Mr. Rice Sir:
At the lowest point in my young life, God introduced me to your music. Thanks for being a faithful servant of your intuition and thank you for being my hero!

Tony, What an inspiration you've been to us guitar nuts!! I'd been a rock guitarist from the 60's and got turned on to you by a bluegrass friend. We were helping w/stage setup @ Festival in Cowtown, NJ. Backstage during concert, you broke the E string on "the Bone", which I offered to help change for you. You said " I got it" and we're back on stage within 3 minutes! I almost had my hands on that "sweet thang." HaHa . God bles you man, you ARE the Best!!!

I first saw you at Grandview Pier in Hampton VA in March of 1989. I was blown away, especially when you broke a string during Me and My Guitar which then ran to about 23 minutes. I can't say enough how your music influenced me and how I love it. Now, if we could only get you to the Seattle area once in a while. All the best. You are most awesome!

Dear Tony,
I have all or almost all of your music on cd and love all of it. My heart aches for you loss of singing ability from dysphonia. I was reading an old Reader's Digest story about the Dilbert cartoon creator, I think his name is Scott Adams. He also had dysphonia but was able to overcome it. You probably know all about his story. I am sorry that I do not have the Reader's Digest copy with me right now or elso I would tell you which one it is. I have it in my car though. How can I get the article to you? Maybe you've already seen it.

Heartfelt greetings to you Tony!
My first exposure to your wonderful talent was while watching the DVD filmed at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival titled: Bluegrass Journey. You played Shenandoah. I've never heard music as beautiful.
Thank you for traveling the country and playing your guitar for us.
I live in central New York (farm land and wine country) and would welcome your visit to Ithaca. We have a large down-to-earth community who would appreciate you playing at the State Theater. Please contact Doug Levine(607) 277-8283 ext. 800.
John Prine, Lyle Lovett, and John Hiatt sold out the theater. You'll have absolutely no problem either.
I am very sorry to hear of your dysphonia disorder. Thank you for continuing to play guitar despite that setback.
I am ordering all of your DVD tutorials because I want to support you and to learn as much as possible from such a phenomenal musician.
I would love the opportunity to meet you in this lifetime.
A friend you haven't met yet,

You are simply one of the greatest guitar players of all time! I first saw you live with Peter, Sharon, and Bryn at Merlefest in 06' and your solo on Midnight Moonlight absolutely spoke to me! I was dazzled once again when you and the quartet came to the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago in 07'. Please come back to Chicago sometime...you are phenomenal!

HI, Several years ago I took lessons from Mr. Clarence Greene. What a great teacher! The year you played at the Bluegrass Festival in Lenoir, NC( probably 1994-96 somewhere in there) Clarence gave me a backstage pass so I could meet you! I was so nervous to meet such a wonderful musician that I couldn't get up the courage to knock on the door to the room where you were before the concert. Lord, how I have kicked myself for that through the years! I hope to see you perform when you come to Morganton, NC in July! I dare not put my email address on here but I would still love to meet you if it is ever possible! C. Cook

Thanks Tony for all the years of great music. I grew up hearing Bluegrass but didn't much care for it until I saw you at the benefit for The Nashville Bluegrass Band, a night that changed my life. Again thanks for being the talent you are and I wish for you many many more happy years.

Tony, looking forward to the sevierville festival this year. My late husband, Shannon Patterson, picked with you years ago in Nashville at SPBGMA and at the downhome in Johnson City. We were big fans. Shannon passed on when our son, Hunter was only 2 years old. Although he never saw his father play, the boy can smoke some strings at age ten and he's a big fan. He continues to play bluegrass (rice style)with his cousin, Jed Patterson, and my uncle (his teacher), Igeary Pearcy. We hope that if we make it down there, you could possibly sign his martin--keep pickin!

With your music playing (the whole deal, pickin, singin , songs, arrangements etc) my darlin and I fell in love with each other and have been married 25 years in June 2010. So thank you for our wonderful start. I was wondering if you still have the Black and White pic of your old guitar headstock, pick, and the cobwebs are on the tuners.... after you played a whole set on Grandfather Mountain a long time ago ??? That pic was the best on I ever took. Wyatt told me once you kept it on the "stereo".. I was just wondering. Patty Brookbank pattyjocline@hotmail.com

We just saw the Tony Rice Unit at the Forum in Harrisburg. It was one of my all-time favorite live shows, and that's saying a lot. Every musician was superb, and everybody fit together perfectly. I especially noticed how solid the groove was throughout the set. If you record an album with that group of artists, I promise I will buy several (and not just one song for 99 cents!). Thank you -- all of you -- for such a stellar performance. The show was poorly promoted. It was pure luck that we found out about it at all. That's why there weren't more people. There's no doubt that if the show had been promoted properly you would have seen many more faces in the crowd!

My wife and I came to see you and the Unit at Ram's Head on Friday. What a great show. I've seen you many times and get reminded every time that no music compares to the blend of jazz and bluegrass that you have mastered. Opening with a "few of my favorite things" was brilliant. And it's great to hear the true standards as well. Don't hesitate to keep playing great gems like "John Wilkes Booth"! God Bless you Tony and don't be a stranger in Maryland.

On Tuesday, 20 December 2005, Casey Harris signed your guest book and requested that you email her then boyfriend Caleb Tibbitts. She stated that he was your biggest fan. I don't know if you were able to grant her request, but today, with a heavy heart, I am here to tell you that this young man who was so inspired by you and so loved across our county, has passed away at the age of 21 as a result of a horrible auto accident. This young man was humble and sweet and placed all his faith in the Good Lord above. Many of the stylings of beautiful music that Caleb made with his brother and cousins in a group known as Papa's Prayer was influenced by his love of your music. In the Burnt Hickory community of Dallas, GA, today lost not only a wonderful and loving son, brother, cousin, and friend, but an extraordinarily talented musician and singer. Please continue to play and sing and inspire other fine young men such as Caleb Maston Tibbitts...

I would like to Wish four very special people in my life, a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY.
+*First my precious and loving wife, Pamela.
*My younger brother of 14 years Wyatt. Who,in his own right is an extraordinary guitarist.
*My dear freind of many many years, Erle Scruggs, who's contributions to the banjo, and bluegrass music, is for the most part immeasurable. He is also quite the example of a southern gentlemen, I might add.
*And looking up toward the old Qualla Boundry way, our handsome young family friend Zane Fairchild. Who is no slouch himself with a flat pick, I might add.
I hope all four of you are blessed this day and threw out this comming year. Each of you in your own very special way, have been responsible, for blessing my life in countless ways.
So let the celebrations begin. T.R

I want to assure all my fans that I am comming here to read all your message's you leave to me. They are a source of comfort and inspiration, most especially in these days when the economy is having such an effect on musicians everywhere and of every genre.. Unfortunately so many great ones are finding themselves temporally out of work, where live show dates are concerned. It will get better.
So to my family, fans and friends, thank you all for being who you are to me in my life. May the Holy Creater bless us all this 2010.
With Great Respect and Affection, Tony Rice

Dear Tony:
Uh-oh... Another generation afflicted with bluegrass! My three-year-old daughter has heard some of your recordings at home (I've been listening since the days of the David Grisman Quintet), so we explored YouTube, and before you know it, she's asking me for that old Bluegrass All-Star video of you and the usual suspects playing "Freeborn Man" and "Nine-Pound Hammer." Over and over. She's awed by you, and she's in love with Sam Bush. We'd be pleased to see you back in New York sometime soon. Stay well and best wishes from Hope and her daddy.
