GUEST BOOK ARCHIVE JANUARY - MARCH 2005

I've been learning the 5 string banjo for a year, now and recently at a jam some guys turned me on to Tony Rice Sings and Plays Bluegrass, to learn a few tunes they do. Awesome stuff. Not sure which is my favorite. Carolina Star is a great song and Brown Mountain Lights haunts me. I would recommend this Cd to all.

Hey Adrien AuCoin, I suppose I should actually try to use my playback-slower I bought not too long ago. Haven't used it yet, but I'm guessing that's the way to go. It's still hard to hear some of the cross picking notes and "grace" notes though. Thanks for your input.

I agree with MR. Fairchild. No matter how fast you can play if it is not smooth all the notes will just sound jumbled together. I would rather hear some one play a slow guitar break and hear all the notes equally. I really Enjoy Your music MR. Rice please come to Tampa and pick for us. Joe Cochran

Yeah there are lots of people who play extremley fast, but they are sloppy as everything. Playing fast and keeping it smooth at the same time is a hard enough trick to pull off. Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, David Grier are two of the smoothest players when playing at top speeds, but of course speed is not everything. In my honest opinion, Tony and Bryan are the best going today as far as getting "tone" out of an acoustic guitar. Sincerely, Z. F.

Hey everyone, I used to play the Banjo, and would often have a man I knew tab out certain songs that I couldn't figure out. I was wondering if anyone knew of someone (or yourselves) that tabs out songs and/or whole CDs for guitar. Theres a few CD's and songs that are freaking awesome that I can't figure out and would love tablature for it (it isn't in a tab book yet). Thanks, hope someone can help me out. Respond by e-mail would be best, Nates_Sheer@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Thank God for Tony Rice Music and Summer Wages. I have been raised on the sweet melody all my life. I have passed on this love of music to my own children. The love of Guitar picking is keeping a most rowdy teen of 16 locked away in search of sound. I wish to extend a special intro to Tony and ask that he find a smile knowing this Mom is in love and grateful to him. A Smith

No it is not. The shell will be too thin, plus it doesnt have the right color. Hawksbill is the only "sea" turtle that You can get "tortoise shell" from. So dont let bubba kill a poor little snapping tutle in his back yard to try and make picks, I'T WONT WORK.

I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to see you perform, with Wyatt, Mr. Simpkins and Ms. Bright, in Tacoma last night, after having listened to your records for so many years. I don't have good words to describe the performance. Wonderful works fine, I guess. A fellow sitting in front of us who'd seen you play at the church earlier said you hadn't been feeling well, so I appreciate all the more your coming out and playing so beautifully for us, especially at that late hour. Thanks for the music, Mr. Rice, and all best wishes from Jane and me.

Went to see you at the Vareity PLay House in Atlanta. That show was great. It was the greatest musical experience of my life. You take the lead and smoothly stray off rythm and play some sick notes for a while, then pull it right back in. The guy who opened for you and thousands more musicians mimic your style, however you make it look much easier. Here's to the most innovative (GREATEST) picker in bluegrass.

Jerry Garcia's best days were behind him to say the least in the Pizza Tapes recording. Garcia's influence on guitar and music in general was not necessarily defined by his ability to play an acoustic guitar, especially bluegrass guitar. However, Jerry does hold his own in the recording but it sounds like he is playing out of his comfort zone. Jerry was most effective behind one of his custom electric guitars, preferable his Stratocaster from the early 70's. On the other hand, the exceptional talent of Tony Rice is displayed during the impromptu session. Tony played amazingly and both Garcia and Grisman were well aware of it. The only question is could Tony hold his own in Garcia's world. I dont need to hear it to know that he most certainly would. Tony your the best.

Just saw your video from the "92 Merlefest. Amazing! I especially loved Red-Haired Boy, Salt Creek and Nine Pound Hammer but the best moment was to see the look on Bela's face after he finished his solo on "President Garfield's Rag" and Jerry took off. It's amazing how fast that one finger guitarist can play! God Bless you and you family. Brent

Tony you are a true great of acoustic guitar. I've loved your style and tone from the minute I first heard you nearly 30 years ago. I found it very intresting how The Pizza Tapes showed things in a different light. With Jerry Garcia, an ageing Garcia with many health problems, years past his best. Garcia the sun of a million influences but so good you hear one note, one chord, acoustic or electric in any genre and you say "Thats Garcia" That is a great guitarist. Clean, crisp, perfect picking at breakneck speed as ever by Rice put in the shade by Garcia. Only Jerry could sit with a master like Tony and be able to hold his own.

I have recently become a great fan. Your playing style and your stage presence is totally professional. I have been trying to learn some of your music and listen to it all of the time. We here in Hawaii have not been exposed to much Bluegrass music, however, we are very big fans of the guitar. Hawaiian folk music involves a lot of guitar and, of course, the ukulele. Hope to someday see you perform live at possibly a West Coast Venue or perhaps Hawaii?

Hi Tony, Wanted to drop a note and say I've been a fan of your's for a long long time. Had your brother Wyatt stay at my house in Halifax many years ago with a mutual friend, Ray Legere...keep up the great playing and hope to cross paths someday :-)

Tony never did record "Never meant to be" on an album. He just did it live. He may have recorded it, but the song didnt make the final cut.

I have been a fan of yours for many years and I'm so happy to find your web page. It is good to see you doing well and still touring. I was told Larry was having some health problems but pray he will recover and be completely healed. The picture of you, Wyatt and Larry combines some of the greatest talent in the country. Stay healthy and God bless.
