Tony:
Amazing show last night at the Birchmere. Bryn, Ricky and Wyatt were tight as could be and you were so animated on stage it was obvious you all were having a blast. Got home and immediately ordered tickets for the May 16th show with AKUS at Constitution Hall which is sure to be a magical evening. Best wishes to you and Pam for 2007.
Be Well,

Tony,
Just finished watching your dvd I bought for my grandson.I got the last copy at Gibson showcase in Nashville while Christmas shopping. Many years ago when you first came to play with Bluegrass Alliance I became a fan of yours.I can remember wanting to give you a new shirt cause you played in the same one a lot.Didn't want to embarass you.My son and I ate supper with you near Lexington right after the Mac Wiseman festival at Renfro Valley 1972 He was 9 years old and you told him when you were 9 you was practising your guitar.I started him on guitar that year and today he plays in one of the best bluegrass bands in Atlanta.Wish you well and respect your music very much.I knew you were a great talent when very few people did.I feel good about that. You deserve that credit.

DEAR TONY AND PAM~~GEORGE AND I SEND OUR WISHES FOR YOU TO HAVE GOOD HEALTH, HAPPINESS, LOVE AND PEACE. ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR BEING SUCH A CLOSE FRIEND TO YOUR PAL "CLEM." PAPA KNEW YOU LOVED HIM DEARLY. I MEAN YOU'VE EVEN NAMED ONE OF YOUR PETS "VASSAR." WHAT A COMPLIMENT!!!!! BY THE WAY, I'VE TOLD PAM TO BE SURE AND SEND ME A PHOTO OF VASSAR SINCE HE'S JUST BEEN CLIPPED FOR I KNOW HE'S BOUND TO LOOK JUST ADORABLE. ALSO, THE CD THAT GRISSMAN PRODUCED AND RECORDED I'VE PLAYED MANY TIMES OVER. THE CUT YOU AND HE DID CALLED "BLUES FOR VASSAR" IS SO HEARTFELT AND BRINGS MANY TEARS TO ME. RICKY SKAGGS AND KENTUCKY THUNDER JUST THIS YEAR DID AN INSTRUMENTAL CD AND A CUT ON IT IS CALLED "MISSING VASSAR." OH, HOW FITTING THE TITLES ARE. THERE'S NO DOUBT THAT THROUGH THE YEARS WHEN I'VE ASKED PAPA WHEN AND IF HE SHOULD DIE WHAT LEGACY WOULD HE WANT? HIS REPLY WAS "JUST REMEMBERED." THAT SAYS IT ALL!!!! CONTINUE TO BE SAFE IN YOUR TRAVELS AND KNOW THAT WE SEND OUR LOVE TO YOU, PAM AND YOUR FAMILY A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND BRIGHTER YEAR IN 2007. MAY GOD BLESS US ALL!!! WITH LOVE, MIDGE

DEAR TONY AND PAM~ LET ME BEGIN BY SAYING THAT GEORGE AND I WISH YOU HEATH, HAPPINESS, LOVE AND PEACE NOW AND IN THE UPCOMING NEW YEAR OF 2007. TONY, TO YOU THANK YOU AS I'VE TOLD YOU PERSONALLY, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR BEING SUCH A SPECIAL FRIEND TO PAPA FOR MANY YEARS. YOU GUYS HAVE PERFORMED SOME SUPERB MUSIC TOGETHER, ALONG WITH MANY OF YOUR MUSICAL TALENTED FRIENDS. I THANK YOU FOR THE VISITS AT THE HOSPITAL AS WELL AS AT HOME WHEN PAPA WAS ILL. YOU ALWAYS MADE HIM SMILE, WHEN HE FELT SO BAD. THE CD CALLED TONE POETS ON ACOUSTIC DISC THAT YOU AND GRISSMAN DID CALLED "BLUES FOR VASSAR" TOUCHED MY HEARTSTRINGS. I'M VERY MUCH AWARE OF THE DEDICATION THAT YOU AND OTHER ARTISTS HAVE MADE TRIBUTES TO PAPA AT VARIOUS FESTIVALS LAST YEAR AS WELL AS SOME HAVING BEEN MADE THIS YEAR. I THANK YOU FOR THAT. JUST THIS YEAR, RICKY SKAGGS AND KENTUCKY THUNDER DID AN INSTRUMENTAL CD AND ONE OF THE CUTS ON IT THEY DEDICATED TO PAPA. IT'S CALLED "MISSING VASSAR." ALL OF THIS BRINGS MANY TEARS TO ME. IT JUST REMINDS ME OF WHEN I ASKED PAPA IN THE YEARS GONE BY HOW HE WOULD LIKE HIS LEGACY TO BE REMEMBERED, HIS RESPONSE WAS "JUST REMEMBERED." PLEASE CONTINUE TO BE SAFE IN YOUR TRAVELS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU, PAM AND YOUR FAMILY FROM OURS! WITH MUCH LOVE, MIDGE

Will there be a mandolin player as part of the Unit at the Birchmere 12/26, and if so will it be Jimmy Gaudreau? We are making this a family trip, with our 2 boys (age 12 & 8) who are also big fans, and the 8 year old has enjoyed hearing Jimmy play too.

Tony,
thanks for all the great music and looking forward to the new release. Thanks for new acoustic music contribution! I'm learning some tunes like Birdland Breakdown, Minor Swing, & Devlin and I'm pumped! I love as much as bluegrass except for the difficulty.

AKUS & Tony Rice, on stage together, wow, I sure would like to see that!Unfortunately, flying over to the US for one concert is not an option... Maybe it would be a nice idea to film one of the nights and turn it into a DVD, so we, poor fans in Europe, can also enjoy it?
Happy holidays from the Netherlands!

In 1978 I met Larry and Claire Lynch of the former Front Porch String Band. They were with Rebel back then. Larry introduced me to Tony's astounding style and arrangements, and I played many of Tony's signature (then) songs, like "Freeborn Man" touring with a sideman. I've played since I was 8 and I never put down my guitar, but had to take a job in the town, from 1986 on, to keep the home place. Larry has gone on to explore Celtic music and Claire is now a rising star after their hiatus to raise a family. I've followed Tony's work since then and have just about every recording. Just a word of thanks to you Tony, for all of your fine work and creations. Rehearsing and composing now to come back to my first love, some 20 years and 35 guitars later. Your work is timeless, and I hope our paths will cross.

David, D`Aquisto bought out Tom Vinci...the string winder was the same one the Vinci family developed. I thought you could order Tony Rice D`Aquisto strings here, but I couldnt find them....I will check on a source of purchase for you...........Tony`s answer on the natural pick has always been "I stick with what works".......He sends his Warmest Regards to you all, and appreciates your kind posts and questions.

Tony, what string brand do you play and/or recommend? (My Dad played Black Diamond on his '55 triple ought 18). I'm not inquiring about gauge, I'm asking about quality, it used to be Vinci, is it still now D'Aquisto or some other brand? I'm not looking for an endorsement, just a suggestion for my own playing. Also, wondering if you have tried the fabricated tourtise shell picks, I know you're a stickler for the real thing, tourtise shell picks from Tor Tis, it's the same thing only different. Happy Holidays, thanks for all the tunes, we love you!

Hello, Tony Rice. I have never been so impressed by any other guitarist (and so aware of how much there is to learn).
Someday I may understand how you do it, but that´s not really important. I´ll still have the joy of listening to you (and your musicians). Regards from Sweden (you know that little, cold land in the north of europe), hopefully you´ll come to europe someday. If so, I´ll be there.

I like Tony, but Roy Clark has the Big Note Songbook where you can tape little stickie notes on the fingerboard and learn songs. I like that fast, Roy Clark style, all fast and sloppy, thin picks and fuzzy notes, real jazzy and flashy with Buck Owens. Did Tony RIce appear on Hee - Haw one time - I think he did. I just wish he would play real fast and flashy and Hee-Haw style.

I have been a huge fan since picking up a copy of 'Me And My Guitar' about 15 years ago. Finally got to see Tony & The Unit this past Friday at The Stone Church in New Market, NH. My wife and I had made the 5 hour drive from New Brunswick, Canada to Portland, ME to see Bob Dylan and found out through Pollstar that Tony was playing an hour down the road the next night, so we grabbed our tickets and were on our way. Tony's mastery of the Martin was everything I'd imagined and his stage manner revealed that he is a consumate professional and a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. After the big Arena show for Dylan, the intimate setting at The Stone Church for The Tony Rice Unit was refreshing and awe-inspiring! Long live Tony Rice!!! Keep on pickin'!

Hey everyone, I've been a huge Tony Rice fan forever, and I deeply respect the man for what he's done in music throughout his entire life. Please don't find this offensive or intrusive at all, because I don't intend to be. I have a bunch of extra Tshell picks and guard blanks that I'm trying to sell off from my personal collection. They are all fantastic. If you're interested e-mail me for pricing and further details! My email is acousticgrass @ hotmail.com. I have rounded triangles, standard teardrops, pointed teardrops, 1.5"x1.5" squares, and two shapes of pickguard blanks for dreadnaught and concert jumbo guitars! If Tony Rice reads this and is interested, feel free to hit me up man! I love you!

Howdy all! Just passing through, and I saw the burning question about the biography. I am very happy to report that my co-writer and I are making great strides! My transcriptions of my interviews with both Tony and his mother, the amazing Louise, are complete. Aunt Lou's transcript has 33,000 words, and Tony's, collected in 2003 and 2005, has over 90,000 words! Tim (Stafford, my wonderful co-writer from Blue Highway) is presently working on the transcript of his own conversations with Tony. Add to THAT all of our interviews with Tony's friends and peers in the music community, plus assorted family members... those interviews are roughly 60% completed... We are plugging away at this project, now hoping to have a draft to share with Tony by late April. Just in time for MerleFest! (Miss Pamela dahlin', maybe I'll see ya there!) To say that Tim and I are grateful for everybody's interest in this project is a serious understatement. This book already has an audience; all it needs is to be written! Warm aloha to all of you; please wish us luck and strong backs (and in my case, tough shoulders). We're getting close! Yeeehaaa!

I first heard Tony Rice play with The New South in Lexington KY back in 1965 and I fell in love. It was a small local bar and I was able to get right up under his feet at the edge of the stage and stare mesmerized for hours, watching his fingers fly over the strings. It's been many years since I've heard him play live and I'd never be able to get that close to greatness again but it was a wonderful experience. It's been very gratifying to have been witness to the birth of a legend.

I have been a lifelong fan of Tony's and have spent countless hours listening to his music, the enjoyment I have gotten from that is hard to put in words, thanks is not enough! His choice of songs and music have always been superb! I was fortunate enough to see the shows this past weekend in Salem, VA all I can say is WOW! It sure felt good to see him perform again! It had been many years since I had seen him in concert. Everyone knows his musical talents are unsurpassed but I would also like to mention his utmmost professionalism on stage. I look forward to the show in Carrboro next month, see you there!!

Dear Tony Rice,
I fell in love with the guitar as a young child and had a few guitar "heros", but they all pale in the light of your musical influence. I'm sure you have the same impact on me as Clarence White had on you - I only wish I could acquire YOUR guitar like you did his! I am now 30, and though each must develope his/her own style, I can certainly say that mine has been profoundly affected by yours! I'm mesmerized as I sit and listen to your musical compositions. I only wish I could be inside your head as your fingers fly across the fretboard!!! God has truly blessed you with a wonderful talent. What a treat it was to hear you and Peter at Tall Stacks last week. Ricky and Ralph put on a fine show, but your quartet was definitely the highlight for me. Best wishes.

Tony,
Hello! My name is Mike Navarre and I had the honored privilege to meet you and Peter Rowan backstage Saturday night at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta.(I was with Allen Tolbert - Birmingham, AL). Although we did not have much time to talk, I appreciated the time both of you spent with us....not to mention the "Mind-Blowing" show we were treated to beforehand.
Also, My 17 yearold son Nathan "Lefty" Navarre has been playing guitar since he was 13. He plays everyday and he aspires to be the next "Tony Rice".
He is really looking forward to seeing you in person. We had hoped that you might have been able to make it to this years IBMA's and World Of Bluegrass...That truly would have made the trip.
I hope that you can do a show or festival in Northeast KY around Grayson, KY(Carter County)soon.
"God Bless"
