I am coming from just outside Calgary Alberta Canada to Knoxville TN to see you play in early January. You have been a musical inspiration to me since I first heard your music at the age of 18. I am now 34, and this cross country pilgramage will attest to the draw you have on music lovers all over the world.

Mr. Rice, Being raised in the mountains of Virginia and learning to play guitar at an eary age, I was introduced to your style of playing in my late teens. Red Haired Boy was the first song I learned of you as best as I could. That was over 20 years ago and most of the songs I used to play in bars and dances are hard to remember, but whenever I pick up a guitar anymore, your songs are a go to that can never forget. Tonight I picked up the ole guitar for my daughter and played Red Haired Boy. She was amazed that I could play it. I wanted her to hear the real thing, so we ran a search on you and found some youtube videos. I'm so glad that I could share with her what I learned from you. God bless and thank you.

Just read your letter to veterans. Thanks. It means a lot to us. For my family military service (was and) is an obligation and responsibility that we owe to our country. Looking forward to your show in April of 09 at Jorma's ranch where I'll be a student of his. Would love to pick with you then. I'm sure I'll learn something.

Tony, Thanks for the great message on Veterans. My dad is a 100% disabled Vietnam Vet who suffers from PTSD. He LOVES Tony Rice and bluegrass. I buy him records all the time for him to listen to. My dad worked on a farm and volunteered at 18 to go to Vietnam (1st Cav). He's now 61 and I manage his finances as well as helping out with medications and well being. It's my duty to take care of him as a son but I also do it for the sacrifice he's made for all of us. I got the opportunity to take him to the Wall last fall and it was very emotional for both of us. I don't think he actually looked at it even once. He just walked close by with his head down. I'd just like to personally thank you for your gratitude toward veterans of our great land. They need our prayers, support, and help each day. I can prove it. I pray a lot for the veterans that don't have families to care for them. You wouldn't believe how many of these people don't have anyone to love or care for them. I'd also like to thank you for your music.Dad can't get out and go to concerts b/c he doesn't deal with crowds but he LOVES the music. I've brought several folks over to his house to play for him over the years and he enjoys that. He loves his music collection and I'd imagine it's about the best therapy he gets. Take care and see you at Danny's wedding if not sooner. I bet Mona won't let him work on cars in the kitchen... Scott

Tony and Pam - Thank you so much for your kind words on the passing of our dear friend, Michael Powel. Your message would have pleased him immensely as he was one of your greatest fans.

Also, Thank You so much for the tribute to the veterans of this great land of ours. Our 19 year old nephew Raleigh has just deployed to Iraq for his first tour of duty. God Bless all our men and women in uniform, both past and present.

Letter Of thanks To Veterans Everywhere from Tony Rice

I want to take a moment and try to express my heart felt gratitude to the veterans of this great land..

I know that it is not possible for me to email, or call you up individually to thank each and every one of you,..

And so, I hope that this letter will in some small way service, to let you outstanding men and women know, my family and I, are in your debt.

We cannot even to begin to imagine the sacrifice and suffering you people have gone threw for us.

Often being thousands, of miles away from your homes and loved ones, on our behalf's.

Being shot at, and often, shot up,...

Providing insurance that we Americans everywhere, have the freedoms we still enjoy today.

I have met so many musicians from communist countries, who risked the odds of death, to come here to the U.S.

To them, possible death by risking escape was a far better alternative, than to be denied the freedoms our veterans insure us.

Other musicians like myself, who felt they had something of value to offer, to the world threw their music..

However unless they could obtain freedom by escaping to come here, they had no vehicle of expression for their music,... it was dead,.. useless.

I have been privileged to sit in total amazement, while listening to their stories of how they escaped. The most amazing from Communist Eastern Europe.

Did you know Bluegrass is banned in certain areas of the world? I surely didn't, until they told me.

You veterans both in the "hear and now" as well as those walking the "spirit world" are amazing heroes to them, as well as to myself.

I again, wish to send my thanks, and love out to you, and your families, especially as this holiday season draws near.

If you are like me you might be having to tighten your belts this year. Our music industry has taken a tremendous hit with music pirating, compounded by this sagging economy.

I know many of you are still far away from home, fighting for your lives at this very moment, or out on ships, or stationed in remote locations, ....

Separated from family, friends and the freedoms we enjoy here at home, at your expense.

Just know my thoughts and prayers are not far from your sides, because I certainly feel compelled, to send my prayers your way.

Not just today, because its veterans day, but daily in my meditations and prayers.

To those who have told me that my music was of comfort to you, or got you threw the rough spots in battle....

I am most in your debt, for offering that tremendous validation of my music.

That is without a doubt the the highest honor any musician can ever achieve.

No music award could possibly ranks higher, for me.

If it were up to me, I would have have this federal government pay each and every one of you no less than one million dollars for your service,

Those who served both past, as well as present

Whenever I walk out on a stage, know that I salute you, for providing me the opportunity to stand there and perform.

With Deep, and Undying Respect, Tony Rice

The first time I heard Tony play was on the Tony Rice Guitar album in 1978.Since then I have been in awe of His Impecable playing. He is defenatly one of the great innovators of guitar styles that ever lived. I have great respect for a person who can make a guitar sound that way. He is also a trend setter.I know everyone knows that, but I just wanted to say it too.Keep on pickin Tony. Til your fingers Bleed!

Mr. Rice, I'm a huge fan of your music. I can't say enough about your fantastic approach to the guitar. Your phrasing, tone and choice of notes are totally unique so indentifiable. What a gift! Thank you so much for your contribution to acoustic music. I hope that one day soon you'll come to Wichita. We have a beautiful venue, (The Orpheum Theater) that has been recently renovated to the early twenties time period and I'd love to see you play there...We've had some greats come to this theater, you'd be in good company. What more could I say about you that hasn't already been said? I wish you good health and a long life! May God bless you and your family... Yours with Admiration, Andy Fay

Dear Mr. Rice, My name is Brad and I live in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. I'm 19 years old and I just recently discovered you and your music. I have been playing the guitar going on 6 years now and, over these past couple of months, have started playing coffee shops and places like that. For awhile I was almost strictly an electric guitar player, that is, until I heard your Manzanita album. What you and that album have taught me is that I don't need an amplifier and heavy amounts of distortion to express myself on the guitar, just a flatpick and my own personal touch. I guess what I really want to say to you Mr. Rice is thank you for being such a great inspiration and such a phenomenal guitarist. I have fallen in love with bluegrass guitar as well as the music form itself. Unfortunately, there's not much in Bridgeville or Pittsburgh in the way of good bluegrass music. Maybe someday soon you'll find your way back here for a show! God bless you Mr. Rice

Dear Mr. Rice, I discovered your music in a roundabout sort of way. I am a music lover, with a collection of 2000 cds and 500 lps (mostly jazz, rock and classical). About 18 months ago, a local Old Time two-man band, "Sheesham and Lotus," started playing in the town square on market days. My one year-old son became fascinated with them, particularly the banjo player. He demanded to hear banjo music! So I went out to used record stores and bought classic bluegrass: Reno and Smiley, Flatt and scruggs, and so on. Then one day we were shopping for cds and my son noticed Bela Fleck's Bluegrass Sessions vol. 2, on display. I bought it. What an album! I was mesmerized by your guitar picking, especially on track 4. I now own seven of your cds. As I write this, I am in a sort of magical state of mind, listening to your virtuoso performance of "Shenandoah" from "Unit of Measure." The only other version of that traditional classic that is so moving to me is Keith Jarett's solo rendition on "The Melody at Night with You." Like Jarett, you are a master, a maestro, a virtuoso. You make that old, prized guitar of yours sing. When I hear it, I feel kind of like "Moritz," Samuel L. Jackson's character in the great film, "The Red Violin." Words cannot describe the beauty of your music. It will live on for decades and decades to come. For your information have only written one other 'fan mail letter' to a musician. That was to Herbie Hancock. I hope to see you in concert one day. Hopefully you'll come to Canada soon! Best wishes, T.S.

Yo Tony, I heard you were out there on the edge of societal creation with your axe. Great! I remember watching and listening to you and Larry at Rainbo Lakes Estates Big Bonable Lake House in 1965 along with Johnny McCampbell and Ricky Frazier. You weren't good then, you were excellent, and Larry was a wizard on the Mandolin. I had wondered what happened to you and Larry, but I also wondered what happened to Johnny Mac and Rick Frazier???? Got most of your CD's and every one of them are superb. Thanks for the memories, especially those evenings at the "Blue Run" when you were perfecting what you do today. Shalom, Aaron David Hrachovic

Today we are absolutely heartbroken at the passing Sunday of our dear beloved friend Michael Powel - who introduced us to Vassar back in 1994 or so, who then introduced us to Tony, which then led to the creation of this website.

Michael, AKA Dawgbite, played electric guitar like Jerry Garcia and mandolin like David Grisman in many musical incarnations in the Tampa / St. Pete area of Florida during the 80's and 90's. He was very loved and will be missed much more than words can tell.

We love you Michael, our best friend in the whole world.

Tony- I'm a 30 year fan that you never have ceased to amaze. I have to respect our mutual admiration of Jerry Reed. You and he are my musical heroes. I recently heard a interview of him where he jokingly said that God screwed up when He made Reed. "He was supposed to give me Elvis' looks and Chet's hands!" What a line!

Gosh, where do I begin? I first of all want to say I love Tony's music. Last Tuesday evening I layed down my Collings Clarence White guitar as I was listening to Mar West. I was changing Cd's in my player, and when I stepped over, I stepped right through the top of the guitar. I have a size 14 foot, and that covers the whole bridge area. Pretty upset now. There is no way to fix this because the back is busted too. I just threw it all away, but I saved the neck and tuners.
