A message to Mr Tony Rice, Just caught your site after many years of listening to your music and watching you on DVD. (We do not get enough bluegrass in this country)You guys in the US do not know how lucky you are to have this kind of live music on your doorstep. Hopefully one day I will visit and see it for myself and soak up the atmosphere. Anychance of a UK visit Tony? Steve Kaufman has been flying the flag in the UK. We are less demonstrative and outgoing in this country but I would shout and scream like a good old boy if I could see you live. All the best to bluegrassers everywhere. George

Speaking of good luthiers for guitars, anyone know of a very good one in South Florida? I'm getting a buzz on my 1st and 6th string, but it's not all the time. It's like sparatic (I guess the woods still changing...came from TN about 2 months ago). Thanks!

Tony, when are You coming back to Asheville? By the way, Roy Noble is full of crap. The top on Tony's guitar looks to me like an original 30's top, only with a bigger sound hole. I have heard some stories about MR. Noble.

"Roland said that Clarence used the D-28 mostly for rhythm and played his D-18 for leads, but Rice recalls seeing White play the D-28 quite often. Also, there has been some mention, in this magazine and others, of Roy Noble making "modifications" to the guitar. Rice says, "If there was any modification that was done to that instrument, I have no idea what it was. I don't have any idea how Roy Noble would have modified it. If he did, I wouldn't admit it (if I were him) because when I got the guitar it was a mess. It was a train wreck." The D-28 did need repairs while in White's ownership. Once, the Whites were at a gig in Ann Arbor when Clarence backed the van over both guitars. According to Roland, Clarence went down from the house they were staying in to load the guitars. When he got to the vehicle, he discovered the doors were locked and the keys were in the house, so he sat the guitars down, went back for the keys, returned, got in the car, backed-up and CRUNCH. The D-18 was hurt much worse than the D-28 and a repairman in Ann Arbor put it back together again. Roland said the D-18 actually sounded about the same if not better, in spite of having a whole lot of wood putty in it. " From Flatpicking Guitar Magazine

That Martin guitar on Roy Nobles web site is NOT the same guitar that Tony owns. That guitar (Nobles) does not have a bound fingerboard and the fingerboard does not extend into the soundhole. Tony's 1935 D-28 has never been re-topped and is obviously Adirondack spruce (just look at the width between the grain). Roy noble may have rebuilt a D-28 that Clarence owned but I do not believe it is the same guitar now in Tony's possession. There is a certain ambiguity in the way Roy Nobles web site presents its claim about a "famous Martin guitar"

Just caught the TRU performance at the Mayville Bluegrass Festival - great show. Looked like the guys (and gal - Ms. Bright) were having a great time, as was the audience. It was a little chilly, but that's early summer in Western NY for you. It looked like it took a few tunes to literally get warmed up! I hope Tony's comment regarding wanting to come back to Mayville next year comes to fruition.

Someone please set the record straight, about the ol' bone! I was just on Roy Noble's site and apparently, he claims to have rebuilt the ol' bone when Clarence ran over it. "There are many rumors floating around about a Martin guitar that Clarence White owned and played. In order to set the historical record straight. Roy Noble rebuilt one of Clarence White's Martins after it had suffered extensive damage. A new Noble Sitka Spruce top with an extra large sound hole and new neck were fitted to the remains of his Martin D-28 shell. The fingerboard was unadorned and no decal on the headstock as requested by Clarence. The guitar is legendary among those who have played it. See Guitar Player 09/79 for additional information " That is what was on the website. Someone please clarify it, preferably Tony, Pam, Larry, Wyatt, or any of the people who are close to Tony and the guitar.

Tony is probably one of the best pickers ever to come for a long time. Not just because of his ability, but because he came before a lot of today's pickers. He set the standard. It's harder to be the original you know. But I'm really looking for some shell. I don't want antiques I want shell. Full taxidermies or just shells (finished or raw). No games, no rookies, e-mail me at extinctflatpicker@hotmail.com. Thanks! Mike

Tony I have listened to your music for a long time and I have to say you are the best guitarist thats ever picked up a Martin guitar. You have the smoothest right hand movement and your guitars always has a real ring to them. Well it was nice to drop a line to you and you keep doing what you do best, keep bending them strings.

Tony Rice has an exceptional amount of class and by you impersonating me it just makes you look bad. Stop making a fool of yourself and making this guestbook a joke! If you don't have anything good to say about Tony, his music, or his fans, then don't post here. And overall, please don't post about me anymore. I'm fairly fragile and can't handle unnecesary verbal abuse. Even the webmaster has asked politely, please stop? Thanks, and I'm sorry for the community for being targetted in this matter.

Tony Rice is one of the VERY few exceptions to musicians. 95% of musicians are starving and poor as anything. Are you better off at McDonalds or a starving musician, and Tony Rice wannabe?

Hey this is for the tony fans familiar with some of Tony's unique chords. Does anyone know what the chord shape is that Tony uses at the beginning of E.M.D. and Fishscale on his old David Grisman Album? He uses a different Em chord, and I'm not sure how he gets that sound? Can anybody help me? Thanks.

Salut. Hey, Tony. I caught you and Peter Rowan at the Mstic Theatre i Petaluma about a year or so ago. I spend alot of time in Holland with musician friends (one of them is one of Holland's Jazz Allstars). I was just recently telling them how you were the most beautifully playing flatpicker on the planet. I grew up throughout the South with great southern music as mother's milk. I pray you and your family are well. P.S. In case you have come down, like me , with CRS (Can't Remember S-ht), it's been a long time since I would come over to your house in Corte Madera and wound up the photographer on a couple of your albums

Later on that night on the radio portion of the show on Vince Gills show, Tony did Summertime with AKUS backing him and IM here to tell You he went off on it. Tony also played Freeborn Man with AKUS and Dan Tyminski sung it, all of this though was not televised as it was just on the radio part. I was lucky enough to record it off my computer, I am subscribed to WSM Radio online and it came through crystal clear.

As in most mainstream genre's, they play to the audience that pays. Like it or not, acoustic flatpicking cannot be considered mainstream. AK however, has stitched together bluegrass and country like no other. She appeals to country hicks and bluegrass rednecks like myself.

Well that Grand Ole Opry performance was completely rediculous. One song, one barely decent song, with only 1 break he played. That is rediculous! I feel for the Ricester, I wanted to see him play at potential..not just one break to some simple song. Even the little girl played more than him. That disgusts me. They made Tony look like a scrub or something, oh well. Sorry Tony.

The jam at Station Inn can be good, and can be bad. I don't think I've ever been to a "public" jam without a "mix" of characters. Every one is welcome to jam there though. But also bear in mind, No one is great and no one stinks in a jam. Mostly, no one has a rider or gets paid for it! It's all for fun. I was there Sunday nite myself, and it was an odd nite, not many singers. As John Duffey said "Win a few, lose the big ones!"

I don't presume to speak for Tony, but please let me say this-- I do know, as many people do, that Tony and Vassar are very close. I am fairly certain he would not mind someone saying that he was spending time with Vassar and tried to play as much at Merlefest as he could. I'm certain that most of us, being given the choice of playing a festival or being "there" for a dear friend in his time of need would choose the latter over the former.

Tony, you don't strike me as much of a cocky jerk at all. In fact, I think you wouldn't even feel the need to act like that, because you know darn well how good you are. Well let me tell you something, and everyone else out there. I played at the Station Inn in TN this last Sunday. What a bunch of ignorant, cocky JERKS! I cannot get over it. It takes everything in me to keep the player's names unrevealed, but there were a few pretty well-known pickers there. I cannot get over it, and am frankly quite upset over it. Not sure what this proves by posting this, except it makes me feel a bit better, lol. Tony, your still my idol, you are the God of Guitar.

I remember when my good friend Jimmy Gaudreau and Tony played together. The best sound around. I liked to watch Tony play at the Birchmere and get lost in his music. Thanks Tony for the best years of my life.

All it took for me was to hear "Old Grey Coat" back in the early 80's.

Tony was more less goofing off on that recording. It sort of reminded me of seeing Don Reno at a show in Ohio in the 70's, Bill Keith came out and did some twin banjo stuff with Don, well Bill thought he would pick MR Reno into a corner, HUGE mistake, Dons second break on the banjo made Bill Keiths face as red as an apple. So I think that would be the way Tony is, if he wanted too he could put any guitar player in their place, IF he wanted too, but I dont think Tony is that type of a guy. In my opinion there is no one better!

Don, I think the pizza tapes represented 3 guys in a "different state of mind" if you catch my drift. Rice is one of the premier improvisational acoustic guitar players on the planet. I think maybe you should listen to more of his playing, especially his live work.

I found it intresting listening to the Pizza Tapes, Garcia's solo's and improvising was much more intresting and melodic. Sure it wasn't as crisp and as clean as Mr Rice's picking. But Tony is a great flat picker who is a strict man of scales and dedication to his craft over all of his life. He is not a great improviser, his style is too formal and strict for that. Jerry Garcia despite being many years past his best and suffering ill health proved how melodic and intresting he was....always hitting the right note. With Tony I was dissapointed. But Tony I love your guitar work, you are indeed one of the best in your field.

I first saw Tony Rice at Doc Watson's Bluegrass Memorial to his son about seven years ago....I couldn't believe my ears and what a wonderful face. I am listening to one of Tony's cds right now and looking at pictures of his pets...I adore men who love animals. Thank You Tony. I'll keep on listening.

HI THERE! Two years ago I received a video made by some Air Force fellas about the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. There was a song on it that was beautiful and moved me to tears. The credits said it was a Tony Rice song, For God and Country. Is this true? If so how may I get a copy of this. THANK YOU!!! hharrison91@hotmail.com

Larry Update: Hi Folks, We do apologize for the delay in responses to all the inquiries regarding Larry's health. We have been trying to reach Tony for the "official" word but it has been tough. We will pass on what we know, but please, we are truly not authorized to speak for Larry regarding his health. In speaking with Tony about 3 weeks ago, he told me that Larry was becoming quite the inspiration amongst the lung cancer circles as his recent tests had shown little/if any signs of the disease. A miracle of sorts. PLEASE take that as it may, we do not want to mis-lead anyone. We are merely saying what we heard to try and give an update for you all. Of course we hope it is true as this world needs miracles when it comes to cancer. Please remember Vassar....

Who is the greatest microprocessor chip designer of all time? And why? You see you have to understand the intricacies of processor design to make an intelligent guess on who the greatest may be. The same goes for acoustic guitar flatpicking. If you don't understand the intricacies of acoustic flatpicking you cannot make an intelligent guess on who might be the greatest.. If you understand anything at all about how and why Tony chooses certain notes, his choice of chordal voicings during background playing, not to mention the intricacies of his tone, then you soon understand what makes this man the greatest acoustic flatpicker of the 20th and 21st century. Any other arguments are futile.

Tony isn't the greatest guitar playing around or of all time. He is one of the finest flat pickers of his chosen art though. A master of his art but not overall the best ever. Comparing is futile.

I feel so sorry for the guy who thinks Roy Clark is anywhere near the caliber of picker Tony is. (Why didn't he just go ahead and say "Willie Nelson's the fastest guitarist on the planet"?) In good fun,

Stringbean never claimed to be a great banjo player, he was an entertainer, there isa brief difference there. Keep up the great work Tony. Does anyone that manages this message board, know how Larry Rice is doing? A lot of people supported and have prayed for Larry so an update every once in awhile I think would be great.

I'm still laughing! Mentioning Roy Clark in the same sentence with Tony Rice would be like comparing String Bean to Bela Fleck. I can't even type, I'm laughing so hard.
