When I was a kid my dad had Manzanita on 33Lp. After the first time I heard it, I was done for. There has not and will not be another great like T. Rice. I saw Tony for the 1st time in Steelville, Mo. 1 year ago (on your Saturday show Ronnie Simpkins brought you a shirt and a guitar strap to autograph which the shirt is now framed and on my wall!!!) and will be in attendace this year. I enjoy all your albums, whether solo or with the Bluegrass Album Band. And who can forget J.D Crowe & the New South. My personal favorites include Plays and Sings Bluegrass, Cold on the Shoulder, Devlin and his latest Bluegrass Guitar Collection. Tony, Thank you for all you have and done and continue to do for Bluegrass, Jazz and Flatpicking in general. If you ever have an audition for a new spot for Dobro, I'm up for the challenge. Monroe's Hornpipe, Blackberry Blossom, Cheyenne, Port Tobacco, I can play them all or my friends would'nt call me JD, jr. (Jerry Douglas). Thanks again Tony!!!!!

Tony, I just wanted to say thanks for your inspiration. I can remember years back staying up late at night trying to figure out some of your licks and wondering "how do you do it". I'm pleased to say that I will be seeing you at Down Home, TN in Sept. Again Tony, thank you for your inspiration. It's meant a lot to me.

To Elly in Arizona: I think we have you beat in being the oldest Tony fans. I'm 75 and my husband Earl is 82. We dearly love Tony and his music. The last few years Tony has been coming to Missouri in October and I get to celebrate my birthday seeing him. He is so sweet and kind. He always has time for a hug, a picture and a cup of coffee! Thank you Tony!

Hi Tony. I was able to see you and Peter 2 days ago in Washburn, WI. This was my first time seeing one of your shows. Unbelievable guitar playing. You are truly the best I've heard. You Peter and the Brights put on an excellent show. I can't wait for the CD to be released. Hopefully you will get back to WI to perform again. I know I'll never miss one of your shows. Your guitar playing is surely mind blowing. Thanks again for turning me on to your style of picking. Dave Swenson - WI

It was an honor to finally see Tony play live and he was nothing short of brilliant. It was a chilly night under the Big Top, but you were on fire. And was a blessing to meet you afterward, and allow me to get my pic taken with you, unfortunately the pics didn't turn out, but nonetheless the experience is forever embedded in my soul. Thank you Tony for being such a class act and your humbleness is beyond words. God bless you, Tony, and thank you again.

Hi Wes, Like we have said all along, this is NOT a forum, a thread board, a discussion board, or a list serv. This is for people to leave a message for Tony. We are working on a means to stop the spam-bots from posting to this guestbook. We have received very limited feedback from people in regards to opening up a discussion board. We have a listserv for ongoing discussions, but people have rarely used it. If we start a Fan Club, then we certainly would provide a password protected forum. For now, we are working on killing the spambots so the general people can post words about Tony without requiring them to sign in. Thanks for your input, continued support + patience Wes.

Tonyfan...Unless I am sorely mistaken, Tony uses a McKinney model capo that he obtained in the mid 70's or so. I have one and a few different other ones if you want to discuss them, you can email me at t.crowder@trccomputing.com...

Question for Mr. Rice: what kind of capo do you use? Rumour says it's a McKinney. If so, do you prefer any other models when a McK isn't avaliable? Any hot tips for staying in tune when using a capo? Thanks!

Tony I just wanted to let you know that your my absolute favorite artist of all time. I come from a long line of musicians, including my popaw who was one of the best banjo players I ever heard. I grew up listening to you, and since he did it seems your all I listen to. I appreciate music's ablity to keep our family close and together. Ive only got to see you once, and that was this year in Johnson City. I plan on seeing you as many times as possible. But I just wanted to let you know your to me the best that will ever be.

Been following Tony since the very early 70's, have learned many of his licks and emulate him as much as possible without completely losing my own style. I thank you for the wonderful challenges you have provided and the many head scratching practice sessions where i listen to a riff and ask " how the heck did he do that??" The very thing that helped me maintain my sanity, has also almost driven me nuts!! I too am 53 and as I grow older I lean more to tab than to just trying to work it out. Have you ever considered writing a tab book with all the songs you have done in the past set in 1 book or series of books?? At any rate, keep the challenges coming as i will continue to lose and regain my sanity respectively!!

My 6 year old and I saw LRB and Tony in Dayton, oh @ the Island Metro Park. Brandon Rinkman and Jeff Parker did a great job singing old Tony Classics. Cold on the Shoulder, Old train, Blue Railroad train. It was great to hear the vocal tunes that Tony has made so popular through the years. Sammy and the rest of LRB kicked butt too. Could it happen again this Summer? I sure hope so!

Dear Tony,
I’m an 18 year old from Australia and have been playing Bluegrass Guitar for a little over one year. Although my dad has played Banjo in bluegrass bands since the 60’s, due to artists like Alison Krauss and yourself, I have recently discovered my passion for bluegrass music and acoustic music in general.
After visiting Merlefest 2004 to promote “White Swallow Banjos” -made here in Adelaide, my dad was totally blown away by you’re performance with the “Unit”.
I hope to visit the “States” someday and see you live!
Warm Regards,
Chris McCarthy

Hi Folks, This is a guestbook, not a forum. It is not meant for ongoing topical discussions, that is what the listserv is for. Yes, there are automated spambots out there that will abuse the guestbook. We have another guestbook already completed which is more like a forum that we are considering releasing as part of a possible fan club. This would end much of the abuse and give fans a forum for ongoing discussions. Let us know what you would think, and if people would spend a few dollars to help offset the work that is done here. Thanks for your comments, and patience.

Hi Tony. I was at bluegrass festival recently in Wind Gap, PA. There was was some great young talent there. But the thing that I found most interesting was the influence that you have had on the younger generation. All the people that I was impressed by resembled your style alot. I know that you have inspired me like no other guitar player, and I have been playing for almost 20 years, Just wanted to let you know that you are the man and continue to insipre me, and hopefully more generations to come. I know my kids will grow up listening to your work. Thanks.

Mr Rice.
You have been an inspiration to me and many others that I know. Recently I played your version of The Gold Rush, Blackberry Blossum, and Brown Mountain Light at a friend of mine's wedding out of the country. I figured that the party would like to hear some Virginia music for the groome, to backup the local music of the bride.
Thanks so much.
I cannot wait to hear you sing again. See you in Orkney Springs

I have been a fan since 1977. I have only seen Tony live at festivals and that has been a long time ago. I never wanted to know much about the man because I was afraid it would ruin the music if I did not like him.
He remains a source of joy, when I hear him play and I loved to hear him sing.
I alway thought he would make the big time, Nashville and all that. Maybe he didn't want that, I have no clue but he sure is more talented than most of the people getting constant air play.
I love the music and hope it never ends.

Happy Birthday. Last week was your 53rd (?) birthday. Do you know how many hours and how many miles you have accompanied me as I listened to your music the last 20+ years? It has been wonderful as you soothed my heart, lifted my spirits, and let me bask in the warmth of such wonderful music just like I was sitting on my dock and soaking in the sun. Bless you in the heart for giving that to me and every one who stops to listen to you. It is a true gift and I thank you for sharing it with me. I look forward to seeing and listening to you live a week from tomorrow at the GAMH in San Francisco. Chao for now.

Tony, the only reason I am aware of your incredible talent and contribution to bluegrass music is because of my beloved brother (-in-law, but that's just a technicality). I have played guitar for roughly 17 years, and any exposure I may have had to traditional/roots music in my younger years was hastily replaced by a slew of '80s & '90s power chord-drenched tunes (I'm man enough to admit it...embarrassingly). I guess I'm mature enough now to really appreciate it, and couldn't be happier that one of your biggest admirers, my brother, Matt, introduced me to your wonderful work (and a compelling re-introduction to bluegrass itself). He passed on to me about a week ago his hard-to-part-with copy of "An Intimate Guitar Lesson With Tony Rice" video with book, and I've been relishing in it to say the least. Matt has given me good reason to "callous-up" again. So, thank you, Matt, for all your sharing, for your rendition of "Amazing Grace" at the wedding of Lisa & I (and our duet together afterwards), for your advice, and for so much more than there is room for here. You're a hell of a brother, "Freeborn"!!! Thank you, too, Tony, for your most admirable music. Happy belated 53rd birthday!

I started playing the guitar recently with a fine teacher named David Reynolds from Columbia, MD. I had never dreamed of getting into flatpicking or bluegrass, but the teacher had me learn your arrangement of The Red Haired Boy, and I've got to admit, it's great fun to play. And it was inspirational to hear your version of the song on a CD the teacher played for me. I hope to be able to see you play at the Guitar Congress in Towson, MD. Please come to the MD/DC/VA area soon for a full performance!!!

Zane, that's really my opinion. A brand new 1935 Martin D28 would probably not sound as good as a 2004 model guitar from some other company like SC, Collings, etc.. But it is also my opinion that time and age can only tell how these guitars will sound 20 years from now. Although I really REALLY love my SCPro guitar, I can't help but wonder what shortcuts were taken by the guitar builder to achieve a really good sound out of one of these latest brand guitars. I do know that SC offers a thinner soundboard than say a Martin, they do this so a brand new model will sound crisper. What effect this will have 20 years down the road in terms of sound quality can only be seen. I do love Martins, the good one's, including my dad's guitar are just amazing sources of tone and volume. I still prefer my SCPro *now* for it's punchy drive, but who knows what will happen to the sound 10 years from now. It should also be noted that Rice sens his SC guitar back to the shop every few years for a new one, or for adjustments, so maybe care and maintainence to keep the pristine tone these newer guitars are more demanding than the old Martin workhorses.

Well the example of my father's Martin D41 was that it was so bassy and muffled sounding it was horrible as a new instrument. Time brought out the brightness which made it into a wonderful guitar. An instrument will almost always become "clearer" or "brighter" sounding with age. This is just a natural tendency of the wood/lacquer to transfer the sound cleaner as it dries out. Some guitars develop a nice punchiness which may be construed as bass. It would have been nice to see what a brand new Martin D28 sounded like from 1935.
wes
- Saturday, June 05, 2004 at 21:34:04 (EDT)
My experience with a new bright sounding guitar is that after a period of time it will get more of a bottom end to it rather than get more brighter. In my opinion, stay away from a new guitar that has a lot of bass to begin with, because if it has to much bass to begin with it will likely only get more of a bottom end tone.

I had two opportunities to play Tony's D-28, which he was gracious enough to allow. I felt like a fool, playing this thing, in front of him, but he said: (and this cracked me up), "Go on and play that old Bone, Maahn. That's what it's for." The thing fretted like a Stratocaster, and, of course, sounded perfect.

Manassas, VA - Saturday, June 05, 2004 at 14:08:17 (EDT)
One word about a new guitar whether it be Martin, Collings, Santa Cruz, etc.. their tone will change within the first 3-5 years. It will continue to change 5-10 years and so forth although at a much lesser rate than the first 3-5 years. My particular SCPro actually sounded "muffled" when I first got it, BUT it had a certain punch to it that I liked. Within 3 years the "muffled" sound started to open up and brighten. Combined with the naturally punchy tone, this SC guitar sounds wonderful now. Another example, my father has a D41 he bot in 1991. When he first got it it literally sounded like a box with rubber bands on it. Simply *terrible* sounding. No punch, no growl. 5 years later, it began to sound like bells, today, it sounds like and angelic chorus, simply awesome sound any fingerpicker would drool for. The slightest touch on the light gauge strings will bring forth all kinds of tone and ringing. So I am a bit cautious about brand new guitars that sound great out of the box. If they are bright and punchy brand new, I am not so sure they will be "bassy" enough 3-5 years from now. A guitar will brighten as time goes on, so careful on purchasing a "bright" guitar today, may sond too bright tomorrow. Just my advice.

I have to make a correction on my input about the D-18 my husband bought the other day about sounding the best. A rare opportunity came up one night a long time ago when my husband got to meet Tony after show one night in Asheville. He let my husband PLAY his old Martin, and THAT one is the best sounding or playing guitar he has ever played. CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR YOU AT THE BLUE PLUM FESTIVAL TONIGHT. YOU ARE STILL THE BEST!!!

i have a lsv, and it sounds great, the flaw is the amount of set up crap i have to deal with when it comes to that guitar. the golden eras are great especially the brazilian d-28 but if you buy the right collings as far as a new guitar no major company compares (the key is that my opinion). All guitars of this caliber are good guitars including the ones that you all are talking about but i was wondering if anyone thought the same of the collings guitars cause they have won my heart i just need the cash to get one. I really wish tony could get his hands on one. But it doesnt matter, he could made an ovation sound like a dream and my ovation sounds like shoe box with strings.

THANKS FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK ABOUT THE VINTAGE GUITARS. MY HUSBAND,RICK, LEFT OUT WEDNESDAY ON HIS WAY TO GRUHNS GUITAR IN NASHVILLE WITH INTENTIONS ON PURCHASING A 40'S TO 50'S MARTIN. ONCE HE GOT THERE A FRIEND FROM YEARS BACK WAS EMPLOYED THERE. HE LET HIM PLAY EVERTHING FROM A COLLINS TO SANTA CRUZ TO ALL THE OLD MARTINS. HIS FRIEND ASKED IF HE HAD EVER PLAYED A GOLDEN ERA D-18. FROM THE FIRST LICK HE KNEW IT WOULD ROCK WITH ANYTHING IN THE STORE. WE NOW HAVE 4 MARTINS AND THE SOUND OF THIS NEW ONE IS ACTUALLY BETTER THAN HIS HD-28 LSV. THAT IS NOT ONLY MY OPINION BUT HIS ALSO. NOT ONLY IS THE SOUND AWESOME IT SAVED ME A CRAP LOAD OF MONEY!!! I'M SUCH A UNDERSTANDING WIFE. (HA HA!) To my ears, tony's old martin has always sounded like a great old 30's D-18. Not too bassy, but just the right amount of balance. But again I will state it has a lot to do with the way tony pulls the tone out of that certain guitar.
Steve
- Wednesday, June 02, 2004 at 23:10:59 (EDT)
There are exceptions in the Santa Cruz line, however the vast majority are well balanced if not somewhat brighter sounding than a typical Martin D28. The TR Pro model was built to sound and feel like Tony's D-28 which has a brighter tone than most pre-war Martins. One of the reasons Tony has stated that he uses the "jazz" nickel plated strings on it, which soften up the tone a bit.

Yeah, "Pre war" martins (H-D-28's with scaloped, foreward shifted bracing, long bridge saddle, v-shaped neck, and heringbone trim) were made through 1946, 1947 was the year of change,it was the first year without scaloped bracing and heringbone trim, ect. I have a Santa Cruz Tony Rice model and 6 (post war)Martins, and the Santa Cruz sounds more like a "prewar Martin" than any of the post war Martins.

Steve
- Wednesday, June 02, 2004 at 14:22:34 (EDT)
Just an observation. I've noticed that the older generation of guitar players prefer the sound of the bassy Martins. I mean, the ancient guys, the ones past 60... ;)
The young guys seem to enjoy a more balanced tone, ala Collins, Santa Cruz. I can't help conclude that Tony's very well balanced, not overly bassy D-28 has had a tremendous effect on the newer generation of players which steer them towards brighter sounding guitars. Although I do love the sound of Jimmy Martin's rhythmn, is that a D45?
wes
- Wednesday, June 02, 2004 at 11:24:52 (EDT)
Martin quite scalloping the braces in their guitars about 1944. Guitars from 1934 to 1944 are considered the "golden" age of Martin. Technically prewar is from 1934 to 1940, but most vintage guitar dealers call anything from 1945 back to 1934 "prewar." Keep burning it up Tony.
Steve
- Wednesday, June 02, 2004 at 03:55:37 (EDT)
Not necessariy. Martin made the clasic "pre-war" guitars, specifically the d-28, up until about 1947 with various combinations of bracing and herribgbone appointments.
Anonymous
- Tuesday, June 01, 2004 at 21:14:23 (EDT)
DFC, I can only assume that "prewar 1944" Martin is pre-Korean War. Looks as if a new class of Martins has been established.

I have a friend who has a prewar 1944 martin H-d28 and it has an amazing sound! The best guitar by far that i have ever played! You are right though most late 40's and early 50's martins to me are too bassy and boomy but the 44 is very well ballanced .

Ironically I haven't played a pre-war Martin that I liked. Most D-28's are way too bassy, boomy sounding. I did like a D-18 though, nice balance. Course just having a pre-war guitar is worth it's weight. Not so sure about the sound though, but that's just my opinion.

I apologize if I offended anyone with that last comment... I only wanted to over-emphasise the serious part simply because of the price issue involved. Unfortunately, the market for these vintage instruments is such that 5,000 dollars will get you a vintage guitar from the 50's, but it may not necessarily be a good vintage guitar. Once you start getting into the 1940's though, be prepared-- the prices skyrocket almost out of control for instruments of any sonic quality. All that said, there are still some great guitars to be had out there. Even ones from the late 50's and 60's are starting to age well. Just a thought!

Rick,
Are you looking for a particular model from the 40s-50s? (18/21/28/ D / O / OM ..?)
Common sense would say you were looking for a D-28, but it may help us narrow the field for you if you specify. Hopefully the "Guestbook Police" don't scorn us too hard for trying to help you out.
