GUEST BOOK ARCHIVE SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2004
These are the guestbook entries for September - December 2004.
Tony, Thanks so much for your willingness to share the secrets of flatpicking. Your inspiration made me believe that I could learn to play it also. It has really made guitar playing a lot of fun and helped me take it to a whole new level. Thanks so much and may God bless you always. Dennis Campbell djcssl@msn.com

Tony, I watch a video clip of you playing with Emmylou and noticed you playing either a Strat or telecaster guitar. What kind was it and do you still play electric any? Of course, we all know you are the master on the acoustic! May God richly bless you and your family...Happy Holidays!

Hi Tony, love your music. Was wondering if your coming to the central PA area anytime soon. My grandfather and are big fans. My grandfathers dad was Charlie Bowman, the oldtime fiddler. He was inna band called the Hillbillies in the 1920's. They were the 1st country string band to gain a national audience on both records and radio. He wrote Nine Pound Hammer, East Tennessee Blues, and Roll On Buddy Roll On. Ive heard your version of Nine Pound Hammer, i think its one of the best. Anyway keep up the great music.

Thank you so much for all the great music & hope to see you in the future.Sincerly one of your biggest fans and students of flatpicking, Mike Wilks

At the Larry benefit, several Rice family members were there. Larry introduced their mom, his wife, his daughter, and his granddaughter. Another family member, their mother's brother, Frank Poindexter, was playing dobro with the Rice brothers. Being an avid dobro fan, I picked up Frank's CD, and it is quite nice--mostly instrumental, with plenty of Frank, plenty of Tony breaks, Larry on mandolin, Wyatt and Ron as well. They were trying to tell me at the table that Frank also plays on the new Larry CD. I should have bought that one too. The evening was great. Larry did a fine job and made it through "Little Maggie" in high style. The Unit set was astonishing of course. I enjoyed watching Tony "direct traffic" on Shady Grove. Dawg took about a split second to figure out the arrangement, then nailed it with a big hammer. I think I heard Tony refer to Vassar as "Clem." Bryn blew us all away with a big solo on "My Favourite Things." Overall a most worthwhile glimpse into the life of a family of great musical personalities and their top notch colleagues.

Tony,
I was at the benefit for Larry last weekend. This was the first time that I was able to see you perform live. You were fantastic. It was nice to see the master at work. The "Bone" was pleasent to the eyes and ears. I was setting in the middle front row of the stage. The only thing that could have made the night better would have been able to meet you and get a picture, but I had lots of fun. Lee Kotick was great to deal with and I hope your experience was as well. I don't know if Larry mentioned it to you, but I gave him a Cancer Survivors Medal. It was special for me to give him a small form of inspiration to beat his type of Cancer. God Bless you and your family...

It was great to see you with Family and Friends at the Larry Rice Benefit in Tallahassee this past weekend. You had the "Old Bone" sounding as good as it ever has. It was my first time seeing/hearing Bryn Bright. WOW, what a bass player. Best wishes to you, your family and friends always. Happy Holidays.

If any of you Rice fans are looking for some exceptional music with Tony's playing, I am auctioning some very rare mint albums on EBay. Todd Phillips "Released", Darol Anger "Fiddlistics", David Grisman "Dawg Grass Dawg Jazz", and Tony Rice Unit "Still Inside". These albums contain some of Tony's very best work as a sideman, especially the Todd Phillips album. Just do a search on EBay for those titles. All of them are in pristine perfect mint condition. Also, Best wishes to Tony and Pam for a happy and joyous holiday season.

When I was about fifteen I saw a Tony Rice concert video. He played some hot bluegrass songs along with Mark O'Connor, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck and Mark Schatz on that tape. That was amazing for me. Then and there I decided that one day I'm gonna play bluegrass on my guitar just like Tony. Now -ten years later- I'm afraid I'll never gonna beat this... But you know what? I am going to work on it 'til the last day of my life. I thank You, Tony.

I've been listening to Tony for about ten years. My music ranges from Bluegrass,Acoustic,Jazz and Blues and when I'm bored with it all, I can always play something of his. Tony's music is always the best thing in my truck!!! Can't wait until Merle Fest. I also hope he will come back to the Carolina Theater in Greensboro, NC. Tony, Peter Rowan and the Trio put on an amazing show there about 4 years ago.

just got the intimate lesson with tony rice dvd its great tony, i have the other one as well, but i love to watch the older onc because i never got to see you sing, you have mastered so many things in music that nobody will ever duplicate. everyone talks of your guitar work but to me you are the greatest bluegrass singer of all time and because your are so great at guitar so many over look that, and i am proud that you have worked through your trials with the voice and still worked up some new and interesting material for your fans it sets a great example for young kids to work hard.

This is Dustin Rogers from Batesburg, SC. I am 16 years old and i love to play the guitar. I am currently in a Bluegrass/Country band. We call ourselves: Country Inc. Bluegrass. We would love to hear back from you, but we understand your busy schedule. I have your instructional DVD, and i like working on my unique style with this DVD. We also have an annual "show" down at our newly built Playhouse. We call it Tony's place (The man who owns it is named Tony). We all enjoy you music, and would love to see you down here sometime. If you want to get some info, or just return this conversation, you can e-mail me at luke_one37@yahoo.com. I hope you read this, if not...I think that i will live. But, i want to wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

Wow, I suppose I need to post the reminder that this is a guestbook reserved for the average person to post some kind words for Tony. There is a DISCUSSION LIST made available to talk to your hearts content. Please use it instead of this guestbook. Like Tony had to say in the past, BS is a waste of time and people do it just to start trouble. As far as the spam, talk to your government to pass some real technology anti-spam laws. We HAVE to leave this guestbook open so ANYONE can post to it. If people are interested in paying money for a fan club that offers a private board, let us know. Do you actually think we like to deal with the spam? We even know that some people that frequent this board actually post some of the garbage. Yes, we have footprints that bust you. And for those who continue to ask about the Foxes, they have moved on and no longer associated with Tony Rice. We do our very best to maintain this website. Tony is a private man. Did I say Tony is a private man? We were ASKED to help by Tony after the Foxes left. We had to rebuild the entire store ordering processes, bank accounts, stocking new merchandise, actually paying for that merchandise, and we have provided MORE information regarding Tony in a couple of months than was done in three years. The dates are more accurrate. We have reduced the turn around time for an order from an avg. 30 days, to next day shipments. We drive over 3 hours to get things signed for you the fans. We may not have every piece of Tony's recorded music, but rest assured we are slowly building the stock back up. If people want to come on this board and bad mouth us, then we are here to set the record straight. We are here for the LOVE of Tony's music not to defend ourselves. And rest assured we are working towards a much better flow of information, updates, and unique content. Please take your negativity elsewhere. You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. For the love of God, please put on some Devlin or the new disc and remind yourself why you like Tony Rice.

The Birchmere show had some really great moments ,most of them being Tony's guitar playing. It was fairly short-1 + hours since they needed to empty the lot to make way for Lone Star fans who were starting to arrive for the second show. Peter's voice started a bit weak and peaked about half way through. Still its great to see such talent on the stage.

i remember a time when the site was good for discussion for all those who love bluegrass and TONYS music, i understand that respect is key when discussing a man of MR. Rices level but i believe that he would prefer to be called Tony seeing that bluegrass music is special because the musicians are approachable and kind and i dont believe that tony would object to a 18 year old kid trying to find a guitar through his site, because as long as someone is playing bluegrass his music will live on so there Misanthrope thats my 10cents. id do anything for Tony Rice i plan on trying to make the trip for ky to fla. just for the benifit concert because i want to do what i can for larry. i would never use his site for selfish reason he is the most important influence i have ever had.

Hi Tony. I was wondering if you are related to The Tony Brothers, circa late 1930s-early 1940s. My great grndfather played with them, his name was Charlie Bowman. He also played with "The Hillbillies"/"Buckle Busters" back in the late 1920s. He wrote and recorded "Nine Pound Hammer" "roll on buddy, roll on" east tennessee blues and many other tunes. Dear Tony and crew:
Just want to say how much I've enjoyed "stumbling" onto Tony and his talent. Calif. Autumn was my first album, and there have been many more bought since. I'm a trombone player, and yeah, there's no brass parts for the most part in bluegrass, but I have used ideas heard from Tony and his players in my playing in other genres. What an inspiration! Great music to "treadmill" to, drive with, and groove with. Can't wait to see Tony play live sometime. Best regards, and God bless.

I have been mostly a fan of "electric music" and play in a group for a church. However, listening to Tony play is a thing of beauty and he is the reason I have been picking up my acoustic occasionally at home. God bless you Tony.

Just found out about the Larry Rice benefit concert. Very worthwhile endevor. Also, noticed that some autographed copies of Devlin were for sale. I have a couple of questions: 1) What does Devlin mean, is it someone's name? 2) Has anyone ever heard the track "Untitled As Of Yet" live? To me this is just a great tune!

Tony's Update. As many of you know the dangers of over practice and repetitive hand injuries are commonplace amongst stringed instrument players. Like others, Tony was concerned about these issues when he experienced some discomfort during a recent show, which led to the cancellation of a few shows. Tony has sought medical advice from well respected doctors and the advice was to remain vigilant on a program of limited use and rest while touring rigorously. He is resting the arm for the next leg of this tour in November and should not be affected. Having played guitar for as many years as he has, it is important to protect the hands that create that music for years to come. Worthy advice to all.

Well folks, while Tony remains my favorite guitar player of all time for his approach, tone, taste and timing, I've given up on this site as a source of information (except for the tour dates) for my guitar hero. Whoever the "webmaster" is for this site would do well to get updated information and let Tony's fans know what's going on from time to time. (Biography????) My understanding is that Tony is a "private" person and I absolutely respect that. With that said, I hope that if you are actually injured or fighting the painful conditions of arthritis/tendonitis, I hope you feel better soon.
This is my final post here as I send out my best wishes to Tony and Pam, as well as your friends and family. May you both prosper as time goes on. I'm a lifelong fan and will remain so, no matter what. I think I'll go fill up the Stereo with all your recordings and listen for a good long while. See you on the road sometime.

I've been a part of Bluegrass music my entire life, as my father has played banjo for 25 years. I'm 19 years old, and in love with the guitar. I have every one of your albums. I couldn't even begin to say enough about what I think about your playing. You have completely inspired me. I sometimes play for 5 hours straight, and I have a 50 hour a week job. I have your New Acoustic Guitar tablature book. That book is awesome. I wish you had more tablature out. My dad has played Jerusaelm Ridge for years, but no rhythm guitar players could follow him, let alone ever take a break, but I can do that now. Once again, I can't say enough. You are amazing. Your breaks and rhythm skills are always totally awesome, I love them. I'm going to continue to learn scales, patterns, chords, breaks, and everything because I want to one day be as good as you. You are the best Tony, and thanks a ton for inspiring and entertaining me the way you have. Thanks.

Tony, It was absolutely wonderful to see you yesterday. I figured the last time I saw you was in 1987. I'm so sorry you're having problems with tendonitis. I saw your grimacing when you were playing. I have been bothered by tendonitis in both my right hand and elbow off and on for years. I pray that your physician can find a solution for you. It's hard for you to rest your right arm because you use it to make your living, but rest and therapy are very important. OK, that's the nurse in me coming out. I'm glad you got the photos of you and Bill M. Tony, I will always cherish you as a dear friend and hope we can be in touch more often. Take care, Suzanne

Hey Tony , i just played a gig in the KM building in Kalispel Montana for a guy called Pat who says he's a friend of yours . Now i'm back in Jersey and see that your not playing anywhere near by while i'm in the states . I'm a huge fan of your pickin' and think we should get you over to England! Why don't you ever play over there? I book for a venue or two that might be able to just about afford you. The english believe you to be the official bluegrass flat picker , they'd turn out in their hordes to see you play . If your interested or would like to hear more about the British Bluegrass scene , go to my band web site www.the-badgers.co.uk and leave me a message in the guestbook . Cheers .

Just got my copy of "You Were There For Me" by Tony Rice and Peter Rowan(s). This is a must have for all of Tony's fans. The solo work is exceptional as usual, but what is strikeing is the back up fill stuff. Although we don't here Tony vocally, he is singing and expressing himself throughout each song. Also, it struck me that one of the things that seperates Tony from others is that there are some great licks on each song, but they aren't repeated over and over. Often times you will hear a player lay down something good, but then they go back to it over and over again. I think this is want makes Tony an original. God Bless

just wanted to acknowledge the best damn bluegrass giutar picker that ever lived. noone else even comes close. tony was making guitar flatpicking history before anyone ever thought about the guitar as a lead instrument. he is the best vocalist in my opinion that has ever lived. i want to thank tony rice for giving me personally the drive to want to be part of this music as a musician and i will always be a great fan of his. although i regret the fact that he cant sing anymore i have collected all of his vocal recordings and they continue to be on the top of my listening favorites. his singing portrays a true icon with his heart and soul interpretations. he will always be my favorite bluegrass singer and picker. drive on mr. Rice. and thanks for you presence in this genre. all great flatpickers owe you a great debt for pioneering so many guitar methods and your style is present in nearly every current superpicker. thanks a million.
