Tony: It was great to pick with you on the Buddy Melton session in Asheville. I've loved your guitar playin' a long time and hope we can play some Bluegrass again soon. I've been a fan a long time and hope we can pick some BG again soon. Your guitar filled the room that day. Marc Pruett

Tony is undoubtably the greatest guitarist I have ever heard, and probably will ever hear as far as I'm concerned. His speed, accuracy, tone, ideas, and approach in general is unmatched on every single tier.

I proudly play some of your tunes, in my own slower and simplified ways. Thank you for sharing your emense talents. I look forward to your next visit to our area! Merry Christmas !

I read this and thought.....these are the posts that mean the most to me and are the ones that are the "true" individuals...I'm sure Tony relates to these wonderful individulas as much as any. Bluegrass knows no level of education, but it does know the quality of the individuals that play and listen, no matter their background. People... proofread your messages before posting. Tony deserves to have a guestbook with at least a 10th grade writing level... geez. Fan - Monday, November 28, 2005 at 19:12:21 (EST)

I'm trying to gather some general feedback from guitar users, and luthiers alike. Every Mahogany backed guitar is made of two pieces, connected with the strip in the middle, of course. What about a solid piece of Mahogany for the back? Needless to say, that would be extremely rare as nobody can obtain a piece of Mahogany large enough, which is why it's always two pieces. Personally, I think it would be extremely cool because it is so rare. Also, I would imagine that it would add to a nicer tone since there is no break in the wood, maybe that would make the vibration more fluent? I don't know, I am not an instrument builder. But I gathered some feedback from some guitar luthiers I know in the southeast. Please feel free to post any/all opinions! Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Tony, what a pleasure. My wife and I as well drove 3 hours there and back Thursday night to the Bama Theatre. I'm so inspired and so glad you played "My Favorite Things" and "Waltz for Indira." Words can't describe. And you are one heck of a nice guy, thanks for taking some time with us after the show. Something I will for sure never forget. I'm glad you are doing well and VERY glad to see you playing the old Martin. WOW what a treat. Hope to see you again next year, if not sooner. And if you decide to do some photography in Mississippi, let me know, I've got some purty places to show you! God Bless you. Tyler Bridge

Great Show at the Bama On thursday, Nov 10. I really enjoyed the first time at Horse Pens forty back in the seventies when you played with J.D. Crow. I have seen your at Daloniga GA and also at Merle Fest, and I believe you were at Station Inn Once with Wyatt. All outstanding shows just like the one last night in Tuscaloosa. Thanks for your great contibution. Also for arragements with some of the greates players of all time especially for the ones that made the trip to Tuscaloosa with you to the BAMA! Wow !What a great show, I would like to see a set list for the first and second set, I was familiar with all the tunes last night except the one just before Tom Paxtons,Are you going away with no word of fairwell. The tune I believe was in the Key of F minor, maybe, jazzy but smooth, I have heard it beore but did not no the name. I did catch Devilin. In all great performance, for Rickie, Wyatt, Rob Ickes, and most of all your bass player Brinn. From row seven it all cooked. In T Town they like their Bluegrass just like their Bar B Que ! SMOKED!!! Yours smoked last night. Bill Jones

Great show in Tuscaloosa last night. It really has been great to have you in Tuscaloosa twice in one year. I have brought a crew of three or four from Decatur down to those shows. By the way, I'd love to have you come to Decatur or Huntsville. Huntsville (pop. approx 200k) has a stong bluegrass and oldtime community. Norman Blake's two or so concerts in Huntsville within the past 5 or so years have been sell outs. You would have a great response also. Alabama is not exactly a bluegrass epicenter, but we turn out at the concerts when great talent comes to town.

Tony you are a true inspiration to me. I have studied your techniques and playing quite closely and you are truly one of the best. I have been fortunate enough to be around and hear many GREAT guitar players. My father George McCorkle was a founding member of The Marshall Tucker Band. I feel blessed to have had the opportunities to be around the folks that I have. I have seen you in concert a few times and I have nearly all of your CD's. Someone so kindly relieved me of quite a few of them without my permission but I am working on getting my collction back together. My favortite show was you, Peter Rowan and(I can't remember the young lady that was playing bass' name but she was awesome!) at The Handlebar in Greenville SC. Man that was a smokin set ya'll played. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world bro.

I just saw a re-run of Tony with Alison Krauss & Union Station on "Grand Ole Opry Live" on Gac. As usual, he burned up the stage and looked so happy. The program will air again tonight at 7:00 P.M. Try to catch it because anything Tony does is so cool. Can't wait until he plays either the Paramount in Ashland, Kentucky or "Mountain Stage" in Charleston, West Virginia. Both venues are near me. Several years ago I read about the history of the 1935 D-28 (I think it was in Frets). Aside from being owned by Clarence, does anyone know more about it? It was run over? It was stolen? And I seem to remember Tony acquired it from a pawn shop? Thanks.

Tony, you have been an inspiration for a few years now. My dream guitar is for sure the Santa Cruz Tony Rice (pro) model. I drove 2 hours to a music store that had one to play it, and the moments spend with that guitar are still with me. That thing was a CANNON! Check out my new tunes at tmoody.com when you get a chance. Peace to you bro.

Saw Tony and the group at IBMA on Saturday evening. It was truly amazing. After seeing many great flatpickers on stage over the weekend, it was evident that Tony is in a league of his own. He is the one guitarist that most every bluegrass guitarist wants to be. It would appear that he has forgotten more than most of us will ever know when it comes to flatpicking. During the show, he he stood there like a stonewall, performing like a magician, while never speaking a word. In fact, he didnt have to speak. His hands done all the talking for him. Truly remarkable. A true legend of his time.

I was wondering about the year of Tony's guitar? I had some guy argue me that Tony plays a D-35 because the the white neck trim. But I knew it was from before there were any D-35s were around. I was guessing it might be about the same age as Larry Sparks' guitar. I've always loved that sound.

While working in Virginia this past summer I frequently heard references to the Shenandoah Valley; each time it sparked a memory of a festival at Asheville where Tony sat in a chair, on stage and mesmerized the audience with his rendition of "O Shenandoah". I have other happy memories of Tony's music dating back to Withlacoochee Backwater Bluegrass Festival days! Tony, you've filled my life with beautiful memories of exquisite music! Thanks!

If memory serves I believe Tony did do a brief guest spot on Hee Haw back in the early to mid 70's, I can't remember exactly but it seems it was "Freeborn Man" or maybe "Cripple Creek" because I remember seeing Buck Owens with that goofy grin and red, white and blue guitar playing "backup," although I'm not sure how much they actually played or if they were just Kornfield Kounty props or something - but I may be wrong.

We do our best to keep the spam off people. If only I had time to be able to gripe about such trivial things! I can't help but think that some of you need to get a life and stop obsessing about what ends up on Tony Rice's website. If you really want to stop it, try talking to your elected representatives to pass no-spam legislation. You are just adding more work for me and yes, I will continue to remove anything I personally find offensive.

I have listened to Tony Rice for years and enjoyed every aspect of his legacy. It's confusing and very sad that anyone would place Tony Rice in a corn field with a bunch of "claw hammer G" pluckers on Hee Haw. There is a vast difference in their kind of music and the sound Rice produces. He could have picked "She'll Be Coming Around The Mountain" twice before the Hee Haw Gang could have figured out what was going on. Let all this nonsense pass and elevate this man where he should be! Tony you are the greatest and you are admired in Pound, VA as well as Logan and Chapmanville, WV...that's where my brothers live.

Dear Mr. Rice, I first heard you on the radio many years ago while driving through Floyd, Virginia. You made me fall in love with bluegrass music! After years of listening to Tony Rice music, my 23-year-old son and 19-year-old daughter love bluegrass, too, even though many of their (uneducated!) college friends made fun of them! Thank you for sharing your incredible talent (do you ever MELT your guitar strings?) and unique brand of bluegrass with us. I hope there is a Tony Rice room in heaven so I can enjoy your playing forever! Kim Smith

I concur with Carol. Tony is passionate and serious about his music and musicianship, that any showing on Hee Haw would have been demeaning; not that I have anything against Hee Haw or any of its guests. I just don't see it ever being T's cup-of-tea (coffee).

Personally, I cannot imagine Tony wanting to appear on "Hee-Haw." He is very particular about his venues. I cannot imagine Tony 'popping up' in a corn field or his wearing some of those grody clothes on the show. I can see him, however dressed in a nice suit, wearing a silk shirt and an aqua tie and Florsheim shoes. He is a first-class act. From the heart of Bluegrass Country in Ashland, Kentucky ... CJ.

Awww.... come on... seriously, let's stop picking on the guys from Hee Haw... Unless we're getting paid the same or more for our own music, I don't think we have the right to say anything-- and even if we did, they could always laugh at us all the way to the bank.

I was wondering from all you Tony fans if you think that the influence of such star pickers as Roy Clark, String bean, Grandpa Jones, Ronnie Stoneman, or the Hager Twins are major influences on Tony? I wish Tony could have had a spot on Hee Haw. Let's hear from all of you on your opinion.

Mr. Tony I am a 14 year old guitar picker and I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your music and how much you have influenced me in my playing. I have almost all of your CD's and I can't tell you how much I learn from them everyday. Saw Tony and Peter for the first time at the Botanical Gardens in Richmond VA, Oct. 2005. I was mesmerized. I enjoyed it immensely. That was some FINE playin'! I love "Ahmed the Beggar Boy"...what a beautiful song. Yes, the set was too short but could it ever be "enough"? Well worth ticket price. Only down side is...it leaves you wanting more. Unfortunately it will probably be a long time before Tony and/or Peter come back. At any rate...I feel honored to have been given such a gift. And I can honestly say...a little age sits VERY well on both Tony and Peter. They looked FINE as frog's hair! Hope you come back to Richmond VA soon! I could fix y'all some ham biscuits with brunswick stew. lol

I for one would gladly subscribe to this message board, as I do for others, if it kept all this spam crap out of the site. Tony Rice is in my opinion the finest guitarist alive, and his talent deserves much better than this site is giving him. This is not meant as an attack on the caretakers, just one pre-pickers opinion.

I would give $100 just to see Tony play for 15 minutes. I dont think Tony feels too good most days with the tendonitis and I can understand what he is going through since I have it also.I have been to some of Tonys concerts where he played almost the whole night, when he was in a good mood and stuck around to talk with some of the fans. Keep up the great work Tony and May God Bless!

FIRST OFF DOES ANYONE KNOW IF PAM WILL BE AT IBMA I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO MEET HER AS SHE SEEMED VERY FREINDLY ON THIS BOARD LAST YEAR???........AS to the current topic ...Ive seen, and met Tony thats just how he is. Hes a very nice guy but some days as i understand he does not feel like talking due to the throat condition therefore he is unable to stay around and talk with people. I am not sure about this but i believe he has underwent surgery at one time on his elbow so a short set is understandable. Anyone should feel lucky to see him in this stage of his musicianship because he is more musical than he has ever been. To me he is doing a favor just by playing out because he doesnt have to and considering the pyhsical things he has had to deal with it is pretty selfless of him. just my 2 cents!!cant wait till ibma

I don't know what happened or what didn't happen, but let't not forget that Tony does suffer from a combination of tendonitis and osteoarthritis that can make ordinary movement excruciatingly painful and prohibit playing at times... not to presume too much, but he's told me that himself. I don't know if that's what happened, but I mention it only to say there are innumerable things that can cause a show to run short... who really knows? :-)

I am writing in response to the previous post from Mark in Fredericksburg. I was at the show and it was fantastic. They played a great set including many great songs. The band was awesome.Sharon, the new mandolin player is a great addition to the band.Tony's playing was exceptional. He truly gets better with time.Peter was kind enough to sign an autograph for me after the show.I feel like I truly got my hard earned money's worth at that concert.I will continue to go see Tony any chance I get. I think Tony Rice is the greatest human to have ever played the acoustic guitar. That said, I'm concerned about the short gigs that the Rowan/Rice ensemble play. I heard this past Friday Rowan and Rice played a short 45 minute set in Richmond and fled the venue like it was on fire. I saw them do that to me once, and I felt cheated. Hey guys, earn the hard bucks we pay you. Just some feedback from a disappointed fan.

Great music at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, but a very short show. Only about an hour and fifteen minutes, including encore. Then to top it off, Tony didn't come out for the final encore. Is everything alright, I sure hope so. I love Tony, but thst was a little disappointing to not see him on stage for the final encore.

I saw Tony in a little bar in Knoxville many years ago and have loved his music ever since. The subtle, jazzy, Memphis blues, pure bluegrass, flat picking virtuosity of this man astounds me every time I turn one of his CDs. What a range! His singing was a perfect compliment to his sometime whimsical, whispy jazz grass, rip roaring, toe tapping blue grass, and plaintive blues. I can listen to it forever and hope that Tony has a long and prosperous career. I am glad I found this website so I can obtain more of his albums.

Mike, buy some of Tonys jazz albums, like Backwaters, Still Inside and the first David Grisman album. On the Grisman album, he plays on a tune called Fishscale and absolutely tears it up, with a barrage of 16th notes played as fast and as smooth as John McLaughlin EVER thought of doing and plus with a heck of a lot more TONE!! Tony was and still is the guy!

I'm a big fan of Gipsy Jazz guitar played in the style of Django Reinhardt, but I recently decided to expose myself to some bluegrass faltpicking guitar and stumbled upon the music of Tony Rice. He is one amazing and tasty guitar player!!! Bottom line ! I immediately ordered some of his instructional DVD's because I had to find out how to play at least one tune along the style of Tony Rice. I thought that European gypsy masters Angelo DeBarre, Birelli Lagrene, and Stochello Rosenberg were the only flatpicking Gods.... not anymore; Tony Rice ranks right up there with them! He's a versatile and truly gifted guitarist and I only wish that I discovered his music earlier on in my life.

BENEFIT CONCERT FOR KATRINA EVACUEES I would like to hear from anyone who is in a good, hot bluegrass band within driving distance of Thomasville, Georgia, who can muster their group to come and play at the Thomasville Cultural Center for a live audience AND a live remote radio broadcast audience. "Lazy Lynn" Robinson has his bluegrass radio show every Saturday from 12 noon until 5pm, and on September 17, he is broadcasting remotely from the cultural center with as many bands as he can get to come and cover the five-hour slot. ALL THE PROCEEDS from this show will go either to the LOCAL chapter of the American Red Cross, which is heavily involved in sheltering evacuees in our area, or to the individual local efforts of trustworthy people who have gone to get some evacuees in buses and bring them to south Georgia. We've got some local yokels (myself included) signed on, but we're looking for some good, seasoned performers who can make it an attraction for those who will make donations to get into the cultural center to see the show. Respond here if you think you can do it, and I will figure out a way for you to get in touch with me. If not, that's OK, no harm in asking. Just be aware that bands will receive no compensation. It's all going to those in need of our help.

Tony Rice?s statement on the death of Vassar Clements:

When Vassar Clements re-emerged on the music scene in 1971 (with John Hartford), he really raised the bar for my own musicianship in that his playing inspired me to want to be that good. Through the years, Vassar always continued to inspire me, and I was enormously blessed to have him play on many of my own records, as well as on collaborations with other artists. I am deeply grieved at his passing, as the man was my hero, but I am so grateful for all of wonderful times and laughter we shared. He was my friend, and I loved him. Thankfully, Vassar?s music will live on for all of us to enjoy, but I will truly miss the man.

Hey there-- Shenandoah is a tune that when arranged in a manner similar to the way Tony plays it will sound different depending on who is playing it. The easiest way I could describe learning to play it would be to think of the notes of the melody and then put together a string of chords that "spell" that melody. That said, it's on his last video along with tablature of an arrangement of it. Definately my favorite piece to play and the only piece ever to make me pull my car off the road to stop and listen upon first hearing it. :-)

Tony: So sorry to hear about your uncle Walter Poindexter's passing. I just found this out today. I worked with him on Dickey Betts LP Highway Call. He was a great guy and told me a joke that I'll never forget and I'll never forget him either. All my best.

We post all the information we receive for the shows as soon as we get them from Tony's booking agent. I often look up the venue links to include when time permits. We are not always notified immediately when shows cancel. So... we do the best with what we've got.

just a suggestion to the webmasters.... could you please include contact information for the venues when you post Tony's dates? Also, if you could be a little more current, it would be great! Unfortunatly, I have often found his dates in other places on the web long in advance of seeing it here. Just a thought. I am still trying to find information for Tony's show in Mocksville, just so I can find the venue! Thanks! cynstudios

I had the pleasure of seeing Alison Krauss, on fiddle, when she was about 17, in The Tony Rice Unit. Talk about "killah".

Tony is, of course, untouchable, in any genre he chooses. Any word on how the voice is coming along? He and Skaggs were The Best, on J.D. Crow & the New South's LP, from the 70s.....

Crossings Disc - This is an album that was remastered from an older release and not a compilation. Personally I think it is a great instrumental disc that features Tony with some great licks. More info on song selection can be found on Tony's CD page.

The best synthetic substitute is bade by the Tor-Tis company and it is their 2nd generation picks. You can find them at places like the red bear tranding company, etc. by looking for them on google. I bought a few of them and they are every bit as good as the real thing. Aside from that, you're left with the clayton yellow picks (very good) and the dunlop yellow picks (also very good-- slightly better than the claytons). Let's not forget though that the end listener will not be able to tell just by sound whether you used the "real thing" or a newer synthetic substitute. Can any of us really tell on which recordings Clarence used the real thing versus the gibson heavy/extra heavy celluloid? :-)

I was just wondering what kind of picks Tony Rice uses and if he ever posts responses or comments on his webpage. I use to use tourtise shell picks to get a good memory and response from my right hand for flat picking but understand that they are illegal now due to the endangered species of the source; I have tried many different types of flat picks over the years (including Tortex) but have not found the same results. Does anyone know of a suitable substitute? Thank you very kindly for all of the great music, Tony Rice, if you can please respond.

The current lineup for the quartet is Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, Bryn Bright, and Wyatt Rice. Don't know about any future plans with the Lonesome River Band. Tony is really enjoying playing with the quartet these days. We'll ask him though next time we talk to him. We just got in Tony's Gospel CD Crossings and it is just fantastic! It should be available for online ordering by tonight.

Does Tony use a flat pick, finger picks, bare fingers or the Peter Frampton method? What ever happened to Peter Frampton & Frampton Comes Alive? Wasn't it mass mailed to us all in the 70's?
