I've been a lover of guitar music of every genre forever. I've collected albums and CDs in: "Blues," that range from Mississippi John Hurt to Robin Trower; Country from Scotty Moore to Chet Atkins; Jazz from Charlie Christian to Joe Pass and Chet Atkins; Rock from John Fogerty to Frank Zappa; Bluegrass from Lester Flatt to Dan Crary and Chet Atkins. Mechanically, Chet is in a league of his own, and I'm blown away by his dexterity and range. He's my second favorite player. To me, B.B. King stands out for clarity of tone, and Norman Blake's hammering takes scales from fret board exercises to exciting solos. Put those elements together. Add signature technique... integrating harmonics at any given point on a run, and something I cannot define. but his playing reels me in as with no musician I've ever heard. Tony Rice. Period. -Steve B. Natick, MA

Hi Mr. Rice, I am a very big fan of your guitar playing. I am 12 yrs. old and I play guitar. My sister is 18 and she plays guitar, too. I have four brothers and they all play. One's gone, one is 14 and he plays the fiddle, one's 13 and he plays the mandolin and dobro, and the last one is 4 and he's learning to play the fiddle(started at age 3) and mandolin. Daddy plays banjo and Mama plays bass. All sing exept 2 of the boys. We LOVE your music and hope someday to meet you. -Abby*

In my slow, steady process of buying and carefully listening to every note Tony has ever recorded, I have been lucky enough to recently obtain a copy of the album Tony Rice Sings and Plays Bluegrass. WOW! What a tremendous album. I am especially loving the guitar solo on Thunderclouds of Love right now. FLux's break on that tune isn't too shabby either . . .Thanks (though a little late) for a truly great album, Mr. Rice!

Usually I only chime in here on Tony's birthday (still waiting on "Swing 52-56"), but I have a question and was wondering if the gracious Mrs. Rice would ask Tony what guitar he used to record Mobius Mambo? And, did he use the same guitar for the lead and rhythm tracks? My guess is he used the Ovation but it's a guess of course. I love that song and have just learned to play it (sort of). Kinda like "Fish Scale" it's a real finger workout. Tony's music is an American Treasure and should be heard by everyone. If financial success was based on "real" talent in this country, Tony Rice would be the richest musician in the USA. Warm regards to the Rice family.

i had the thrill of a lifetime at the minnesota bluegrass festival 2 yrs ag when i was given the opportunity to meet mr. rice backstage. for me it was like meeting the pope. he was the consumate gentleman as he signed my guitar strap, and accepted my babbling compliments. (at 61 yrs old, i felt and sounded like a teenager). he's obviously a very nice person. i've listened to his music for over 30 years and i don't think there's anyone who can touch him. if you think i'm exaggerating, just try playing some of his tunes with the same tone.

Born 15 miles from Tony but 10 years earlier. Spray, N.C. Lost a lot of years somewhere.Probably Viet Nam.Just stay close to home now. Can not go to bed at night without watching Tony do (Back where I started again)with Lawson and Schatz and the other gentlemen. I know you can never roll back the days but sure would like to see them all somewhere together. Don't suppose a simple thanks would be enough but that's all I can do for now. Bill S

I am really interested in reading whatever Tony wrote in May 2007 (I've read about it in some posted comments here). I read what he wrote in 2003 and wonder if it is the same. (?) ALSO: Anyone know where I can find Tony singing "I Just Think I'll Stay Around"? THANKS!

Mr. Coolidge, we apologize to you and other fans that missed seeing Tony. A Chest Xray revealing he was on the verge of pnuemonia, was taken the day before he was scheduled to leave for the first venue. He is slowly improving. Again our apology, Pamela

Dear Tony, I've been a fan of yours for a long time. I'm 27 years old and I play guitar too. I love your guitar playing. I have a 1995 Martin HD-28 and I enjoy playing it. I bought it from a friend of mine named Steve Standley from Newnan, GA. He told me that he played with you a long time ago in a jam session. I don't know if you remember him or not. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for having such a big influence on all bluegrass guitar players, including myself. I miss your voice as well but I hope that you will be able to sing again someday. I hope to see you at a festival sometime but you don't come to Georgia much. Take care. Brian

Travelled 90 miles one way, $2.79 a gallon..paid $30.00 for a ticket for the evening show,$30.00...didn't see Tony, priceless. ??? Maybe someone should have said he wasn't going to do the show before I paid to get in...dunno. That makes the second time I've tried to see Tony and he didn't show...very dissapointed.

Greetings Tony, I've been listening to your music since '82. The two cds with Peter Rowan are beautiful and I've become a huge fan of Peter's as a result of listening to this music. I recently learned of your brother Larry's passing and I'm deeply saddened by the news. His albums Hurricanes and Daydreams, and Time Machine are dear to my heart. May he rest in peace. Thanks for your beautiful artistry!

Hiya Tony. Hope you check in now and then! Anyway I first heard of you in about 1978 when I bought an album call Dawg Music. Devlin was on it. Have since lost that album due to hostile alien forces. Hope you are doing well, and hope you and John Carlini can get together again sometime. Later!

I first heard Tony's music back in the late 70's, when I was listening to a lot of Bluegrass music as a Teenager. I used to set and listen to Church street Blues for hours. I believe Tony is definatley one of the greatest Acoustic guitarists of all times.

Tony...Please come to Milwaukee, WI someday to play. We have a lot of bluegrass lovers up here. Some great jazz and new age lovers here, too. Various artists from the Narada cd's have recorded here. (Including David Grisman & Emory Lester.) I loved seeing you in Washington DC, and would love it even more if you did a show at our Milwaukee Theater.

Uh! Hey man! It's been so long since I have even seen you out anywhere. Thought I'd sign your guest book just to say hey and wish you well. I was one of the cats that carried your guitar up the steps of the motel you stayed at while in Lexington, Va.. Your arm or wrist was broken at the time so you needed someone to grab your guitar. I volunteered. Anyway, I've known and picked a bunch with your brother and Pete Ross. Anyway, hope your doing well and God bless ya man! See ya round now! Buddy Wolfe

Tony - What can I say, man? Its been since last spring at the Birchmere that I saw you play live. I never realized just how spoiled I was, living in the DC area and having so many great bluegrass artists come through regularly. I finally put some TRU discs in my car, and they made the ride to work this morning SO much more enjoyable. Here's to more wonderful music and the hope that I get to see you play live real soon. Keep pickin'!

Tony, I have been a fan for a long time. I finally was able to see you live in Knoxville on May 14. What a great show. Not only are you my favorite guitar player you are also my all-time favorite bluegrass singer. I dont know whose idea it was for you to have Alison and Dan sing your songs but it was absolutely a brilliant idea. Will there be more TRAKUS collaborations? I sure hope so. What a thrill to finally get to see you work your magic in person. Thanks for all the great music.

Looking forward to seeing you and Peter at Friendship Park in Milton, PA on 7/22. Have listened to you over the years, but this will be the first time to see you in person. I don't know if you are staying the night after the show, but I am the "Coffee Chauffeur" for Mahoganyroasters.com and JP (a roaster) serves up a good cup of Jo at our campsite in the mornings - to find us ask the festival attendants, they come for the coffee in the mornings and shoot we'd brew up fresh pot after ya'lls show, if you'd like. JP is also bringing 'Sylvia' the expresso maker, if you need an extra kick. Looking forward to an enjoyable week-end and if you, Peter and the band stop by for coffee it'll be nice to meet you. Keep On Pickin', Miles PS - All coffee is on the house for everyone; its a great way to meet new and old friends, along with getting the day started. Remember, "The world needs GOOD coffee."
