweet pictures of the changing seasons of a persons's life. I knew it was out there, and, for some reason, hadn't explored it earlier. Very different from the more bluegrass side, but equally great. As always, thanks for the tunes...Keep pickin'

Brian, if it was around ten years ago, sounds like the version of the Unit was most likely Tony and Wyatt Rice on guitars, Rickie Simpkins on fiddle, Ronnie Simpkins on bass, and Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin. And, yes, they did make a record together, although all instrumental, titled "Unit of Measure" which is great.

Some time last year one of the radio programs on BluegrassCountry.org played a "Live Feature" segment, featuring Tony Rice and group recorded around ten years ago at a festival. I missed most of the details of the show, but I remember the band included a fiddle player called, I think, Aubrey Haney, and a guest appearance by Bill Emerson on banjo. The band also included another very fine guitar player and an extraordinary mandolin player. Some of the numbers they played were "There Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone", "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight", "Maiden's Prayer", "Sixteen Miles" (a Gordon Lightfoot song), and the old "Nine Pound Hamburger". Can anyone tell me about the band at that time, and the show - who, when, where? And did that particular line-up ever make a record? Brian

A funny story... I was helping sell at a Tony Rice/LRB show in Richmond awhile back and as I was at the table, the chick with a cowboy hat came flying up to the table and said, "Hey! Is that Tony Rice up there with bald head? Referring to Sammy Shelor. I said, "No Hunny, but Tony will be out shortly. She then said, "Good cause that's who I'm hear to see!" That proves that he is truly a legend when people come to see Tony not realizing even what he looks like but wants to see him. Pick on!

I have loved your music for years. Absolutely no one can play the guitar like you and I have the tapes to prove. I have enjoyed seeing and hearing you a bluegrass festivals in the past and hope to do so again sometime in the future. It has been a while since I was able to attend a festival, but if I attend one I would love to see you heading the the list of performers. Thank you for the pleasure your music has given me.

You are an absolutely amazing guitarist and have given me a reason to dig into the old fretboard again. I havent felt this way like I did listening to your BLUEGRASS GUITAR COLLECTION cd since I heard the first Van Halen album - time to practise! Cheers - Eric

Hi Tony, Can't wait until you play this year at the Sellersville Theater in Feb! Your playing inspired me to begin playing bluegrass back in 84. Thanks for continuing to share your unique talents with us!

Hello Tony and everyone else ! I am looking forward to your performance in Chicago on 24 April, 2004. Also looking forward to the instructional DVD. I play mostly electric jazz and blues guitar but when I hear you play, I am inspired to pick up my acoustic guitar!! All the best .... Phil

....Hello CJ, I just read your message to Tony. He says that he has played there a few times. He suggests if you are interested, in trying to get him booked there...you will need to contact the promoters of the event. They may inturn contact Tonys agent Keith Case in Nashville to check his touring schedule.....Lexington is such a beautiful place. Hope they can work something out for you cj....Our Best to You
