GUEST BOOK ARCHIVE APRIL - JUNE 2006
These are the guestbook entries for April - June 2007.
Mr. Rice, saw you and Pete in Albuquerque in '06. I've listened to you all my life and even performed one of your songs. Absolutely mesmerizing! Bought and re-bout all your albums over the years. But as I waited for you to come out to get your autograph on your Manzanita CD (my favorite) you said you were "double parked" and totally blew me off. I was crushed. One of the few musicians I'd ever want an autograph from, as your songs helped me to form my music style over the years. I've signed autographs myself from perfomeances with my band, and to me it was always a pleasure and honor...Maybe I wasn't cute enough!

I saw Tony at Grandview Pier in March 1989. When playing, "Me and My Guiitar," Tony broke the B string. As a result the song went on for almost 23 minutes while he changed strings. I was absolutely blown away! That concert is one of the best I have ever seen! Now, "Me and My Guitar," is always in my CD player as are so many of his other CDs.
All the best, Tony.

Tony, you have been and continue to be such an inspiration. The first time i heard your music was in 1984 at a festival. You weren't there but they were playing Cold On The Shoulder cuts between acts. Blew me away! Had to ask the guy next to me who that was. Well, since that day I have everything you've recorded which is quite a catalog. Thanks for the many years of great recordings, and of courseall the live shows. Looking forward to seeing you with AKUS at Telluride.

I think you are the greatist flatpicker that ever walked this planet. You have been an influence to me ever since I heard you. I missed your last show at Sellersville due to the bad weather we had that day.Do you think you will be playing at Sellersville again soon because the last time I saw you perform was one of the highlights of many years of attending your shows.

Tony,
Thanks for taking time to talk with me back in 1998. You gave me great insight about the tuning techniques of Carl Kress and Lonnie Johnson. We also talked about Nick Lucas and Eddie Lang and I was surprised you knew so much about those guys. I admire your approach to guitar.

Great show in Atlanta. I have seen you a few times and what has impressed me the most besides your playing is that you dress very professionally. To me this shows respect to the people that pay to come see you play. I also was at Larry's benefit in Tallahassee and had a chance to visit with him. Another class person. I know you miss him.We do too. Keep up good job

Tony - I have been a huge fan of yours for years. A friend from Canada who plays mandolin (and is a friend of Emory Lester), turned me on to your music 10 years ago. I love all your work, but I'm especially fond of your Gordon Lightfoot album. I just returned yesterday from your concert in Washington DC with AKUS & Jerry Douglas, and can't begin to tell you what a treat it was to finally see you play. Everyone thought I was nuts to travel to DC "just for a concert", but it was the thrill of my life. The only thing that could have topped that would have been meeting you in person. You have inspired so many people in your life, and all I can say is, don't ever stop playing!
You're the greatest!!

Hey Tony, Had great seats to your show with AKUS last night in Atlanta. What a wonderful time! Highlights for me were, Summertime, Freeborn Man, Streets of London, Manzanita, and Church Street Blues. (Thanks for the nice nod to Ga. native, Norman Blake.) My only complaint, if you can call it that, was that you didn't take enough solo breaks during the songs. (Ditch the banjo player and take his breaks...Just kidding Ron!) Hope you and Rowan can make it back to town this year. Take care.
Doug
PS. Can I have that old, beat-up guitar of yours when you get tired of it?? (Haw! Haw!)

I'm sitting in my kitchen listening to "TR Plays and Sings Bluegrass" and trying to figure out all the mandolin parts. I started listening to Tony back in the 70s when a bunch of hippies decided we wanted to play bluegrass. (I played bass at the time -- I only picked up the mandolin lately.) We weren't good enough to steal any of his chops, but it sure inspired us to try!
Thirty-some years later, I'm a college professor but still enjoy Tony's music (and still a hippie in a lot of ways!). I see he's playing in Colorado later this summer -- might be worth a pilgrimage.
Thanks to Tony and all his colleagues for the great music over the years...

I attended the fine concert at the Tennessee Theatre May 15 and was left pretty much lost for words fit for description for the overwhelmiming virtuosity and spontaneous flow I felt in that fine setting; and I was'nt even in the good seats. (No seat is really bad at the Tennessee). I have enjoyed listening throughout a fine and defining era of Bluegrass and dabble at guitar and fiddle myself. (I tried to ask Allison if she gave lessons just before the encore but she did'nt say. Play on Tony, you carry a well-worn torch and set a light for future guitarists to follow the path of a great artist and craftsman.

Tony: We had our whole family crowd to see you in DC Wed eve, it was an awesome night all-around for us all. My wife Carla and I had been to see your opening show in Chattanooga, and appreciated that the DC show had a different selection and order to your music. All our kids are fans although a couple have not been with us to see you perform with the "Unit" and do your instrumental/jazzgrass repertoir - they want to know when you might be out playing with the "Unit" again. I thought you might get a chuckle to find out that even though you thought when you did "Church Street Blues" and "Streets of London" they were duets with Dan and Alison, in fact you had a third person singing harmony in the person of our 8 year old who loves those tunes. He sat on my knee belting out the lyrics right there with you. Thankfully none of our audience neighbors seemed to mind his accompanyment (he was relatively in tune)! Thanks again to you and all the Union Station members for making this a very memorable spring for my whole family!

Saw you at Merlefest this Spring. You continue to be the major influence in my flatpicking education. I hope all is well with you. There was magic in the air at Merlefest. I watched a falling star race across the sky during your set. You are truly blessed with a gift from God and you touch many people with your music. Just wanted you to know that I am one of many that hope to see you play and again. Keep using your talent to make a difference in the world.

Mwife and I were at your performance last night, May 14, at the Tennessee Theater. It was great. Thaks to you and Alison and Union Station for the wonderful experince.
I am from Crystal River. I knew Larry well. I worked with him at Florida Power as well as with Mark Johnson. I lived just down the street from him. Your niece, Pam, was my babysitter for a number of years when she was in her early teens.
I just learned of his death this past Decemcer after ordering tickets for this performace. I was and am still saddened by his passing. My condolences to you and his family. The world lost a wonderful person and artist.

A huge AKUS fan, I anxiously anticipated the concert in Cary last Saturday night. I had not thought of the connection to Tony Rice before the tour was advertised. Would the music be as good without the songs I had grown to love from Alison and the guys? The rain damped my enthusiasm as I drove to the event, but as the musicians came on stage and the misty rain stopped, my heart began to sing along with AKUS and Tony's music! What a wonderful two hours! I never moved from my seat except for the standing ovations! The wonderful guitar picking still is in my head. Thank you for coming to NC Tony, for an evening I will never forget. I am now an even bigger Tony Rice and AKUS fan than ever before! Debra Stowe

Tony, My wife and I REALLY enjoyed seeing you with Allison Krauss and Union Station at Merle Fest. I don't know if anyone has told you this: While you and Jerry were doing the instrumental duet that morphed into "Summertime", a shooting star flew across the sky just above the tree line behind the Waston Stage....I have never seen a shotting star so low and so brilliant. What a magical moment in time. Thanks for the inspiration. Thank You for the Music.

TONY,
I have just heard the most unbeleivable album ever! JD and the New South live in Japan Aug 30th 1975. That was the most awesome Freeborn version ever, among all the other awesome songs on that album. I am looking forward to the Atlanta show on the 19th w/ A. Krauss and Union Station, from what I have read and heard it will probably be the best show I've ever seen. You are an inspiration! God Bless!

Thanks, Tony, for being in Bartlett, Tennessee Saturday night, 5/5/07. From the front row I soaked up the Quartet's stunning displays of musicianship like dry ground drinks in the rain. I always like your innovative stuff, but I like the traditionals too. Your's & Sharon's "Salt Creek" was just a knockout. It was one of my most memorable concerts, along with the time you came out as a surprise one night in the mid-80s at the Birchmere, and played with the Seldom Scene for most of the night.

HI TONY,
IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE BEST MUSIC IN THE WHOLE WORLD. FOR MANY YEARS, I TRIED TO KEEP UP WITH YA AND ATTENDED EVERY LOCAL SHOW WHEN YOU WERE IN TOWN. HOWEVER, SINCE THE DEATH OF MY FATHER AND A MASSIVE HEARTATTACK SUFFERED BY MY HUSBAND I HAVE NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE INVOLVED WITH MUSIC FOR AWHILE. I HAD TO SELL ALL OF MY MUSICIAL INSTRUMENTS JUST TO SURVIVE AND PROVIDE FOR MY KIDS. I MUST TELL YOU OF ALL THE INSTRUMENTS I HAD TO SELL THE ONE MOST THAT HURT THE MOST (I WAS CRYING AS I WAS SELLING) WAS MY TONY RICE GUITAR. IT WAS BOUGHT FOR MY BY MY FATHER BEFORE HE DIED AND WAS THE BEST GUITAR I HAVE EVER OWNED.I WAS VERY PROUD AND STILL PROUD TO HAVE OWNED ONE!!! BUT IN MY HEART I KNEW I WAS DOING THE RIGHT THING AND WHAT I HAD TO DO. I HAVE LEARNED THEY WERE JUST MATERIAL THINGS AND ONE DAY COULD BE REPLACED. I LOOK FORWARD TO VISITING THE FOX IN MAY TO SEE YA IN CONCERT. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE MUSIC REALM AGAIN!! I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YA. YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED MUSICIANS I HAVE EVERY KNOWN AND APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO. THANK YOU FOR BEING SUCH AN INSPIRATION TO ME AND MY FAMILY.

The Chattanooga concert was a great music experience, the range of songs just drove home the depth and breadth of Tony's virtuosity. My wife and I just sat there enthralled through it all in wonder. I have to point out our appreciation for a subtle bit of humor: we have heard Tony call "Manzanita" the song banjo players love to hate, so hearing it performed including the nice banjo solo by Ron Block made us chuckle. We are really looking forward to seeing the show again in DC (yup, much closer to home!) but this time we will have our whole brood, young to old, along. We have raised a whole new generation of Tony Rice fans who listen to it all, from spacegrass to ballads to pure bluegrass. Thanks so much, tony, for sharing your music and making it a family favorite!

I thought I would add to my last post by mentioning that Ronnie Bowman was in the crowd last night he was on the floor about 10 rows back. That was also very cool. I think my two favorite songs were Dan singing Church Street and Alsion singing Streets of London. but of course Freeborn Man and Manzanita was great too!!!
Thanks again for a great night and please put out a cd or dvd from this tour FWS

The Chat. Show was awesome. Some of the highlights were Tony ad Jerry doing Summertime. Tony started it out on stage by himself with a long improvised solo and then Jerry stepped out and did his thing and then they just melted together. The crowd loved it. They did manzannita, ginsing sullivan, down the road, church street blues, streets of london, song for a winter nigh, and several more but I need to finish waking up to remember. One highlight that needs mentioning was freeborn man. We carried a rock guitarist with us that had never heard TonY before. When Tony took a break HE SMOKED IT!!!!!!!!!! The guy with us turned around with his jaw dropped. It was priceless! Best review I can give right this second.Roy

Tony's the greatest. I hope the Tony Biography that is supposed to be being put together really does come to be. It would be the most anticipated and most looked forward to work I could ever hope for.

Tony.
I wonder if you actually read your fan mail? I haven't found any replys from you on your website...am I looking in the wrong places?

Hello Mr. Rice:
I 'm a bluegrass lover and YOU 'RE the BEST ! Since I 'm Canadian, I really appreciated your album of Gordon Lightfoot songs. Well done ! Bravo !
I can 't get music stores here to order your 'Out of the Woodwork' CD. I believe your best 'single' is embedded in that album ... "Somewhere on the Road Tonight". In fact I 'm playing it on repeat , as I type ! I can 't get enough of it ! !
'Church Street Blues' has always been another favourite of mine, eh ! I also have this song of yours on a Bluegrass Pickin' Instruction video. (Norman Blake, Happy Traum, Nick Forster, Russ Barenburg, Steve Kaufman, Dan Crary, and, naturally, YOU are in it.) It 's entitled 'GREAT GUITAR LESSONS (Bluegrass Flatpicking). The year on it is 1995.
I 'm a 60 yr. old male and I 've loved bluegrass ever since I first heard it ... that was 35 years ago. I enjoy playing guitar, drums and singing.
I used to go to a lot of festivals in Ohio ... mostly Greenwich (they always invited Ralph Stanley). Unfortunately, for Ralph, I always enjoyed the "jamming" in the park better ... 'til about 4:00am !
Well, sir, the time now is about 2:00am and I start work at 6:00am building trucks on the production line. So, I have to say, "Goodnight" or, good morning !
Please stay happy, healthy and safe. God Bless You in your future endeavours.
Yours respectfully,
Terry Cowan

I saw the show in Charlotte.N.C. The live concert sound was mixed by Peter Rizzo of N.Y.C. The strings tended to be a bit bright, but the over all sound and live mix were quite excellent.

You are a great inspiration to my family. I wish I could play as good as you do. I've never seen you live in concert but I've got all of your cd's.
Thanks
