GUEST BOOK ARCHIVE JANUARY - MARCH 2007
These are the guestbook entries for January - March 2007.
Did Mr. Rice's injury come by falling off his horse? Please somebody tell me so all of us left handers can get an answer. I love it when Tony comes in there sideways on a solo, it makes my heart skip two beats.

Been a long road,Tony. Some bumps but,in the main, smooth riding.Ever since Clarence was taken away from us by a drunk, you have filled his shoes and then some.I've read the guest book.Everyone says you are the greatest flatpicker in the world. They got that dead bang on.When you chose to play and sing pure bluegrass(ie..Molly and Tenbrooks..1981)There is no one on the planet better.Keep on truckin' bud. You're making a lot of people all over the world very happy..be well..Skip

My Review of the Japanese mini LP CD of The Tony Rice Unit "Mar West" Available through Amazon.com
The New Rolling Stone Record Guide Gave it Five Stars
Yes, that pantheon of great musical taste (wink wink) gave this album 5 stars in a review from 1981, as it well should. "Mar West" is one of a quartet of great instrumental jazz recordings that Tony Rice made in the late 70's and early 80's and it's now finally available in its entirety on this Japanese import. All the songs on this album, sans "Mar East", are available on the Rounder Records compilation titled "Devlin". The sound of this import is noticeably better than Rounders compilation with a much greater spaciousness and acoustic timbre. This album marks a real milestone in Tony Rice's long and illustrious career both as guitar player and composer. 7 of the 8 songs are original Rice compositions with the only non-Rice song having been written by Miles Davis.
This is essentially a "blowing" album with plenty of room given to the sidemen to solo and it demonstrates Rices's ability to pick the best musicians to help implement his musical vision. The supporting musicians are Richard Greene on violin, Sam Bush on Mandolin and Todd Phillips on Stand-up Bass. Floridian Mike Marshall also plays mandolin on two cuts without Sam Bush. This is essentially a quartet recording. The heads to the tunes are all very memorable (like all Rice compositions) and Tony sounds confident, positive, and absolutely riveting. Never one to showboat for showboatings sake, Mr. Rice rips your head off at 1:14 on "Is That So", and then almost brings a tear to the eye with the lovely and lillting "Whoa Baby, Every Day I Wake Up With the Blues". Rice's solo on the title song gives aspiring flatpickers a lesson in fast tremelo picking that would surely make Al DiMeola listen twice. In my, and many other peoples opinions, Tony Rice is the greatest and most influential guitar player bluegrass has ever produced. Not limited by the regular bluegrass form in any way, Tony Rice's guitar playing simply transcends catagorization. He is a virtuoso player seething with unparalleled feeling and emotion, and is also a superb interpreter of other peoples's material both instrumentally and vocally. Mr.Rice is an American treasure and deserves to be heard by everyone. If success was measured by actual talent in this country, Tony Rice would be one of the wealthiest musicians in any genre of music. Buy "Mar West", or any other recording by this phenomenal artist, and find out why.

I heard the bad news about your back injury tonight from a friend of mine who plays for Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys. I sure hope you are okay soon. I cannot imagine Peter Rowan going on without you right now. Nobody can fill your shoes!!!! Thanks for another outstanding CD, "Quartet." Please get well soon and I hope they do not have to do surgery. My wife has had four back surgeries and she has never been the same since.

I am very disappointed that for the second time in a year, I have purchased tickets to see Tony Rice and Peter Rowan at the Sellersville Theater, only to see Rice pull out of the show. I understand that things happen, however the right thing to do would be postpone the show to a later date...not force ticket buyers to go to a show without Rice. The theater gave me credit for another show, but I will never buy tickets to a Tony Rice concert again. Postpone shows and let us see what we paid for...don't substitute.

I've been listening to the new Tony Rice & Peter Rowan Quartet album for the last few days. It amazes me that so much music can come from a quartet of instruments and a trio of voices.
Just when I think I've heard it all, Tony, once again, proves me wrong. I honestly don't believe there will be another that can come close to the tonal and dynamic ranges that Tony displays with his playing.
I listen to, and love, all music. The acoustic side of it all has captured me most of all. Doc Watson, Clarence White, Bryan Sutton, Tim Stafford, Charles Sawtelle to name a few. No one can rival Tony's technique.
When It's all said and done, Tony Rice will rank right there with Chet, Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Scottie Moore.......etc
God's Speed Tony,
Keep up the good work
