Tony, Very sorry about your brother, Larry. My wife and I went to Granite Hill to see you and were saddened by the news. I saw you 5 or 6 years ago at the Ryman with Vasser, Bela, and Peter. Wow. I have been anxious to see you again after being much more familiar with your work since. I am amazed. Thank you Ray

My wife Lucy & I attended your recent concert at the Kent Stage... and we were overwhelmed. How completely delightful. Tony,I'm sorry that Larry left us all so soon. He truely was a great man and will be missed. I know for a fact that he sure loved you and his brothers and mom. I had the pleasure of spending much time with him over the years and will never forget him and his craziness, and thoughtfulness with everyone he met. Dear Tony and Pamela: I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved Larry. I just got the news after a week's vacation in the mountains. As you know, I had the honor of writing the Liner Notes for Larry's latest CD, "Clouds Over Carolina." I had a long, long conversation with Larry's wife Linda this afternoon. She asked me to post a message from her on The Rice Brothers' Web site at: http://groups.msn.com/RiceBrothersPage <> I reassured Linda that Larry's name, comments, photos and his status as Co-manager of the web site will remain. Larry was a true friend, very strong until the end. Linda wants everyone to know that your prayers and your concerns are deeply appreciated. She says she will keep in touch with the fans at The Rice Brothers' Page; her screen name is: Larrymandolin. My sincere prayers are with the entire family at this time; especially with Tony because Larry loved Tony and his brothers and his mother Louise so much. It seems every time I talked to him, he was looking forward to seeing Tony or hearing from Tony. What a wonderful family: Larry, Tony, Ron, and Wyatt. All my best, Carol Jeffrey - Photojournalist <> Manager - Rice Brothers' Page on MSN. RiceBrothers_Page@hotmail.com <>

Just knowing there was a Larry Rice inspired me to keep playing through the low bucks, no bucks, writing songs you wonder if anybody cares about at all. I saw Larry standing in a parking lot once playing his mandolin. Just leaning against the trunk of a car. I wanted to go up a talk to him but he was so engrossed in his mandolin that I just stood by and listened. He was somewhere far away. For those few minutes I am sure he was not in that hot parking lot at all. Tony, Wyatt, and all the Rice family... hang in there. You cannot imagine what an inspiration you all have been and continue to be to so many people. Bradley Laird

What can I say...I had the honor of knowing Larry as a friend and as a musicain. We performed a set on March 25, 2006 at Suwanne Springfest.......I will miss him greatly. I would like to send condolences to Linda, Louise, and the rest of the Rice family. One of Larry's friends commented at the funeral; "when god takes someone before their time it always makes you ask why...perhaps, in this case, god needed a mandolin player for his angel band." Good-bye Larry.....your positive spirit and music will live on for ever. -

My heart breaks for you All. Our Fathers played Bluegrass together many years ago. Larry played quite a bit with my Father in the late 60's and 70's. I remember being at your parent's house as kids and all of us chasing each other around screaming and having a great time. I think I was around 6 or 7 and I am 52 now. That was out in California and a long time ago. I have a great picture of Larry hanging in my office from Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party Band. It was taken in the Hollywood Hills. Larry and I had emailed each other over the years, but I had no idea he was ill. God Bless him and God Bless you and all of your Families... So sorry for your loss. Larry has been battling it for a while, but it was surprising news none-the-less. I've have gotten to know Tony over the years, and have met Wyatt of course, but never met Larry in person. However, after I reviewed his "Runnin' Wild" CD with Rice,Rice,Hillman, and Pedersen a few years back Larry and I would email back and forth on occasion. He was always nice and informative and good to me in that regard. I also brought Larry up when I interviewed JD Crowe, and here is how JD remmebers Larry and Tony coming into his band, "1971. Tony came in later, Larry came in first. Bobby Slone, my bass player, knew both of them when they were kids because Bobby lived out there in California. They had a little group out there and Bobby knew them and they knew Bobby. I was needing a mandolin player so he told me about Larry, and I said to call him and see if he was interested in coming up and playing, you now. So he did and he came in, and he didn't have much choice. He wasn't doing nothing out there but starving to death. He barely got in and when he got here he didn't have enough money to pay the tolls, he had to use the back roads." Then, as we all know, Larry left JD's band to tour with Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers fame who had just put out the "Highway Call" album. Frank Poindexter, Larry's uncle, was in that band, as was our old buddy Vassar. Here are some pics of Larry that I found on the internet. This first one is of Tony and Larry as young kids playing with their father's Golden State Boys band in California, which has to be from the early 1960's, http://tinyurl.com/zzavd, And this one I found today on a Japanese website. Apparently Larry sent this to some Japanese fans, and it is of him and Tony playing and singing with JD Crowe back in the early 1970's, http://tinyurl.com/jmg3u. After a lot of experimenting, I finally figured out Tony's right hand technique for playing those fast tunes. I've been playing Bluegrass for about a year now, but coming from a classical guitar background I was focusing too much on left hand positioning instead of my right hand. They key to getting that fluid and authoritative phrasing in Bluegrass is to play close to the bridge; anchor the space between your bicep and forearm almost at the three o' clock position on the body of the guitar, which will allow you to move parallel between the strings with minimum effort. Pivoting the angle of the pick also seems to do wonders.

In Re: Tony's voice. I read Tony say it was narrowed down to either muscle tension or spasmodic dysphonia. I haven't heard which one they diagnosed, if they ever diagnosed one or the other. I think the muscle tension version is supposedly correctable, but the other is not. Correct me if I remember incorrectly

Today it is with great sadness that we learned of the recent death of Tony's brother-in-law after a prolonged and painful illness. We'd like to send our heartfelt sympathy to Tony's wife Pam on the loss of her brother and to Tony, their family, and all those that knew and loved him. Due to the obligations to his family during this difficult time of passing, Tony has been and will be unable to appear at scheduled shows from April 5 - April 15, 2006. Tony asked that we extend his sincerest apologies for his absense to his band: Peter, Bryn, and Sharon, his agent and friend Keith Case, all of the promoters and other people that worked to make the New England tour happen, and especially to all of the fans. Please feel free to leave your messages of condolences for Tony and Pam and family on the guestbook.

Tony's voice condition is called "dystonia." Years of singing to us and always giving 110% weakened the muscles around his vocal cords. He has said in interviews he continues to work with specialists and therapists.

Mike from Ky.....thanks for the info regarding Tony and his vocal problems. I do have one of his older instructional DVD's--I guess from the early 1980's--where he sings Church Street Blues, and he sounds amazing! I have mastered several tunes from both the old instructionals and his latest one; my favorites are the kick off to Cold on the Shoulder and Blue Railroad Train. His unique arrangements, emphasizing that bluesy feel with that non-stop bluegrass train-like tempo, just touches the soul.

Mike in Clearwater, you asked......."I'm currently studying several tunes on Tony's latest DVD and I've noticed that his voice is almost gone. Is there something wrong with his health causing his vocal problems? I'm a new Tony Rice fan and don't know much about his background, but I hope all is well....Mike, unfortunetly Tony has not been able to sing for over a decade now. Its some kind of throat condition. He has shared in interviews what the doctors have told them it is, but I cant remember what it was and probably couldnt pronounce it if I could. Its a shame because his singing was just so unique and good. At least we still have his incredible picking to enjoy....Mike

Hi folks, 2 nights ago a friend and I went to see Tony and Peter Rowan in Lexington. As usual Tony delivered the goods in a big way. I posted a review on another web-site and thought you all would like to read it as well... ----------------------------- OK folks, we went to Lexington for the concert tonight. 1st of all, someone mentioned that it appeared and sounded like they just "mailed it in" a few days ago. Well, that sure wasnt the case tonight. Style wise it was basically just like on the "You Were There for Me" CD. Although some different songs were added, it was the same "bluegrass" based but contemporary styled acoustic music Tony has come to be known for. They did however use a few songs to launch into a bit of the extended jazz influenced "spacegrass" that Tony has done in the past. On one song in particular they really streached it out, and Peter added his very unique style of yodeling to Tony's extended lead work. (And the concert ended with Tony playing a scorching Salt Creek) The sound...in contrast to my last experience with this group...was magificent! The folks running the sound knew what they were doing. As far as Tony's playing, he sure didnt seem to be "mailing it in" tonight! His playing was strong, fast of course, fluid, and just had the unmistakable, silky smooth "Tony Rice" quality that you hear in his best playing. At times very VERY superb. He seemed pretty animated...acknowledging people, "winking" thank you's to people standing or hollering their approval at his breaks. He spoke briefly of his days in Lexington back when he was with J.D. Crowe and that classic New South lineup. Peter was excellant of course. His singing was very very good, and he played some pretty good lead breaks himself, both Travis style picking and flatpicked. Bryn took several absolutly *outstanding* bass solos, and did her very nice back up singing all night long. Some odds and ends: When Peter took his 1st guitar break on I think the 2nd song, Tony left his mike and actually walked all the way behind everyone, completly un-miked back next to Bryn. If Tony did that to let it be known, to any who might not be familiar with Peter, that this was Peter taking this break, then that was a very classy thing to do imo. Also, every time Bryn took a break Tony moved back and stood...again unmiked...right in front of her, apparently wanting to make sure she heard the backup rythmn guitar clearly. Again, pretty classy. A couple of non-musical notes. I'm not saying anything about this at all, I'm just sharing it. Bryn was not introduced as Bryn Bright...but rather Bryn Davis. And Billy Bright was not with the group. A very attractive young lady played mandolin. I think her 1st name was Cheryl, but cant remember her last name. She did a very good job playing the mandolin. She can really pick. One last thing. We had 3rd row center seats, and this is actually the closest I have ever been to Tony when playing. I noticed the same thing in watching him that I notice in videos. Its just amazing how the notes flying at warp speed out of his guitar do not seem to match up at all with the seemingly few movements his fingers...on both hands...make. The man has obviously mastered the art of economy of motion...for lack of a better phrase...when playing. ----------------------------- The "very attractive young lady" I referred to on mandolin, I have since found out was Texas native Sharon Gilchrist. She did a marvelous job on mandolin. Tony is still "Da Man"!

I just want reiterate again, if you're a guitarist (any level) or a Tony Rice fan you need to buy his latest instructional DVD, The Master Class "up close and personal". I've studied classical guitar since I was eleven, South American Waltzes, Django Reinhardt Gypsy swing, but Tony Rice is something else!! His ability to play complicated pieces of music and make them sound effortless with soul is a unique gift.

I was swallowed by bluegrass in 1971 and discovered Tony's playing soon after. I've now retired and finally got myself an old D28 and the time to put in the work I need to get as far as my limited talents allow. Tony has been an inspiration to me throughout this time in the same way as Scruggs and Grisman has for the other guys in the band. We're still going too. So, I owe you a great deal Tony, my sincerest thanks to you.

Saw Tony on a PBS special last night, think it was Bluegrass Journey something like that. Fantastic. Hey! bought a Santa Cruz D/PW last year and love it. Tried out the Tony Rice and the Tony Rice Professional while I was there. Must have! Might trade up or maybe have to buy out right this summer. On the special last night the guitar Tony plays looks like it has been through a war! Sounds good though. Listening to Monroe's Horn and similar while on the treadmill for inspiration. Makes the workout go faster and more enjoyable. Thanks Tony for the music.

I do know they are medium gauge strings, and having the fortune to play the instrument myself, I can attest to the low setup and medium strings.

I just received my Tony Rice Master-class instructional DVD today. Unbelievable! His version of Summertime is wickedly b*tchin, along with all the other tunes.

Per my previous post, I just purchased a really nice custom built dread naught from master luthier Augustino LoPrinzi. He told me that he worked on Tony's 1936 Martin (repair)but didn't remember anyhting about Tony's preference for strings/gauge.

Does anyone know what brand strings and gauge Tony uses on his Martin? What about the action on the fretboard?

Don't miss Tony and Peter at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC this Friday, Feb. 17 2006. Singer-songwriter Donna Hughes will be opening the show. Donna penned "My Poor Old Heart", which appears on Alison Krauss and Union Station's grammy-award winning "Lonely Runs Both Ways" album (country album of the year). Tony produced Donna's latest album and performs on 11 of the tracks.

Just saw and heard Peter Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet. I wasn't surprised at the great performance that Tony put on. At the end of the show, I chance to meet him for a minute. Besides being a great musician and performer, he is a gentleman.

Wonderful show at Harvard Saturday Jan. 21, 2006. The last set when you and Peter joined David Bromberg was wonderful. My son, who attends Berklee for guitar, enjoyed the interplay between the three of you immensely. Thank You

Dear Tony, I'm a 35 year old jazz/funk guitarist currently playing in an organ trio, but in my pre/early teens I was 100% bluegrass. You were one of my absolute favorite players, along with J. Douglas, O'Conner, Doc Watson, et al. Right now I'm listening to a cd-r made from my vinyl copy of Manzanita, which I wore out. Still sounds great. Thanks for the music. I'm looking foward to seeing you in Indy next month- for the first time! Take care, Joe

When I recently saw Tony sing Church Street Blues in his instructional video "An Intimate Lesson..." I was blown away. As a new fan of Tony, and after seeing him live recently, I was shocked at the pure, sweet, good natured voice he once had. The performance of Church Street Blues in this video is worth the $30 alone!

Tony Rice is one the greatest musicians I have ever heard. One of my favorite CD's is the old JD Crowe CD where Tony Rice sings with JD and Ricky Skaggs. The song "One Tear" that he sings with Doyle Lawson is also a classic song.

Does anyone at Tony's website or anyone else have any information on how Larry Rice is doing now? Is he still undergoing treatments for Mesothelioma? I love his music as well as Tony's and would love to know how he's getting along. Thanks.
